Former pro cyclist. Text updates said he's bailing after the first loop of the run.

If he is not "racing" this race, any idea what he is training for? With that swim and bike time, he's got a lot of potential in the sport.

If he bails today at the halfway point, then we know why. It looks like he's fast enough to win the Kona ag championship.

Impressive time on that course. It's deceptive, but in the end it can REALLY take it out of you.

That is kind of what a young Mark van Akkeren did a few years back.

My friend Eric Roy, brother of Marc Roy who brings you sportstats timing at Mdot events did this at the Canadian irondistance event last weekend....53 min swim and 4:34 bike. He won the "Aquabike" event and went on to run 21K. He is training for Chesapeakeman...not as high profile as what Nate is doing!

Nat Faulkner used to be a pretty solid bike racer.
Don't know if multisport has changed his build but he was a cannonball. He could still climb though!

Well if you want to pay $500 to do a workout, I guess it is your prerogative. Pretty much showing off, not very classy. If you are not even planning on completing an event try not to upstage the people actually doing the race. Do an aquabike, race a HIM or do this at a small time event. Apparently this guy wants a big target on his back for Hawaii.

Re: AG has fastest bike split at IMWI? [Tri_yoda] [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't see anything wrong with what he did. One of the very best things you can do for yourself is race. Racing is some of the best training. If your plan is to do what he did, then fine. Stick to the plan. Athletes do it similarly in different athletic events. I don't know if he did this...but it is common courtesy to tell your competition that your plan is to pull out early, as it's a training race. I'm sure there has been lots of other people that have done the same thing, just on a smaller scale. I mean, not at that speed. Just some MOP'ers using a race for a training day. Been done before, and will be done again. If I could afford it, I would do it too! I would not draw any attention, because I would not be leading! ;-)

Re: AG has fastest bike split at IMWI? [Tri_yoda] [In reply to] Can't Post

I would assume he signed up a year in advance like everybody else and at that time there was no plan other thant race/participate and do the whole thing.
Since he qualified for IMH earlier and wants to focus on IMH this year that would leave him with 2 options: show up and do what he did or do not show up.
He might as well show up since he paid his entry fee.

Fred.

Re: AG has fastest bike split at IMWI? [Tri_yoda] [In reply to] Can't Post

I disagree.

This guy would have signed up for the race a year ago like everybody else. He didn't decide last week to do a big training day for $500. At the time of registration he probably thought he needed to do this race to qualify for Kona. By getting a spot at 70.3, he no longer needed to finish the race so he did what he wanted with his entry fee.

Good point. IM events (and tri events) in particular do not make it easy to plan ahead. Faced with the choice of eating the entry fee, I guess this may be a reasonable compromise.

IMMOO is a qualifier for 2009, so he potentially gave up a slot by pulling out. On the other hand, by not beating himself up, there is a very strong chance that he could win his AG in Kona and receive a 2009 slot there. If he decides to turn Pro in 2009, neither will matter.

In my book, it's not the fastest split unless you finish.....

He's certainly very talented and probably "could" have had the fastest split, but evidently has his sights set on something different.
