edit: Correction, winning time was 13 min 1.57 seconds.

I've had more than one person tell me that they have run a few marathons, mostly in the 5 to 10K range. I've also heard a woman tell me she used to run a 3-minute mile back in her high school days. It was hard not to laugh, poor thing.

A woman once told me she was a Ironman triathlete. When I asked her what her long runs in training were she said she went around the high school track 6 times . .and she didn't have a road bike ..did all her riding on her mountain bike ..but she was going to buy a "faster" bike

Good one. I've never gotten the full IM line, but people ask me all the time if I'm doing a full triathlon.

Forgetting that is impossible. I was just grading an exam I gave to my class last week. It's a business calc class, made up most of freshmen and sophomores in college. You don't know how many times I saw

(1/3)-1=-4/3

And these people want to graduate college with a degree in accounting or economics!!!

Someone once told me they lost a bet, so they had to swim 3000 laps of butterfly in the pool.
I said, "Really, 3000 laps thats a lot. Are you sure it wasn't 3000yds?"
They said, "Nope, 3000 laps"
Me: "Wow, how long did that take you?"
He said, "Like 2.5 hours."
Me: "Wow, that would be almost a WR on a bike."
Him: "Yeah, I was pretty good in HS."

I realize everyone here thinks of marathon as a unit of distance (as does google -- it will convert units for you... try, e.g., "marathon in lightyears"), but marathon has more than one meaning. From Merriam-Webster, for example:

1 : a long-distance race: a : a footrace run on an open course usually of 26 miles 385 yards (42.2 kilometers) b : a race other than a footrace marked especially by great length
2 a : an endurance contest b : something (as an event, activity, or session) characterized by great length or concentrated effort

Perhaps we should forgive Bob Costas this one, and bash him instead for the continued negative attitude towards athletes who don't win gold medals every time they compete.

(edit) oops, got distracted before I hit send, and everyone beat me to it. But I'll leave in my Bob Costas comment.

Couple weeks ago a woman told me she was "going to do IronMan" cause she cant run distance any more and "a marathon is out of the question because of bad knees"...neat. She made my coffee wrong too.

OK--so he might have been right to use it, but he is still a douche bag.

I guess this means that the ironman can be considered a "triple marathon": a swimming marathon of 2.4 miles, a cycling marathon of 112 miles, followed by a running marathon.

I think Bob Costas is giving Al Trautwig a good competition for sportscaster douchebaggery. Still, AT has said too many idiotic things over the years, and I don't think Bob can catch up. Well, maybe he'll enjoy his 2nd place.

Wrong-o. Words have meanings. I have seen the definition, and I disagree that its use here is accurate or appropriate. In fact, it was just network hyperbole. If the word marathon is to be stolen its use should have some relevance to its original essence, which is "a hard thing" but "endurance". 14 minutes of speed skating may be painful and ath-a-letic, but it is not an endurance event.

What is most annoying is that Bob Costas knows better, and yet he said it with a straight face. I was watching that with my mom and stepdad and instantly laughed "a six mile marathon!?" They didn't seem to recognize anything wrong with that though.
