"Ricco, Piepoli and Schumacher accounted for five stage wins at the Tour! That means almost 25% of the tour stages were won on CERA."

Can't wait to get my sample pack in the mail!

What...you all haven't ordered yours yet?

Saw Schumacher at the Stuttgart train station before he left to Beijing. He drafted some cash at an ATM.
I wished him to have fun in China.

If nothing, at least now I know what he needed the cash for.

But wait, his parents own a pharmacy.... Nevermind.

Bettini is probably pissed now that Schumacher has already signed his old spot on Quick Step......we'll see how that all plays out, too.

He won 7 times and never tested positive! What else do you want? Isn't that proof that he can crush the dopers year in year out and still be clean??

not true. he tested positive once and they said it was because of a cream to treat his saddle sores. But you notice he doesn't say I've never taken PED's he just says i've not tested postive. Hmmm. Not knocking though. I'm a fan. I'm just putting the thought out there

Re: 2 more...Piepoli and Schumacher [swift] [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't know why that myth gets perpetuated. LA has stated many times that he has never taken performance enhancing drugs (other than during cancer treatment). Also he tested positive for testosterone in a cream. The determination was made that he had a legal exemption for the cream and the level was consistent with the cream.

I have my own suspicions, but at least get the facts correct.

I've never understood the contention that he never said he didn't dope. People think he would repeatedly cheat, but wouldn't didrectly lie, so instead he claims he didn't test positive. Thats kind of a bizaar moral compass.

pretty much explains all the grand tour 'how'd they do that?' performances this year, i.e. sella, ricco, shumacher. only one other guy left i can think of that had a cinderella season...

You thinking of a young guy who was outside the top 30 last year in his first TDF, had no pro wins except his national championship, and this year got a coveted jersey and a major podium spot?

wonder if they will get any of the tri pros using mercs or some other form of EPO.

love how the company develops a undetectable EPO and the puts it on the market and then helps develop the test for it to "trick" all the athletes who would cheat using it.

I really doubt that Roche, the manufacturer, gives a damn if it is detectable or not. They came up with CERA to make money from selling a drug to treat people with anemia associated with acute renal and hepatic failure. Perhaps the less cynical would also add that they wanted to improve the welfare of patients. They hardly did it specifically to catch out doping athletes and I'd be surprised if their work in developing a test went beyond supplying data on the drug and it's mode of action.

yeah, that could be the guy. believe he essentially crashed out of tdf last year. he won a ton of races this season and did get a coveted jersey recently.

and btw, i'm not throwing stones here, just pointing out that many too-good-to-be-true performances have come with assistance.

actually i think i read that the manufacturer imbedded an identifiable molecule that's made it detectable, which is how they're catching guys now.

They didn't. No drug manufacturer will ever do that as it would double the required testing in FDA trials ( with and without ident. mol. ). FDA testing is incredibly expensive as it is and there is no way they would do that out of the goodness of their hearts.

Re: 2 more...Piepoli and Schumacher [Rouleur] [In reply to] Can't Post

Before they decide to develop a new drug, pharmaceutical companies study the size of their target market to see if potential revenues will be enough to cover development costs and then leave some for manufacturing costs (relatively low) and profit, of course. So they do look at statistics to see how many people are out there with acute renal and hepatic failure, etc. Well, Amgen did something similar when developing their version of EPO a few years back and then were pleasantly surprised to see revenues five times higher than expected from this particular drug. And it wasn't because they misjudged the number of potential patients. So, in a gesture of customer appreciation they decided to sponsor the AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA. In 2006 and 2007 thre were no doping controls in this race according to cyclingnews.com, but there was some testing at the 2008 tour as people started talking. All tests in 2008 were negative.

I simply can't understand why the UCI and race organizers make such a fuss about doping in professional cycling. They only embarass themselves.

If you're talking about who I think you are - he did podium in a major stage race in 2006.

Well, I think we are thinking of different people. What's that movie title, "The Usual Suspects."?

I'm thinking that the spotlight of suspicion has to be pointing at a guy who has never been on podium of grand tour and then this year got grand tour podium and jersey and who has a teammate who was caught doping. Like you, I'm not throwing stones, but unfortunately, it is not as if we can have much confidence in athletes (in any sport).
