How will you commute with an Endless Pool in your backpack. Or are you towing a trailer with a pool on top with Triyoda swimming in it. If so, does Triyoda offer any additional bonus points?

Can we get double points for commuting on a fixie?

Same here. I'm kind of a nutcase for bike commuting.

My suggestions on the rules:
5 point for each direction of commuting
1 additional point for each 5 miles
1 additional point for each addtional 500 ft of vertical gained
So for example, if your commute was 12 miles each way and you gained and lost 1000 ft for the round trip, and you tacked on an additional mile to make it a total of 25 miles, then you'd get:
10 pts for back and forth (its a pain in the ass to change and shower multiple times per day)
5 points for the 25 miles total
2 pts for the 1000 ft
Total for day, 17 pts.
As you can see, with this gauge the biggest reward is frequency (don't drive your car), mileage (tack on more distance and incorporate additional training) and then vertical (go out of your way to find some hills....)
I think it is fair that we reward people for frequency, miles, and elevation. The goal (I believe) is to get people to work out more and to use cars less. If some bright guy wants to start riding at 4 am to cram in 80 miles before work and end at work, then let's give him credit for some mileage.
But this is just a suggestion. Rules are owned by Triyoda since it is his challenge. Triyoda, what do you say?
Dev
How about 2 points each way
+1 point for each 10 miles of riding (with no cap), but again you do not get points for just riding extra beyond what it reasonably takes to go to work (e.g. if you need to add a few miles to a direct route to avoid dangerous roads, that is fair). The reason I do not want to weight this too much in terms of total miles, is this is a principle based idea. Change your lifestyle, so even if you are only doing 5 or 6 miles you are still really changing your life (it takes a little less time, but there is still the activation energy to jump in and do it) and if it goes too much to shear miles, the people with short commutes will just get buried, even if they are riding every day and really embracing this.
No points for hills. I don't want to make this too complicated. Everyone has bad roads and heat (it was 92 degrees with 90% humidity for my ride home today) and most people have some hills. I have 750 feet of net climbing in a 15 mile ride each way and I am not looking for any handouts.
change the full week bonus to +10 (to adjust for higher overall scoring)
I will adjust the points clubs accordingly.
What say you? I would like to get at least 5 people to say they prefer these rules before we change them.

That's a hard one; Dev's "each way" bonus is meaning for some because there's a couple of folks I got into bike commuting by telling them they could jusr ride downhill/downwind on the way in and bus it home to start. The hills are pretty big too for the Bay Area.
But I think your original points plan is good too.
I could go with either; which one would be most appealing to newbies as opposed to the already competitive commuter vets?

I think you are penalizing those that live within 10 miles. Bottom line is that you want people to leave their cars at home and get training in. Give them points for frequency and give them points for every 5 miles of mileage with no cap and you should be allowed to take as long a detour as you want as long as you start at home and end at work or vice versa...are we not trying to get people to actually use their commute to get most/all of their actual training done without ever touching a car. In many cases, people have to ride through crap to get to their "workout route". If you penalize them by saying that they cannot take this detour to incorporate their main workout, next thing you know someone says, "screw it, I'm driving to my workout".
So my vote is points for frequency, points for mileage in 5 mile increments with no cap as long as you start at home and end at work (or vice versa). I am OK with zero bonus for hills. Also, would you consider giving points for bike commuting to the pool or a run instead of taking a car. I see tons of guys driving to the pool and to runs, when they can just as easily bike. If we are trying to take cars off the road, I vote of "commuting to work or commuting to workouts".

Actually, I don't care what the rules are, I'm in. Somebody just post them when they are settled, although I'd probably lean towards letting Tri Yoda decide since it was his idea.
I commute 2-4 times a week via bike or by running...17 miles each way. So how many points do I get?

My wife and I are both in! We commute together. It's about 12.5 miles each way. Riding singlespeeds.
As of Tuesday night we are at 6 points according to the original rules.
We've been averaging 2-3 rides per week this year, but I'd really like to get that up to 4 per week.
Great idea!

