Oh Crap, I misread that, I thought it was under 5:00 for the swim. Just read the original title and it's 4:30. Still think I'm good but I'll have to go do it tomorrow morning...till then, just kind of forget all the chest pumping of my previous post (he says with a red face)...by the way, did I mention, I can't even remember swimming over a 5 minute 400? Yea, I'm THAT cool!

Well Dev...

I'm not a stud, but here are my numbers (all confirmed in the past 4 weeks):

Run 400 meters (track, running shoes, no taper, lane 2): 69 seconds (30 September 2008)--This made the rest of my workout really suck (I was barely hitting 80 seconds for the other 400s).

Bike FTP: Not sure, but I did 30 minutes at 310 watts on 10 September 2008 (Tacx Cosmos Trainer so it might be a tad high)

Swim: I'm not even close...My best swim is 200 YARDS in 2:52 (08 September 2008)...I SUCK in the water.

Current body fat 10% (according to "BodPod"), 5'10.8" tall, 154 lbs. All cholesterol, etc. = "in the green."

So, apparently, I can run with Geb for 1/4 mile, ride with Lance on an easy day for an hour, and can drown David Hasselhoff. Really sad for a guy who once ran 400 meter hurdles in college (Division 3), raced his bike as an amateur in France (AS Meudon) and is a Navy Diver. I think I'll take up the competitive eating circuit...

BTW, the Navy SEALs used to do a 300/3:00 workout (bench press 300 lbs. and then attempt to run a 3:00 marathon)...That's the complete package!

Cheers,
Puskas

Congrats to SpencerDC, FexyGuy, Puskas and a few others who have all "run with Geb" for 400m today.

Seriously, 400m in 70 seconds is not trivial...it really puts Geb's marathon into perspective. For the moment, I have managed today to keep up with Geb for a few 100m splits that were 16 seconds on a grass Canadian football field (110 yards), but the 400 will be hard!!!

C'mon, be honest;

This thread is just another "geek-check", right?

I mean, how much of a tool would you have to be to actually read this thread, and then go test yourself solely to log-in and post the results.

kudos on a very very funny thread!

You're calling bullshit on estimating an 800m time based of a a 5 mile race result? I don't think that is too outrageous, unless I have literally no top gear, if I can run 20 consecutive 87sec quarters I don't think a couple 70s is completely out of the realm of possibility.

If I was basing a marathon time off a 5k split I could see your BS call.

I'll try to find a track sometime soon and get back to you.

If you regularly do 400 repeats as part of your training it is not outrageous. However if you ran a 29:03 off of just a huge base you may have trouble breaking 2:25 for an 800m let alone 2:16. I am in 27:30 shape for 5 miles right now and I think it is highly possible I would struggle to break 2:20.

running 2 consecutive 67 second 400s is a lot different than stringing together 20 87s ones.

Hey Dev,

I'll never have a 400w FTP, nor will you, or anybody around here not named Bjorn.
But, in the spirit of Run with Geb, here's about the closest I could ever do to Ride with Bjorn:

Tinker Hill:
Duration: 4:20
Work: 103 kJ
TSS: 13.4 (intensity factor 1.361)
Distance: 0.51 mi
Min Max Avg
Power: 176 547 395 watts
Cadence: 44 109 54 rpm
Speed: 5.3 12.4 7.1 mph
Pace 4:51 11:22 8:29 min/mi

Yeah, I know - 5w short. Close, but no cigar.
Oh yeah, and 55:40... but who's counting? ;-)

float , hammer , and jog

On ST hiatus from 11/1/08 until Spring '09

I don't use power on the bike. I can't swim very well. I can run ok. Just thought I'd add to the thread because I can do under 70sec for 400m.

Before du nationals in richmond april/08. Early in the race week did 5 x 400m:
1. 69
2. 68
3. 69
4. 68
5. 68

I went up to race tupper lake half ironman june/08. Early race week I did 5 x 400m:
1. 68
2. 68
3. 69
4. 69
5. 68

Week before that I did 5 x 800m:
5 x 800:
2:35
2:29
2:28
2:28
2:27

I think it is tough to do under 70sec for 400m. I haven't been doing much speedwork since june so I think if I went to the track right now I'd have a tough time at it. Back in april and may I was racing sprint races almost every weekend so I had some good speed. But right now I haven't been running faster than 5:30 pace so a sub 70sec 400 might just be 72.

Just out curiosity, what was the intended benefit of this training in relation to events you were doing? Occasionally I will do a few 300s at this kind of pace the week before a sprint race, where I expect to run under 5:30 per mile, but I feel like even this is a masturbation type workout.

Yo 42,

Here's my data for the same race. I'm 5'10", 155 lbs.
FTP estimated at 290w as of that date.
Entire workout (234 watts):
Duration: 2:04:52 (2:05:10)
Work: 1707 kJ
TSS: 133.7 (intensity factor 0.812)
Norm Power: 240
VI: 1.02

I have a decent position, on an ok bike (old Alu/CF B2 - ext. cables, Ouzo Pro fork).
Jet 90 C2 front, disk cover rear. Bonty RXL Pro tires, Michelin 18-20 latex tubes.
Profile aero bottle, RSS "aero" (round w/ "dimples") water bottle on seattube.
Spiuk helmet.

I think the combo of: 2k short, flat, smooth, and endless slingshot drafting (and it was also a mostly calm, overcast day) is what led to the ridiculously fast times. I was shocked at how fast I went for such relatively low watts.

