You all say you're going to be bringing up the rear, but I'll bet you'll still be faster than me. Fortunately I've become excellent at changing flats because I've had three in my last 3 rides (and no, not due to me pinching them! lol).

Ouch! I once had a ride with three flats, all along the lower level road in North Vancouver. This came after over 2 years with no flats. When karma wants to catch-up with you, it does so with a vengeance! Khai and Phil can go burn along the front, and the ladies can just ride their draft ;-)

Why do I get the feeling that despite all these women claiming to be unfit and off the back, that I'll be the one 1/3rd of the way up any given pass as you all crest the summit and start your descent?

Did the person you mentioned driving seem likely? My husband said if we did Friday or Saturday he could do it for us, but not Sunday or Monday since he is doing a mountain bike camp. (How he plans to do that with a broken tail bone, I don't know. I won't even go there, that's probably worth a new thread.) If she can't, I'm feeling out a few college kids that I know around Whistler to see if they can do it. I'll keep you posted how that develops. With a driver, that would make 7 to ride and 6 bikes to haul. It would be cramped, but not impossible.

I can easily take 4 bikes in my car (2 on the roof, 2 inside - possibly 3 inside) as well as two or three passengers comfortably. I may have a driver (possibly a driver and ballast) as well. I think that we'll want two vehicles to shuttle everyone back so that we aren't all super cramped after a long day in the saddle - so if your wrench works out we should be good to go. :)

The first, last and only time I ever got three flats on a ride I was so pissed off I hailed a cab to take me (the rest of the way) home. :p

I just talked to him again and he said yes, he could do it Monday, Aug 4th. The guy is an amazing bike mechanic who can fix anything. I'll have coolers, food, and plenty of tools in my vehicle. I'm also bringing the absolute best oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies I've ever eaten from Whistler's Gone Bakery. All others pale into mediocrity!!! I am planning to start from Pemberton. That's going to be plenty of mileage for me.

Re: Whistler riding partner? [Khai] [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah we can do 2 on top and two or three inside. If we do two inside we can take 5 people. Otherwise 3+ inside and 3 people inside.

Seems like we'll be covered either way... AP

2nd driver secured. We're good to go!

Now we just need to sort out start/meet times, etc.

Is it wrong that I'm a little more excited about the cookies than the ride? :p

Any time is fine for me and my driver. I intend to start at Pemberton. I will have a cooler, tools, etc with my driver and can haul anyone else's extraneous items as well from Whistler.

Well, we'll need to start late enough for those of us driving up from Vancouver on Monday AM, but early enough so we have time to ride/drive back to Whistler/drive back to Vancouver ...

9:30 am ???

PS: I'm looking forward to the cookies too!!!

I'm guessing ~6hrs ride time for a relatively easy paced (but hilly) 130k. That makes for a start time between 09:00 and 10:00 as pretty reasonable as it will get us to Lillooet by ~16:00, back to Whistler by ~18:00 and we can have a nice dinner and be back in Van at a decent enough hour to show up at work the next day. What does everyone else think?

Re: Whistler riding partner? [Khai] [In reply to] Can't Post

Sounds good to me. Where would you all like to eat dinner in Whistler? I suggest a reservation if it's anything other than burgers. (Not that burgers aren't great.) It's peak summer season and crowded up here.

I've found a new little tiny kitchen at the Alpine stop light on the North side of Whistler that I love. They serve up great pasta, salmon etc and beautiful bread. It's off the beaten path from tourist and reasonable. Or were you intending to eat in Lilloeet? There was a previous post with restaurant recommendations there as well.

Are you bringing your daughter in the other vehicle? How old is she? I think she's younger than my daughter who is 10. I haven't made up my mind if I'm putting her in the Sag wagon with the mechanic/driver or leaving her in Whistler. If the girls were close in age, they might have fun playing roadside, swimming on the way etc. My daughter is patient and well behaved. I got the impression your daughter was younger?

Did I mention the cookies are as big as a frisbee???

Anyone who wants to shower at my place before dinner is more than welcome.

Re: Whistler riding partner? [diva] [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh man, my girl is almost 5 and P's boy is almost 4, a bit too young, but you know, if you ever want to do a week long ride WITH THE KIDS, we'd totally be up for doing that and taking turns... maybe next summer!

re: dinner, I'm easy either way. I tend to get hungry quickly whereas P needs about 2 hrs before a big feed. We'll manage around the group's choice. Maybe play it by ear. If in Whistler, we can do a pub, maybe that pub W of 99 at Creekside, "treehouse"??? get out of the village. Heck even Pemberton would work.

So count P and I in for the ride from W->L.

Just so everyone knows, I'm still in. I've been quiet because, like I said in one of my previous posts, I'll just do whatever you guys tell me I'm going to do lol.

Re: Whistler riding partner? [AndyPants] [In reply to] Can't Post

So, while watching the TDF last night and seeing riders take corners too wide and go off the road, to land in trees, scree (talus) slopes or grass and then scramble back up to the road, my husband turns to me and says jokingly: "It's a good thing they are not riding around Lillooet, they'd be dead".

He does have a point that I should pass on. For the last 25 km or so, the highway cuts through a canyon (or gorge) and has some sharp corners and very few guardrails. There is often rock on the road and some of the drops are sheer cliffs down to the very fast flowing Cayoosh. I would hate to read about Khai having to be airlifted out on a backboard or something similar.

Please be extra cautious when descending and taking corners.

I wish I was going too, I would definately struggle on all of the hills.

Enjoy the cookies.

Sharon

Just a ping as a reminder: we are doing this Monday right? P and I are totally stoked about this. In fact I am debating buying a 34 for my small ring on my Olmo for this ride... oh and the cookies of course! ;-)

Guess we'll meet in Whistler at what? 9am?

Reconfirmed with bike mechanic/driver this morning. We are good to go.
Cookies will be ordered and picked up Sunday. Where do we want to meet? I'm sitting on the fence on whether or not I will take off from Whistler with you all or in Pemberton and save my energy for the rest of the ride. Any details I'm missing? Andypants, did you do Pemberton Festival? We did and I can't say I would do it again. There were lots of logistical problems. It was not a good atmosphere for children. Coldplay was incredible though. Definitely the high light of the weekend.

Hell yeah! Monday Aug 4th, 09:00 in the (gravel) day lots - unless you guys want to meet somewhere in the village... I could be convinced to do that pretty easily as well. If we're meeting near coffee we might have to call it an Italian start though... :p

I've got a driver and ballast and will have the bike racks mounted so I'm good to carry 4-5 bikes and 2-3 people back from Lillooet. Not 100% sure if they're going to sag as well or just hang out in the Village though :p

Ooooh - did you ask anyone about that beforehand? I definitely wouldn't take kids to that... It's largely a drunkfest with the music being a secondary feature. Great bands, but certainly not somewhere I'd take kids. Glad to hear that you had a good time in spite of things.

I don't know Pemberton at all, nor how long it will take us to ride there from Whistler. Maybe you can tell us as you've done the ride before? If you like, we can call you as we roll out so you have 30min or whatever to get ready. Or you can just come and ride with us - I've been off the wagon for a few weeks (since Victoria, really) so I certainly won't be setting any land speed records. Can't speak for Phil though... especially going uphill. That mofo can climb!
