"where fancy shoes won't"
Tell that to the people forking over silly amounts of $ for Newtons when a pair of Pegasus will do just fine.

from times this season:
FTP from a 36k TT, flat, out and back, no wind.
267 watts, weight at 69kg.
best mile time was junior year of college (two years ago) at 4:45, this season 4:48
400m run as of july this year, on a track, was 57.
swim, i could not even come close, best would be a 1:10 yrd pace. right at 5 min. that is PUKE MY GUTS OUT pace.
i will be the first to say i BLOW at longer stuff. my swim, run, and bike times drop off fast over the sprint/olympic distance stuff. guys i can hammer into the ground in these distance (up to olympic) RAPE me in a half.

LOL. Good on yah. 5:07 mile here. 5:45 400 meter swim TT and my limbs were tingling upon completion. During the Olympics I was curious and sprinted a 100 meter on the track. I went 13.3 and it felt like my legs were going to blow apart. The 1500 men run 52 second final 400 meter times. Do the math, my 100 m equals there final 400 m pace in a 1500. I'm not sure I could run 400m with Geb and i'm with you on the finishing in the top 2% of most races I enter.

After 30 years of competitive running I've never found a pair of shoes that could make me faster. However, I have noticed that my level of fitness and the type of training seems to play a key role in how fast I can run ..... maybe I should get some Newtons before my marathon on Sunday :)

I can make the 70 second 400m (track repeats usually 69-72).
800 repeats usually 2:25 to 2:35. Have seen a 2:20.
Can't make a 4:30 mile (PR 5:05)
I call you a liar.
Why?
2:20-35 800 REPS and not able to run a sub 5 mile?
DISAPPROVED!

I really shouldn't get involved in this thread, but the statement,
I'm also happy to see the Beer Mile making a comeback. It's been 16 years since my PR of 5:18...
fits in perfectly with Dev's assumptions of all STers being able to run sub-70s 400m, have an FTP of 400+W, etc.
According to:
http://www.beermile.com/records/ref_wr
that would have been the second fastest Beer Mile of all time, and you did indeed hold the world record until last December!
Yup, it's true. I did the Beer Mile (actually 1600m) in 5:18 in 1992 at the annual Amherst College end of track season Beer Mile (you'll see a number of later Amherst runners in the WR list). Haven't done it since and am well aware of the beermile.com website. And until just now I thought my time was still the world's best. Damn. Our beer mile did drink out of plastic cups (full 12 oz beer poured into plastic cups) which makes chugging easier and is apparently against official beer mile rules. I was a miler in college and have never lost a beer chug contest, so was made for the Beer Mile. I definitely need a comeback, although 5:18 will surely never happen again.
So, it may be a typical ST post, but in this case at least it is also a legitimate "accomplishment", and unfortunately, one of my finest.

Crap... your right. It was 4. Polk High, someone should make letter jackets with complete with "Bundy" embroidered on the front.
FTP 283 (30 min power record in Power Agent) Okay, I'm confused again... FTP highest average power of 30min or 60min?

Damn, that's impressive, then! In fact I think it's more impressive than a 400+W FTP!
I won't even ask uli to APPROVE/DISAPPROVE on plastic cups vs. cans and 1600m vs. 1 mile.
How many other world record holders post on ST? We're not worthy...

Dev,
Since I don't know what FTP means then I can hardly claim that, but I'm pretty sure I could run under 70 seconds for 400 meters. Getting ready for my mile in 2005 I ran 6x800 and averaged 2:23, but that is only 72 seconds per, so I'm a bit slow. :) Actually, one of those was a 2:19, so I did run under 70.

Beautiful sunny 25degree day here in Calgary today. 4 miles warm-up @ 6:30pace, 4 x 100m strides progressively faster, 400M - 56.8, 3.5 miles cool down @7min pace (all in my Pegasus, no spikes needed).
I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow but that was fun, I haven't been on a track in almost a year.

