There is a fair amount of action started about 12hrs ago. Smells like Oct 1956 ,Putin and Medvedev the dynamic duo are just getting started to restructure and clean house old school style(USSR).
This would have not happen if Georgia got into NATO.

Is there any doubt in anyone's minds that it is Putin pulling all the strings on this while not being in the most visible position to take all the flak?

He is very crafty. This all about postioning and getting back the energy corridor ,via straight shot into his friends north yard Iran.
It killed me when GWB said he looked into Putin's eyes, he did not look deep enough and see KGB.

There is very little now that Putin could do that would surprise me. He is right out of the Soviet mold from the 50s, and will do whatever he damn well pleases - regardless of what the West says. They have always been a third-world nation with a first-world military (although the latter is debatable now) and they still haven't shed their old baggage. It is a fascinating thing to watch - but only from afar.

CNN is reporting that the Russians are bombing Tblisi. This is an extremely serious development. It's one thing to invade South Ossetia but it's entirely different to attack the capitol of Georgia. All while Bush sits a few feet from Putin at the opening ceremonies.

What, realistically, can the West do about any of this? An analyst and Georgia expert on NPR today said 2-3 days of this could be tolerated ... A few weeks? That would be bad news, and things could really spiral out of control for all involved ... He also said none of this is surprising, its been building up for years.

Bush cant win at this one no matter what. If we are to fly the Georgean troops back "home" - Putin will see that as an act of war against Russia, if not - then we are weak and selfish for not helping more. No question, Putin decided that in this chess game he was going to move his queen and see if he can not steal some thunder from China and the games....all at a time when world leaders would be in one place at one time...seems to me a bit Hitler'esque.

To start France and Germany dont want Georgia in NATO.Why? fear ,they fear Putin and dont want to upset Russia because they are a major supplier their enegry.
9 former Soviet bloc countries are in NATO and Putin is seeing all his former satellite states going to the "other side"
Maybe France and Germany with thier cowardly ways should turn the clock back to 1955 and revive the Warsaw Pact maybe that will make them comfortable.
