who else hasn't had a vacation?
Can't Post
is there anybody out there who doesn't seem to make it for vacation? we have gone on weekenders once or twice a year, but that is the extent of it, unless there is a connection with work.
last year i went to NY, but of course the trip was collaborated with work.
my husband and i are self employed, it is hard to find the time to go away with one week. also i find myself reluctant to drop several grand on a trip. by the time we pay for a trip, and not make money during the week or so we'd be gone, it could cost us a significant big chunk.
my friends think i'm crazy because we don't "vacation".
maybe it's just not that much of a priority to me.
the years we did vacation, i'll be damned if my husband didn't want to come home early. he gets bored and has a strong desire to work.
i feel we need a little break, maybe a short weekend is better.
but i am curious, are we the exception, and most people vacation once, twice (or more) a year?

I went to Key west for a long B-day weekend in April, did a week at the Outer Banks in N.C. in June and am going to St. Simon's Island (Ga.) next week. I love vacations!

This has always been my biggest bitch about being a self employed chiropractor - no paid vacation leave. In contrast my wife is a teacher and gets her summers off.
You just have to suck it up and take the time off. You'll be far more reproductive when you get back.
When going on vacation I'd get often another chiro in to work while I'm away, but usually there would be problems of some sort or another so I don't bother any more.
The longest amount of time I ever took off was four weeks and I've only done that twice in 26 yrs. There have been some years where I took no vacation, but usually try to take at least a week once a year.
I do compensate by working a 27 hr work week and take Tues/Thurs afternoons off. There's more to life than just work.

It has been over a year since my last...but...we leave to Williamsburg in September for the Patriots triathlon and some well deserved R and R afterwards.

I would prefer a four day weekend about once a month instead of trying to go somewhere for a week to 10 days.

Yeah, I don't vacation much either. If I do go out of town, it may be a 4 day weekend or a race. I definitely can't remember the last time in my working life where I went somewhere for the "typical" vacation for a week. Hell, it might have been never but I've had a real job for only 4 years now. I just do it and I don't like dropping that much money on a trip when I have other financial priorities ahead of a vacation.

Yeah, but then all those kids get in the way of any future vacations! :-)

Ugh, me. People keep telling me that my week in Penticton is vacation... obviously those people don't understand that the week before IMC isn't really "vacation". I'm hoping I can get away to Kona for a few days around IMH since my birthday is also that weekend. Working on this.

I'm taking my first week off next week. We'll go camping for a few days. I'll take another week in October.
I'd like to go someplace different, but really don't want to drop the coin. Maybe when the kids get older.
I'm pretty much burnt, so i need a little break. I've had just about all i can take with other peoples problems at work.

I try to take 3-4 real vacations a year (a long weekend does not count). I always tell more junior people at my firm to take their vacations, no excuses. Life's too short to stick around the house. It's not that I live somewhere lousy (I love Boulder), it's just that I want to see the world. Well, some parts of it at least.

Live to work, work to live
I work ridiculous weeks the weeks that I am working but have a significant amount of time of each year as well.
So most weeks I am working are in the region of 70-80 hours and then I probably have had off 6 weeks from the week before Xmas through Jan, a second week skiing in March, a week at Easter, we're off for 2.5 weeks on the 24th and then another week or so in November.
I simply could not live without vacationing, I love my job and going to school part time but I need the time off and to be honest I never ever switch off between working Monday to Friday; then writing articles, preparing talks and preparing lectures or other work at the weekend.
This year we'll have spent a week in France skiing, a week in Kitzbuhel, a week in Paris (3 days work, 4 days pleasure), on the 24th we are flying to Dubrovnik then traveling back via Split, Zagreb, Venice, Milan, St Moritz, Zermatt, Lausanne, Paris and back to London and then in October I'll go golfing with the boys for a long weekend in Ireland.
The trip from Dubrovnik to Paris is almost all by train including the Glacier Express and 5 days on the Dalmatian coast, nothing is more relaxing than long train journeys with great books living out of a ruck sack.
I can not imagine not taking vacations but we have traveled for weeks each year since we were kids and my parents still travel 5, 6 or 7 weeks a year for pleasure and I suppose some people love and others don't.

Being self-employed, and if vacations are important to you, then you need to "accrue" some pay every week/month to "pay" for your time off. This is the same thing an employer does with its employees. They put aside a little money every payday, so that they can pay you when you take your time off.
As self-employed people, you must get yourself out of this trap, and way of looking at it. This is assuming that you put value into taking a week off from work. Sometimes putting $$ away makes it easier for you to take the time off. I realize you are still missing any revenues for while you are not working, but it helps with the mental rationalization of taking the time off.
Time away from work is very important to me.

Me too. I never feel rested after coming back from a vacation.
Anybody else just lounge around the house for their vacation?

No, in fact that is something that drives me insane how people take time off work and use it to decorate........I can decorate any time I want, weekends, evenings but I can not travel in the evenings or at weekends as much so I feel that using vacation time to do stupid life tasks is silly..........

Me too, though a longer trip can be fun too.
I get 6 weeks vacation each year, so I take it (we lose it if we don't). Just spent 5 days (Sat-Wed) out of town for bike racing and a velodrome camp. It was so worth it and nice to not think about work (except a little bit each morning to check email).

If people want to take time off to do stuff around their house, then that's fine with them. Some of the best vacations for me are when I take off of work and just sit around the house. Well, I get stuff done, but I stay at home, sleep in, put on pants once every 3 days, do outstanding errands around the house, etc. It is a great feeling for me to sit around my house and do that stuff. Even on the weekends, I'm Go!Go!Go! the entire time and don't have much time to actually relax.

If a week away from work to compete in IM isn't a vacation, why do you do it?

Because I want to. But for me a true vacation is a time with complete relaxation and nothing to do. Like said by someone before, I like to laze around and put my pants on maybe every three days or so... if I HAVE to lol
