....could be awesome!

Maybe a 1/2IM distance.

Possible locations..Cabo San Lucas, St.Tropez......Pasadena, Detroit's

trendy Industrial district has been hot as of late.

Maybe Mr.Dan(No relation to Lieutenant Dan) can package it all up?

Add a Masters Elite-Pro division..would love to see Mark Allen,Dave Scott,G Welch, PN Fraser and company in action one more time..

Count me in for St. Tropez, as long as it's distant from IMC. I suppose off the shoulder race suits would be de rigour?

I don't care where it's at, as long as it's in a warm place. I can't take any of those "wetsuit required to avoid hypothermia" races ;-)

To borrow a Demerlyism..."That would be HUGE!" One of the ultimate "Destination" races...

Any water within spitting distance of Xantusia? Such a race could only be complete if the course passed by Dan's little spot there in the SoCal outback...and I don't think he'll be able to fit 1500 STers in his Endless Pool.

Any water? You mean, is there anywhere there ISN"T water near Xantusia. Holy crap this place is a mess right now. I just tried for 3 hours to get off this blasted mountain, to no avail. San Bernardino mountains become incapacitated when there is weather, sucks, big time.

Anyway, Dan's in one of the best places possible to hold an incredible du or tri. As he has written about, the du is all about geography, and there is tons of it near his abode. Here is how you do it...

Start near Dan's pad and ride to the 138, however it is one might get there. Take the 138 east to Silverwood Lake. T1. Swim a bit, maybe just get your feet wet. T2. Back on the bike and head west on 138, up HWY 2 to where it intersects with HWY 39. Down HWY 39 to the East Fork Bridge. Take that to Glendora Mountain Road. Up GMR to Glendora Ridge Road. Over GRR to Mount Baldy Rd. MBR up to San Antonio Falls Rd. T3. Up SAFR approximately 8 miles to the top of Mt. Baldy. Have your picture taken to prove you were there. Back down SAFR. T4. Backtrack on the bike to the starting point. Huge. Epic. Major major major major (Catch22 style) props and bragging rights to whoever wins that one. All told it'd be about...200 miles and 20,000' of gain on the bike, give or take 20%...16 miles with 4000' of gain on the run...who cares about the swim really?

Re: Annual SlowTwitch Triathlon [Sojourner] [In reply to] Can't Post

you wouldn't ride the #138. you get to silverwood lake from our place by taking big pines hwy over the hill, down to wrightwood, then lone pine canyon road to #138. then you just have 1 mile of #138 traffice (actually less than that) and then across the #15 and up to silverwood.

don't know the distance, but it's just shy of a century from our house to lake gregory and back.

yes, there is water. littlerock reservoir. quite nice open water swimming, it's 15 minutes away from us. it's a 32 mile ride from the house round trip, so it's a ride swim ride or a drive swim drive. or a drive, swim, ride, drive. or a..... well, you know.

we can't hold a BIG triathlon there, just because of parking issues. but we could certainly do a sort of informal half IM. that's easy.

Re: Annual SlowTwitch Triathlon [Slowman] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I didn't know about lone pine canyon road, so I looked it up on mapquest...and APPARENTLY lone pine canyon road hits lytle creek road which connects to mt. baldy road. Do you know anything about this slowman? Can it be true? I could swear I've been to the end of mt. baldy road a hundred times, and the only road out is san antonio falls rd (I thought), which is dirt. Do you know if that goes over the mountain and connects back up with lone pine canyon? This could be a real turning point in my life.

I think I need me a mountain bike.

"Can it be true?"

unfortunately, no. but, if you can get to lytle creek road, it's not that far to #138, if you go up, oh, what is it called, the "old" road that parallels #15 about a third of the way up cajon pass.

no, lone pine canyon rd. is a direct shot from wrightwood to the #15, or very close to it. it hits the #138 about a half-mile from the #15. but it's a BBBIIIIITTTCCCHHH to climb on a bike, tho i haven't done it. i can just tell it. and i don't mean a nice, curvy bitch. i mean a straight line, steep bitch that you can see all the way up.

but, it's a rural, empty bitch, which, as bitches go, makes it almost worthwhile.

Re: Annual SlowTwitch Triathlon [Slowman] [In reply to] Can't Post

How about...by "invitation" only then...

And how would one get an invitation....

Well, first of all, one would have to be in the top 100 posters of the prior year...

And then the capricious intellect of our gracious forum host could select 25 or so of those to invite...(however many the joint will handle)...just to make sure the master wouldn't be obligated to invite some OrangUtan-like jackass that posts a million two-word trolls just to finagle an opportunity to stuff it to STers in person...

Same bat time, same bat channel, same bat course every year...

And of course the finishline would be well stocked with beer...guarded by the Empfield mongrel(s?) while the group was away...

Informal...hash-esque in operation...

Oh, and once you've done it...that's it...you can't come back...once and out...its about the experience...subsequent years invitation slots roll down past the Demerlys out there who run-off-at-the-keyboard year after year.

