What IM should I do in 2010?
Can't Post
Hi ladies,
I'm signed up to do IMAZ Nov 2009, and barring any major disasters, would like to do another in 2010. I know it's VERY early, but I pose this question:
What North American IM has been the best overall experience for you? From lodging to scenery to course to another other variable you consider important.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks and have a great day!!

I am definitely biased, but IMC is amazing!!!! That said, and of course the timing is good, I've heard some wondeful things about CDA too. Depending how things go, I'm looking at Arizona for '09 and CDA in '10 (doing IMC this year).

Hmm I never 'got' the whole hype around IMC, been there 2x, once as volunteer and once as competitor. It seems a strange town to me. Don't know if it has changed but the only place I have seen so many pawn shops was in Las Vegas.
I'd take IMUSA Lake Placid over that race any day. But then again, I absolutely will not do another event put on by that organization. It is just crazy money for me.
There are a lot of independent, non M dot races as well, very well run.
Are you looking for one in North America? what are you looking for? weather? hills? ocean vs lake? time of year?

Hi!
May I ask how did you get registered for IMAZ 2009??
I thought the would start registration on November during IMAZ 2008. I'm asking because that's the race I want to do in 2009.
Thanks.
And, as for your question, I've heard good things about Cour d'Alene (sp?), And, also Vineman, though is not an "Official" Ironman.

Thanks for the input everyone... I'm glad to know others have their 2010 schedule at least partly planned ;-)
Maui- I volunteered for the April race this year and registered the next morning for the 2009 race. Because it won't be run in April again, they opened reg for the Nov race.

Well here's a question... what do you think the chances are that there will be online reg available for IMAZ '09, since there's basically two in-person opportunities. I don't think it's feasible ($$) to get down there just to register. Unless some amazing people want to house me ;) hehe

I've done Lake Placid, Canada and now CdA. Lake Placid had the best town and overall atmosphere but is hard to get to since there aren't any large airports nearby. The course is double loop so you go through nice populated areas for the whole thing therefore lots of course support. Very tough bike but beautiful.
Canada is great for the scenery and crowd support is good too. Hard to get to as well because of no major airport close by. You have to be there to register the next morning which is a negative. Bike isn't as hard as CdA or LP so that is a plus. But, the bike is a single loop and not spectator friendly. It goes out into the middle of nowhere and is difficult for people to get there to watch and cheer you on.
CdA is probably the easiest to get to and the best place for finding a place to stay. The area is large with lots of hotels in CdA and in the surrounding area. All legs of the race are double loops so very spectator friendly. I don't think the town itself is as nice as the other two.
I'd rank mine purely from a race perspective and not considering travel logistics:
Lake Placid
CdA
Canada

If you want to add IMCA 70.3 to your schedule for next March, you can enter virtually any Mdot, except Hawaii, of course. Stick around for awards and afterwards is a rolldown of all IM's, with not enough people present to take the 50 available slots for every race. You still have to be present, but San Diego in March is pretty nice, even if the water is ccccoooollllllddddd.

Now that is very tempting. My plan right now is to do IMC and see how I feel after that - my first IM. The reason I didn't sign up for CDA yesterday is because I haven't done an IM yet and I want to make sure I'm willing to do another year of this madness haha.
So, can you can wait until August 25th on a definite answer?

I asked that question a couple of years ago, and it produced a very interesting thread!

I decided on IMC. Even though it was the biggest pain to sign up for, I figured if I might only do one, it may as well be a ridiculously cool course and something that I really look forward to.

Cuds, are you planning on trying to register for IMAZ in November? That is what I had in mind too... but I wasn't totally clear if there
would be
registration at that time or what... with the early Spring and late Fall dates for that particular event.

That's a thought I've had. There is no spring IMAZ anymore, only the fall (the two dates were just for this year during the transition to the new date). Online registration is scheduled for the next day - assuming, of course, it doesn't sell out in person which is why I was thinking about going down to register. That said, I'm thinking that Silverman might be a good idea too. I'm not hearing the most wonderful things about IMAZ (not bad, just not great), but I've heard great things about Silverman. I'm not making any decisions until after IMC though. Gotta make sure I wanna make another crazy commitment first.

No takers for IM MOO??? Wisconsin is a great venue. If you are in the midwest, it is easy to get to. I was able to drive so I don't know about flying logistics. The people are friendly and it is well organized. I just finished CdA - would definatley go back. I heard that they had a wait list for volunteers! They were the best of any race I have ever done. Losts of hotels, Spokane is easy to get in and out of...IMAZ was an easy travel place as well.
So any suggestions for non - M-dot Iron distance races? I have some friends thinking about Beach to Battlefield. It is Nov in North Carolina. They predict fast swim times due to the current being at your back...that might be a trip to the east coast!

I've only done LP in 2007 and can definitely recommend it. However, when thinking about doing my next IM, I'm thinking about doing Vineman (probably in 2009). There's something about a small race on a beautiful and challenging course that really attracts me. I enjoyed doing the branded IM race for my first one, but looking for something more low key next time. Lots of great reviews on here about Vineman and an amazing part of the country that I would really like to spend time in.

I found this interactive chart of the NA Sports Ironman events for the bike and run course profiles. You can compare the bike and run courses for CDA, LP (USA), AZ, Wisconsin, Canada and Florida. Click on one or more race names. You can go back and forth between the bike and run courses.

Well I know you said a NA race... but check Ironman Lanzarote. Hot, tropical, cool course and most importantly... due to the whacky international travel prices, at the end of the day is cheaper than Ironman Canada (flight is more expensive, but lodging at the big, nice resort there is CHEAP!!)

I realize this an older thread and a much discussed topic... but no one really mentions
seasonality
in terms of training. I can't be the only one that dreads the thought of training indoors for an early Spring IM! I live in Chicago, so the weather can sometimes be a challenge... and this year it really didn't get nice out until late May/early June.
Does this factor into anyone else's decisions? Or is it strictly course/location/overall race rating?

Seasonality didn't influence my decision but I really understood the impact of it. Since the races I've done happened at the end of June, July and August I found June too soon in the season because we had a lousy spring, August too late as I lost the entire summer to training, and July just right. Left me August to lay in the sun and allowed me to put in the bulk of my training in May/June/early July.
Now, the question is really - which IM are you willing to travel to the year before in order to sign up?

You are absolutely right!
I considered CDA, but picked Canada mainly for this very reason. Where I live, it rains often, till mid-April or so. If I'd signed up for CDA I would have had to do the longest bikes in Feb-May, meaning, IN THE RAIN! Instead I did my heavy biking for Canada in April-July.
Also, the summer solstice is on June 21. That is 2 months out from Canada, right when the rides and the runs are their very longest. Since I do my long run midweek, I *loved* the fact that it was light till 9 pm!
A final consideration around here is that there are more pools open in the summer, and some of them have an extended lap swim. So, I could finish my 3000-4000 yard swim without running up against the end of lap swim time and being kicked out of the pool.
I can't even imagine training in the *winter* for an April race. Ugh.

Well looks like this might be changing? Was it Louisville that isn't having in-person registration this year and only online? Was reading it in the main forum.