For the run I would agree (but then I run from my door 95+% (office, home, grocery store, etc...)
For the pool well, you cannot really control where the pool is (or lake or river or ocean) wrt home or office. & then you cannot control pool hours. So I think it will be "unfair".
During summer I have 3 pool to choose from that are @ most 2.5K.3K from my office an open @lunch. & if I make a small detour with my morning commute I can swim in Ottawa river. So I am (and you are too :)) very fortunate. But that is not the case for everybody.

This is a great idea! I like Tri_Yoda's original rules which are simple and to the point... Plus it was his idea.
I just started commuting the week before last and so far I love it. For now I am riding my mountain bike with slick tires but I am looking for a singlespeed fixie. I made it four out of five days last week and once this week. I hope to average 3x per week which will be tough once it starts getting cold.

Firstly I have no idea what with no cap means.
Secondly, an 11-mile ride is not the same as an 18-mile ride (my case). 14-mile extra in a day is not negligible.
[but again you do not get points for just riding extra beyond what it reasonably takes to go to work]
So you are ok with penalizing the guy/girl with a short commute. Granted he has the advantage of having an easy commute when he/she wants but then he is stuck!

I haven't seen any concrete changes so I put 2 points:
1 point for round trip riding
1 point for a 26 mile round trip ride
I vote for keeping it simple and easy... although it was 104 on my ride home today ;-)

I like this. Your OP had me at only 2 points and Dev.Paul first rules had me at 20.
This will almost split the difference for me at 9 points for the day.
I have a short commute, four miles each way, and I go home for lunch, so four trips of four miles gives me the 9 points. Some days I'll ride in the morning and drive in the p.m. if I have a run after work, so this still gives me some points.
I like to KISS (keep it simple, stupid).

I'm in, I'll go with the OP's rules, although I live about 4 miles from work so my points won't add up all too fast. But that's alright, it's about the lifestyle.
I have been commuting since the beginning of this year, I eventually want to not drive my car at all (although my GF lives in a remote part of town, damn)

I think the original rules work too. Yesterday was my first day ever to commute to work by bike, so I have 12 points for the day (10 for being a newbie, 1 for the roundtrip commute and 1 because the roundtrip was 30 miles). Although I admit, I had to walk the last hill before my house. It was a lot of fun though.
Superman, I used my day hiking pack (which during the school year doubles as my book pack. It was very comfortable on the bike, I just had to adjust it to fasten low on my hips so my helmet didn't hit it. Check out

.
Happy commuting today everyone!

I'm in and sent a PM.
My only question is about the 5 point bicycle only bonus. It says 4 rides minimum, what if my schedule has me work from home 2 days and only go to the office 3 days per week? I think I should still get credit for riding every chance that I get, otherwise I will need to get on my bike and ride from one end of my driveway to the other in order to say that I rode to work that day.

Thanks for the motivation - I'm in. First ride was this morning.
Only problem is that I'm spending more on food (breakfast & lunch at the cafeteria) than I would have on gas.

How about the triyoda "revised rules" with 1 point extra for every 5 miles with infinite cap no matter how big the detour...let's encourage people to train more as part of their commute. You guys will be amazed how "invisible" you can make the bike training look into your schedule. You can literally get an extra 100 miles in per week without making any additional time concession (OK, some, but not much). I think 10 miles is just too huge granularity. 5 miles is quite reasonable.
My first Ironman after having our son, when I had no "huge blocks of time", I got all my bike miles by either commuting directly or tacking some mileage on. My weekly long ride was Wed and Sun morning and they were both 3 hours hard at half ironman race pace (Wed was a 5:30 am start and I would end the ride at work like today....yes I did 90K before work this morning...start at home, end at work). I did ONE 180K ride in training and that was it. Bike commuting rules.
...and Matt, it is your challenge, so you can overrule the collective whining. I'm just pushing "detour as much as you want" so that people can see how much mileage you can pile on as part of the commute...this has been my training strategy for 20 years, so I'd like other people to learn how much time you can "manufacture this way"....the guy on the age group podium is never more gifted than you...he's usually a better time manager :-)

Encouraging extra miles is huge for the commute. If I go straight, door-to-door, it's only about 7-8 miles. but yesterday on my way in I turned those few miles into 56 miles on my MTB. What is normally a sub-30 min ride was now 3.5 hours, and it felt great. I might do it again today when I go in this afternoon.
