Re: root canal: the real pain [Marco in BC] [In reply to] Can't Post

When I was a kid I had this hardcore ultra Baptist dentist that would get me wrecked on nitrous. He'd hook me up to that gas tank and I would be totally gone. The dental chair felt like a roller coaster. Man.... those were the days. No music (since that was the devil's work) but all the nitrous I could sniff through that plastic mask. I wonder if I walked into the dentist office with a great big balloon of nitrous like the hippies sell at hippie concerts if the dentist would be cool with that?

I have had three root canals. None of them hurt any more than a cavity drilling. It was more of a weird sensation as the dentist messed around inside the tooth. YMMV.

I agree - the biggest pain is in the wallet. Even with dental insurance it's expensive. I have no problem at all with the pain of the procedure. It's the pain of paying for it that keeps me from going. I don't fault the dentists. It's the ridiculous way dental insurance works and the absurdly low annual limits.

Speaking of nitrous. I had a dentist who would give it to me, put on the headphones, then come back after I was floating to give me the novacaine. I would have difficulty keeping from laughing because images of an old Bill Cosby routine about being in the dentist chair would enter my mind. That was about 25 years ago though, when dental insurance actually was somewhat helpful.

Tri-ing to have fun. Anything else is just a bonus!

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess it is karma as a triathlete to pay a lot of money to endure a bunch of pain, but dental work is not my cup of tea. I prefer currents, chop, rainstorms, hills, headwinds, blisters ...

To make you feel better, my neighbor is a dentist. I is putting 1 kid through college, has 4 others, and owns a BMW 500 series, a Mercedes, and a Porsche SUV. Your money is going to a good cause...
