celebrity sighting Can't Post

Ok, so this was a celeb to me anways.

I was at the grocery store yesterday and who did I see walking in from the parking lot and into the store, but Melanie McQuaid! I live about 10 min. from Vail Lake where the Xterra is taking place this weekend. I almost went up to her, but I was in celeb shock I think. It was very cool. She grabbed some fruit and water it looked like and was out of there.

At the very least, it has motivated me to train again for an Xterra this yr. :-)

She's a celeb to me too!
I saw and met Paula Newby Frasier last year at IMLP during the Gatorade morning swims a couple of days before the race. She was incredibly nice and friendly as I stammered something like,"Omigod, it's you...Holy cow! You're my hero...Uh, my name's uh..." I saw her again at T1, waved and yelled,"Hi Paula!" She waved back and yelled,"Have a great ride!" like we were old friends.

Yeah, Mel looked exactly like she does on TV. What is funny is that I was probably the only 1 in the entire store who knew who she is. What caught my eye from the parking lot is that she was wearing Tri clothing, so I'm always curious of fellow peeps, then I see who it really is....OMG!

A couple years back I went to an ITU Race in Bellingham, WA to watch a friend as was so starstruck by Andy Potts, Hunter Kemper, Matt Reed, etc that I was acting like a dope all day. The friend I went up with just keep rolling her eyes at me. I don't do well in the presence of fame. I even got tossed out of a bar for bothering Don Henley when I was in my early 20s.

that's hilarious!

i stammered like a jackass in front of Paul O'Neil at my old health club. He is so freaking hot i thought my head was going to roll off. So, naturally, i took the treadmill that enabled me to giggle and pant at him through his entire squat workout; i nearly collapsed about a dozen times and turned bright red when he caught me blatantly staring.

then, somehow i mustered the audacity to ask him if i brought in his book would he autograph it. he said yes, and then i ran away like a little kid.

after that episode it was painfully obvious that I'M A HUGE DORK!!!!!!!!!!

At Pumpkinman last year, I got a phone call from Joan Benoit Samuelson two days before the race. She want to compete in her very very first Tri.
As the RD, I felt compelled to "take care of her." Little did I know that 15 minutes before the swim start, I'd be at her car, helping to put Speed Laces in her sneakers....all I kept thinking was do not screw this up!! It was amazing.
She held her own in the swim and bike; however trashed all the women in the run...including 2 pros!! She won her AG and was 12th woman overall.
When she was awarded her AG award, the announcer asked her if she wanted to speak; and gave a little humble speech, saying that when she completed her first marathon she said never again, and now that she's completed her first tri she wanted to know when she could sign up for her next.
As a first year director, it could not have been more perfect!!

My girlfriend and I met Tim and Nicole DeBoom here in Houston before the Houston Marathon a few years ago. That's me next to Tim and Tabitha next to Nicole. They were here for Nicole to promote her Skirt Sports at the Marathon expo. They were both super-sweet and called us "their new best friends". I'm sure they meant it. =)

That's a great story! JBS is just the nicest, more down to earth person. My old roommate from college is her sister-in-law and I've heard all kinds of stories about how great she is.

That's so cool! A few years back I was swimming one lunchtime at a pool near my work, and about halfway through my session, who drops in the lane with me? Jill Savege. She noticed my swim cap (think it was from Victoria Nike ITU race - now defunct), asked about my season, what I was training for next, etc. Pretty sure I just said "um, yer Jill Savege" over and over. She was very nice, great smile.

Simon Whitfield and Carol Montgomery used to show up at the North Shore tri as well (that race goes tomorrow - very excited!). Both would spend a lot of time with the KOS racers, I always thought that was really cool. Wonder who will show up this year. ;-)

I fall into the I wouldn't recognize them if they hit me with a stick category. I was cheering for various pros one year at Chigaco Mrs. T's and yelled out "Go Blue Man!" as loudly as I could when this guy all decked out in head to toe blue went running by. My husband then goes to me, "Honey, that was Peter Reid."
Ooppsss... Oh well, we laughed about it all the way home.

The only one I recognized is about a jillion years ago skiing at Aspen my aunt pointed out Chevy Chase eating lunch.

Re: celebrity sighting [kittycat] [In reply to] Can't Post

I work at a photography studio and one of the guys I work with was photographing Simon Whitfield for a Harry Rosen Ad (men's clothing store). He was going to be coming to the studio so I was totally beside myself - I even brought my camera in to the studio so I could take a picture of him. The producer working on the project introduced me to him as the "studio's resident triathlete". We chatted for a while, he asked about my racing plans for the season and I totally gushed about watching him win the 2000 Olympic gold medal. I think I was a babbling idiot but he was a SUPER nice guy, very laid back and really personable. I mentioned to the photographer that I had brought my camera and he said oh don't worry, I'll get you in there and take your picture with him. I was mortified. Sure enough when the shoot was over, I was dragged out of my office and down to the studio. I think I turned about 50 shades of red. I hate getting my picture taken at the best of times so this was pretty awkward (but pretty cool none the less). That was about 3 months ago and I have yet to see the pictures! He did wish me luck with my races before he left the studio. Very cool guy!

I also occasionally ride (ok I watch her go off into the distance) and party with (in the off season) the tough as nails Canadian triathlete Tara Norton. She's coaching my husband and has become a pretty good friend of ours in the process. She's one cool chick and a very talented, inspiring and hard working athlete.