There will have to be a photo-safe zone since many potential photos of the events could be used against the participants... ;-> or so I gather from rumors about the goings on at Dan's cult... And we don't want the ATF to get their hands on evidence...

Anyway...I think this idea has legs...but I don't own the joint...just sounds cool to me... Nobody else around here has the cache...not even Demerly or Tibbs...to pull off an invitation only event in their neck of the woods...

Oh...and there will have to be one or two crotchety old-timers every year as well...Molina...Scott...PNF...Souza...and eventually Reid, Deboom, etc will get the call...

This idea has a lot of merit, Slowman, in order not to crash everybodies "A" race I propose an early season race on the order of a half but not exactly. Maybe a race in the spirit of SAS. A bike, a run, a swim, a run , a swim, whatever the Topography permits. It would be great to make this an annual TSR fundraiser? What do you all think?

Re: Annual SlowTwitch Triathlon [Slowman] [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, I was intrigued by this "bitch" of a hill, and didn't feel like driving over to Baldy today, so I went to check out Lone Pine Canyon. Wow. That is just an awesome hill. Here is what the bottom looks like, nice scenery.

Then I get up to Wrightwood and am digging the drive, so I keep going to see if I can make it to Big Pine Hwy. Sure enough, it's clear, and after waiting in line with the skiers to get by the sheriff checking for chains/4WD/AWD, I'm crusing down Big Pine Hwy. What an incredible road.

Then I find myself wondering/wandering where the official Big Pine Hwy climb starts, as I want to see what fredly's CR is all about (I think fredly said he had the unofficial climb record around 57' or so, at least amongst ST'ers?) The roads out that way are just gorgeous, nobody on them and in pretty good shape. Seems like that area is made for triathlon, with Lake Gregory about 45ish miles from Xantusia, Silverwood Lake about 35ish miles from Xantusia, Lake Jackson (10 miles away?), and the aqueduct ;) to choose from for swimming, any of the roads are rideable, and certainly there are great trails in the area to run upon.

So where does the Big Pine climb officially start? I imagine it ends when you hit the 2? The unofficial-official record is?

Is this the start below?

I think I was driving right by when you, or maybe it was somebody else, got to Xantusia. The silver truck caught my attention and made me look over and see the official Xantusia sign, so I thought I'd stop and take a picture (as you or whoever in the truck appeared to be picking up some mail or somthing? ooooh spooky) just to see what it feels like to be an internet stalker ;) The place is pretty barren, with potential parking as far as the eye can see it seems. I think you could host an athletic version of Woodstock.

I don't know what the mix of distances is for Slowtwitcher's, but you might be cutting a big chunk out if you make the race a 1/2IM. My guess is you have a pretty good population of Olympic and Sprint distance racers in here.

If the silver truck you saw was a Dodge 4x4 diesel 3500, that's monty's. if you saw a silver truck drive into that road, that was him.

big pines hwy & big rock creek rd. is the start of the climb (our local climb). yes, it ends at the #2. the climb doesn't end there, you can keep going up, but the official climb ends there. record? a pro cyclocrosser from seattle, matt's his name, clocked himself in 53-something. that's the fastest i've ever heard of. a sometime housemate, john gailson, went 56:40, that's the fastest i've seen. my fastest is 58:10. somebody ought to do it in 45 minutes. it's certainly a climb that can be done that fast.

if we do a slowtwitch something-athlon, i would reckon it'll be distances and events specific to the area. and i wouldn't rule out something like an open water swim, and you take the time. and then maybe the hillclimb, you take the time. and then one of our trail runs. then you add all the times and the low score wins. maybe over 2 days. everybody camps out overnight, big party.

something like that.

It would be fun, and I bet we would get many more takers (like me) if it was an olympic-dist. event instead of a half-iron. Maybe Mr. slowman could throw in a fist clinic afterward for 1/2 price or something?

Is this the dirt road you were talking about? (Shot taken from my super secret bunker based camera that I control by satellite from home) That tractor looks silver to me. 12:54 pm according to my camera, about two hours before it started snowing/hailing on me in Wrightwood. That was a crappy ride back down to the car. It's hard to make up your mind in those conditions, do you just let go of the brakes, do 30mph and lose feeling in your hands and let your face get pelted, but suffer for less time? Or do you go real slow and keep your hands just semi-numb with that nice pins 'n' needles feeling with no serious pelts on the face, but do so at nearly 3 times the overall cost of sufferage? I kept going back and forth, putting one hand behind my back. I really need some good gloves, it's the only weak part of my gear.

Great Pics Sojourner..thanks for sharing.
Man do I miss Cali.

Hopefully this can all come to some kind of fruition in the near future..keep it low profile..ST family, camping and like Mr.Dan said, low score wins.

From the terrain it looks like maybe the bike can be a TT/Tri bike Hill Climb, then get off the Tri bike, and hop on a MTB for the off road portion?

Hey Dan-

I grew up in the foothills of Sierra Madre north of Pasadena..I remember losing a dog to the coyotes..looks like you live in Coyote central.
