1st cyclocross bike what should I buy?
Can't Post
I'm looking to buy my first cyclocross bike. I plan on racing it and using it when the weather gets bad which is... pretty soon. I can get an '08 Redline conquest pro for under 600 or or an '08 Felt f1x for for $999.
Which one would you buy if any and why?

Redline. It has a very good reputation, has a better component spec (Rival vs 105) and is way cheaper. If I had a line on a 2008 Redline Conquest Pro for $600, I'd buy it and I'm not even "looking".

I have a Redline and am quite happy with it. My bf rides a Felt FX1 and it's pretty sweet. I'd say the Felt is a step up, but either bike is great. Maybe go with the Redline and upgrade wheels with the money you save.

Check out the Motobecane Fantom too. I'm still trying to decide between that and the Redline for my first cx bike, but it will certainly be one of those two.

I'd go with the Redline of those two. They've really focused on the 'cross market and make good bikes.
If you are also in need of a travel bike, I'd highly recommend the Ritchey Breakaway steel cycloccross bike. It's a great frame and has performed well in the little amount of cyclocross I've done so far. Plus, I've got a great travel bike I can put standard road tires on when I want & fly without paying extra baggage fees.
It's a bit more money than those you've mentioned, so if you don't need to travel you can probably skip it.

I just found out about the wednesday cyclocross practices today on facebook. If I had shoes in the car I'd be down there tonight, weather be damned. As it is, I'm going to try to make it next wednesday even if it is on my 10 year old mountain bike.

Just wear flat shoes. Surely you have some tennis shoes in the car?

... I've got running gear, have my helmet, even have the wife's permission. BUT no bike --unless I buy one tonight. Tough tough call. You're killing me.

If the redline fits it's a good bike--get one with a toptube the same or a tad smaller that your road bike, run the stem a little higher. Avoid the "size smaller" advice, courses are a lot more road like lately. You want a slightly shorter and taller cockpit, that's all.

So if I can hijack this thread, would it be bad form to do your first cross race on an old hard tail mountain bike (Specialized Stumpjumper)? There is a race next month minutes from my home but I don't have a cross bike. Is it frowned upon to use a MTB? I am clueless on cross but it sure sounds like fun...

Not at all. There will be a lot of people like you. We have 1-4 every 'cross practice.
HTFU award goes to Rickn who must have bought a bike after work and showed up at practice tonight in soccer shorts and tennis shoes!

BMC CX02!
Great bike, good geometry, super cool paint job, and affordable to boot.

Fit is a very important factor, as everyone on this forum indicates. The company with the broadest range of sizes is Salsa. The Chilli Con Crosso is a fantastic frameset option, but as a first timer, in need of a "do it all" ride, the La Cruz is a good choice...........<$1300 at Bikeman.com

Get the one you won't mind getting dirty!
CX is fun and probably the most spectator friendly cycling event.

Hey, cyclocross is fun! And jumping off and on a bike is both easier and harder than one would think.
FWIW I ended up getting the Felt f1x for an absolute steal (the redline was the sport not the pro model and I didn't want a triple)
But I didn't manage to kill anyone, got a little dirty, went down nicely on a banked turn and finished each loop in almost dead last. --I can't wait to do it again. Mayhew, thanks for the practice sessions and riding advice, I'll be there next week.

Probably. Hoping to be able to race by then. There's a Pilarcitos race the next day that I will be at for sure. I went to Bikemonkey last weekend for spectating/feeding. It was fun, but I was sad to be sidelined.