Dude...don't even try sandbagging this. I KNOW you can run under 70. In fact, I'm pretty damn sure you can run 62-63 with relative ease and could challenge the 60s mark if you put a bit of work into getting there. Not only that, your Iraq mile was well under 70s/400 if the distance was even remotely close. That wasn't that long ago, and you've not had a lapse in fitness since then.
Then again...I hope you CAN'T run a 70 right now. That would mean you are WOEFULLY out of shape and that I have NOTHING to worry about next week at AmZof!

Chad, stop sandbagging and let's see who breaks 56.8 at our lame ass ST virtual track meet....you might be the only hope since I have not seen Paul Thomas nor Slowman (bunch of pussies...) throw their hat into the ring

Although there are posters in this thread scoffing that 70 seconds is a poor high school girl's time, I still claim that for most on this forum 70 seconds is not a gimme....even the studly Puskas a 9:40 IM stud had to work for it and blew the rest of his training day on account of one 69 second attempt...my calves and feet are sore after yesterday's 10x100m in 16-20 seconds each...
and although many have claimed that they can do it, few have actually gone out in the past two days and tried....talk is cheap!
70s is not a gimme. It is hard for me. I swear everytime I barely break 70 I think my glutes are going to break. I think I ran a 68/69 during a workout. Right now most of my intervals are on trails (1000s/ miles/ 2000s/ and 2 miles) I think I ran a 68/69 during a track workout in the summer though. If you take my 1/2 marathon or 30K time Mcmillan states I should be running a 4:30 mile.....whatever....I can barely break 5 minutes.

Sometimes I wonder about these calculators....I think the older you are the less your 5K time scales downwards at 400-1600m distances....the younger you are, the less they scale upward to half marathon or marathon. What's your half marathon time now?

I just did a 1:48 600 meters. Was shooting for a 2:22 800 but just didn't have any speed today. The only good thing was that my HR was 179-180.
This was my first time with a watch or HRM since August, 2005, but that year I could do 5Ks with a 181-182 HR. Anyway, I am going to try again for my 2:22 800m on Sunday or Monday. It was a nice change to do a timed workout.
In any case, with my slow run I lost Rick Roll privileges for the remainder of 2008.

Nah, Dev. The calculators only predict what you OUGHT to run, if you put in some work at a given distance, relative to a known time. If a 5k time scales down to a 4:30 mile...that doesn't mean the individual can necessarily run that TODAY...but OUGHT to be able to do it with a modicum of work...much the same as a 37 min 10k might turn out a 2:54 or so prediction for a marathon. We all know it takes a lot of work to get to 2:54 marathon...but a person capable of a 37 min 10k ought to have the raw materials to get there.

Did you at least come through 400 m in 70 seconds....seems like you should have unless you slowed down quite a bit over the final 200m for that 1:48 600m?

Hey Dev,
I have a 1/2 marathon in two weeks. I am hoping to break 1:13. I think I can do it. I nailed a 3 x 5k workout 2 weeks ago (17:09/ 17:11/ 17:10) which is good barometer for me. I need a good group to work with like last year when I ran a 1:13:42. My mileage is up a bit this year so the added strength can help. We shall see. I am itching to race.

Everyone should support their local all-comers track meets in the summer. Great way to get a workout and experiment with shorter distances. I get hammered in the 400 and 800 but it is still a blast. I do try to do 400/ 800/ mile/ 2 mile of some combination. I leave the 100 to my son.

I have to agree with TriBriGuy on the calculator thing. I did only volume leading up to my mile attempt in 2005 and opened up with an underwhelming 4:51 to start out my speedwork. Six or eight weeks later, I can't remember, I ran the 4:25. You just can't be at your potential at every distance at the same time.
Remind me of this 400 meter silliness after AmZof. I've got $700 invested in plane tickets and car rental and I'm not blowing it on a pulled hamstring. I'm old now.
Not sure I'd manage better than 56.8 anyway. My best in college was a 55 in a relay. I did run a 57 when I was 14, but those days of speed are nearly 25 years removed.
