70.3 bottle location question Can't Post

I am planning ahead for at least one half iron race next summer. My question is about hydration location. I have a profile aerobottle which is great for shorter distance, but what do people do for half races? Saddle mounts? Stick with the frame mounts? I am thinking the race will not have bottle exchanges very often, so what I bring is what I have. Advice?

In addition to your profile aerobottle you need one round bottle cage someplace on your bike. When you start the race have your aerobottle filled with what you want to drink first and a throw away bottle in the round cage with what you want to drink second. When the aerobottle is empty, fill it with what ever you brought with you in the round bottle. When you get to the bottle exchange throw away your empty round bottle and grab either a water or electrolyte bottle and put it in your round cage. When your aero bottle is empty fill it with what ever you got at the bottle exchange. Don't carry lots of extra liquids that you don't need. They weigh a lot. Use what they offer on the course. Tim

For me, the preferred order of bottle placement is:

1. Aerobottle
2. Down Tube
3. Seat Tube
4. Behind

I need about one bottle/hour of liquid, plus nutrition. So, if there's one bottle exchange on the course, I could maybe get away with just two bottles (aerobottle with water, down tube bottle with concentrated nutrition) and refill one bottle at the exchange. If there's two or more exchanges, then definitely all I need is two bottles.

If there happened to be no bottle exchanges, I would probably carry three bottles--two of water and one of concentrated nutrition. YMMV, but if you're looking at a bike time of between 2:40 and 3:10 (middle of pack), then you'll probably need to drink about three bottles worth of stuff.

I am with cervelorider on this, I use one on the bars(water) and my nutrition bottle behind the seat. Two bottles is all you need, get it at the aid stations. I use carbo pro 1200 diluted to 500 cal with good sucess, I would try something like that in training.

The plan (at the moment) is to do Timberman. I am pretty sure they have a few bottle exhanges, but obviously, my question is whether to exchange from the frame or from behind the saddle. I saw a lot of saddle mounts at the pre-race, but I also saw a lot of frame mounted bottles, so which is more aero/better access...? Thanks! Any Timberfolks? Chrissie?

personally I did the aero bottle but mine was just throw away bottles. You could just grab water and fill the aero bottle. I use the proven Johnny-o aero bar mounting method.

You could quite easily just live offa the course, they have plenty o' aid stations at Timberman.

That being said, here's what I do, fwiw:

Aerobottle, water only. Refill around halfway mark, if necessary.

Frame cage, fuel bottle. I use Infinit, and one bottle has all my calories and electrolytes for a HIM bike ride.
(I just use a second such bottle for IM's, and pick it up at special needs)

I can keep fueling and hydration separate this way. On a cool or normal day, the aerobottle of water and fuel bottle are plenty.
On a hot day, I can take in extra water, but still keep tabs on my calories very easily.
YMMV.