For reference, my HIM PB bike prior was at Tupper Lake - I biked 2:22 on a rolling course that gains over 2k feet.
Entire workout (217 watts):
Duration: 2:21:11 (2:21:56)
Work: 1775 kJ
TSS: 134.7 (intensity factor 0.769)
Norm Power: 227
VI: 1.05

OK - what's my CdA then?? Apparently, my bike itself is incredibly UNaero, what with all the exposed cables, alloy Vision base bar, non-aero fork, generic "aero" frame tubing, no rear wheel fairing, Profile bottle up front, seattube water bottle, etc etc etc.
I guess on a P4 I could go <2hrs easily, huh?? ;-)

Murph, you have an incredible position on the bike and the rider is 70% of the drag. I would like to use myself as a comparison, because I weigh almost the same as you do and although I do not have a powermeter I have done enough hillclimb races this year to say my FTP power is almost exactly the sames as yours, I would even venture to say it could be a tad higher. My best HIM bikesplit (before you did ESPIRIT) was 10 minutes slower. I am not even in the same universe as you in terms of a bike split. The only difference is position, yours is really good and mine is well, maybe I should take up sailing. At least I can swim;)

Well if you really can run 70s quarters, there aren't many people in the ghetto who will be able to catch you unless they post on ST as well...

They don't have to do a 70 sec quarter. All they have to do is a sub 16 100 ;)

This month let's give guys time to work in some speed and then crack 70 seconds in a 400m run. This should be hard but achievable by some, but I believe only the minority of ST posters.

In November we will have to do the "break 70 second for 100m swim" challenge after everyone is in the hurt locker with broken body parts on account of trying to break 70 seconds for 400m running and thereby confined to the pool :-)

You better make this 100 yards, most of us don't have access to a pool in meters.

I agree that it's a lot different, but my "speedwork" typically involves 1200s and sometimes 800s. So I am not too concerned about meeting the 400m requirement even though I don't do 400s regularly as part of my training (or haven't in years I should say).

You realize that 70 seconds is about 25% faster than 87 seconds. This means that compared to your 87 second 400 m speed, you would need to be at the 400m point in your run in the same time it usually takes you to get to 300m. Not sure if you realize the difference in effort between say 300W and 400W but that's about how much effort you'll need to step up....

Why would I make this up? It's gone from a fun challenge to condascending talk. I ran track and cross country in high school, rowed competitively in college, and have been running and doing tris for years. I understand pacing, effort and even math!

Sorry buddy, if I was out of line...let's keep the challenge fun and the smack talk light :-). Let's face it... anyone can post a bogus time, but its about challenging ourselves and pushing our comfort envelopes. Its rare on ST that we have any challenge that is about going "all out" for approximately 1 minute!

No worries. Once my life settles down a bit and I find a track I will report back, even if it is a week or two and this thread is buried, I'll report back.

You said a 400m straightaway was cool but that was met with some resistance by others, so I'll wait to post results until I can find a track. I am going out of town with my g/f and her family this weekend, but if I can make the trip somehow pass by a high school track I'll jump out...telling them they just need to wait 69 seconds or less ;-)

It seems like eveyone on ST is a mega stud. Everytime I turn around there are dudes talking up their FTP's well north of 300W, everyone seems to be able to run a mile under 5 minutes and swim 400m under 5 minutes too.

FTP?
I've gone 2:09 (1/2split) for what its worth.

On the thread about the marathon world record, I noted that Geb's 400m run pace was basically 70 seconds average for 105.2 consecutive 400m "repeats" without stopping. Then I got all these dudes claiming that they could keep up with Geb's pace for 400, 800 or even a mile (4:40ish mile pace....).

--So I call bullshit on you guys--.

When I am fit (5k shape) I can hang for a few miles....
right now about half that.
Does this count (62sec/400)?? :
Event 47 Men 1500 Meter Run Invitational
================================================================
Name Year School Finals
================================================================
1 Russell Brown UNATTACHED 3:49.66
2 Joel Bosserman UC DAVIS 3:51.72

10 Kyle Ivie CHICO STATE 3:58.43
11 Steven Springhorn CHICO STATE 4:00.38

Ahh yes. swimming. I just PR'd in the 400yd last week: 5:27! Woot! Watch out Marky !!! :)
I'm on the "work full time, have a life, and let one of three diciples give" program.
Maybe if I can drop 3 sec/100 per year.....

Electronically here at ST, I'd swear that I am back of pack racer, but each time I go to races, depending on the field I end up in the 90th - 98th percentile of racers....and I'm talking all my sports....triathlon, running, XC skiing (we won't say anything about swimming, cause I don't enter swim races).

So here's the deal.

Between now and Sunday, all you guys go to the track. Do whatever warmup you like. Taper as much as you want. Heck, take out your high school spikes. Then line up and pull off your fastest 400m. You can pick inside, outside or lane 4....your choice. Record your time and post here on ST. Show us how studly you really are. All honour system

Who is in? I doubt I can break 70 seconds. I'll be hard pressed to do 75 seconds.

Dev

Dev, I would think a 400W FTP would be more like a 3:50mile or a 3:50 400free....ie world class. Any triathlete who really had a 400W FTP would have won quite a few IM races. I'm not even close.

For what it's worth I think I could keep up with Geb for 400m.
