5:30 on the trainer? Shoot me... Can't Post

here we go... i have been to AZ EVERY week-end to train and now I am going to Napa friday night and need to get my 6 HOURS brick done, friday morning , in cincinnati.. Weather in cincy: 29 degrees, feels like 17 with 20-30 mph WINDS.. Ouch! so what do i do? suck it up, ride some outside? ride on the computrainer? go spin for 2 hours , finish on the trainer? ALL those options give me a headache.. suddenly, even the rain in phoenix sounds good:-( I need either suggestions or just need to be cheered up... In the meantime, I will go run in this crap... I guess it could be worst, I could be covered in snow.. (it is snowing here but not accumulating...)

I really feel bad for you, I mean flying to Napa for the weekend, what a chore. Especially after fying to phx for training all these weekends. It must be just horrible. I don't know how you can go about your day.

Do the trainer ride, or really rough it and hit up the computrainer :)

Erik in Columbus, 25 deg, and snowing.

how about you take some rest?
every time you were in PHX and after PHX you said you were fried. then sunday you rode under 16mph avg...maybe having an easy week would be the smart thing to do instead of digging a deeper hole?
Or maybe talk to your coach...

hey come on , be nice here... it is actually really rough to fly to phoenix EVERY week-end to train. I do all that to get ready for IMAZ and everytime I go, it rains there.. Lots of flying, different time zones and I own a business. I need encouragement, not someone to tell me that I am a whiner or something.. Do you have any idea how much sacrifices and energy I have put in training for this race?? i just need a little cheering up to do a 6 hours workout in this weather... thanks for your support

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, I was really just joking with you. I just find it kind of funny what some people consider rough. Many people would be quite grateful to be in your situation.

I have been training all winter in this crap. It is tough to stay focused, but necessary to meet my goals.

Good advice, Francois, sounds like Marisol needs to take an easy week. Why don't you (Marisol) ride for as little or long as you want on the trainer, but don't force yourself to ride X hours. Just get on, and ride how you feel. If it's1 hr, that's fine. If you crank out 4 hrs, bonus. Just take the pressure off yourself, and listen to your body.

I think if Francois is advising you to take a break to avoid overtraining, it's time to take a break.

I did a 6h-2h brick with the ride on the trainer (winter 98-99) if that can make you feel any better...
on the bad side, this will do nothing good for your sanity...

anyway, the thing is that you DO have a coach...explain the situation...you've been tired pretty consistently over the past weekends (from your posts) and none of these weekends were easy...

Re: 5:30 on the trainer? Shoot me... [Marisol] [In reply to] Can't Post

It usually works for me, when I know the planned workout will be a mental challenge, or if I'm tired. Half the time, I quit early because I don't feel great after getting warmed up/part way thru, other half I end up finishing the entire planned workout. But I'm from the school of "better to be 10% undertrained than 10% overtrained".

Mein Hertz schwimmt ins Blut.

But seriously...I've done the travel thing out west for work (sadly, 99% work, 1% play....I was kept on a really short leash). I'd have to say that travelling is REALLY stressful. Not knowing what your goals are, a little voice tells me that someone's digging a pretty deep hole right now.

Now excuse me as I look out my "office" window and contemplate 1.5 hours on the stationary bike tonight. It's 25F, snowy, and windy as heck....(sigh).

my coach said to do it.. last one.. then homefree with the weather hopefully. He said I can cut it down to 4:30... and yes it makes me better to hear people that are doing this as well:-) I was getting mad here for a while... am I not suppose to be tired after these hard weeks? 3 more to go.. how are you feeling?

Have you been riding outside at all in similar weather (i.e. are you used to it)? If so, I say ride the whole thing outside. If you've got the clothing and are used to it, it shouldn't really be that bad.

It could be worse - you could be in North Dakota! (did that cheer you up? :-)

Re: 5:30 on the trainer? Shoot me... [Marisol] [In reply to] Can't Post

I'll be riding indoors tonight because work and school obligations will keep me occupied until well after dark.

Otherwise I'd ride outdoors.

Do I have a Computrainer? How can I put this?

Sadly, no!

I have a Tacx Cycleforce Swing with a PT for telemetry. Sadly the PT is on the blink and being inspected by the good people at Saris/Cycleops/whatever. I might see it again in a month or two...maybe. So nuance is out the window; I'll be riding indoors with the gerbil workout posse and going by P.E. What the heck, it's not like I have something like...Early season races or....what do they call it? Goals?

Re: 5:30 on the trainer? Shoot me... [Marisol] [In reply to] Can't Post

Hate to say it,but, you sound fried.
Fried in a bad way.You need to be enjoying your build to IM.
Its not just physical conditioning that needs fine tuning ...your mental focus needs to be wholesome too.

There's a point of diminishing returns in one too many "Brick"workouts if your body is not on the same page as your scheduled sessions.

The brain tends to hold back the release of Endorphine if you hit that overtraining phase.

When I hear things like "I'm going to Napa to ride..after coming back from AZ " and I don't detect any joy in the tone....somethings real wrong.

I've been running and Mountain Biking here in New England where's its real cold..but, I love every minute and mile of it!
Its a privilege and a blessing to be able to tear it up day in and day out.....

Perhaps you need to back off a bit and get back to that PLACE.

Unless you're planning on a sub 9:30 IM time...its not going to hurt you one bit to chill for a day or two.

Be Good/ Train Smart

Re: 5:30 on the trainer? Shoot me... [Marisol] [In reply to] Can't Post

I am from Canada and have done it once in prep for IM NZ. It was hard on the mind and the butt so took a few breaks in between which really helped (could do a series of bricks ride 1hr run20mins repeat as an alternative). I often wondered if it really was of any benefit to put myself through that session. On the other hand it gives you bragging rights to some extent!

back to the topic- look at it another way. Do you really need our support? You know (and your coach knows) what needs to be done to get to the start line in shape both mentally and physically. So just go and do it. With that mindset 5.30 is no problem.

Have fun!

It's supposed to be in the 40s and dry on Friday in Cincinatti according to weather.com. That's nothing to complain about this time of year.

If you are not excited for the opportunity to get outside at that temperature this time of year, tell your coach to f-- off do a 6 hour nap/dvd brick on Friday.

It's funny that in all overtraining studies I've read, "tone in internet posting" was never evaluated as an overtraining marker... maybe you're on to something? ;-)

Now seriously, I would say it's kind of hard to diagnose overtraining by reading some posts. Even when you're around an athlete is tough.

So the people that should know are the athlete and his/her coach. Friends and other athletes can help, but only if they're around an athlete. Slowtwitch (unfortunately) does not qualify.

Even when you're around an athlete is tough.

It's not all that tough if you know the athlete. If an athlete has been going hard at it for awhile and suddenly seems irritable, depressed, etc etc, without having some reason why, it's pretty safe to say they're skirting overtraining. Foolproof, no, but a decent rule of thumb.

When I said tough, I meant fullproof. Of course the signs you mention are a good rule of thumb, used by coaches everywhere.

Let me know when you do the workout on the trainer on Friday so I can be available via cell phone. I am sure that you will be calling around. All this grief will be great to laugh about the day after IM when you have qualified. Plus you won't get three flats on the trainer!! let me know if you want to chat for awhile on Friday. I will get on my trainer as well so you don't feel too bad. Keep up the good work. I think you are doing great.
Fornerly briantryintri but let's face it.......I have tried and I suck at it.

I admire your work ethic and determination. But I really have a hard time feeling bad for you as some of us end up DRIVING a 1000 miles just to do the race. Count your blessings and get over it. Good luck and I hope your hard work pays off.
