Something similar to this happened to a player when I was in high school in IL. The kid was supposed to play on the outfield that day, but soon before game time the starting pitcher was ill so he was moved to the mound. A line drive shattered a one of his! A rule was soon made that all player's had to kneel along the baseline prior to the start of the game so the ump could come by and tap to make sure a cup was being worn.

I got that beat.

A good friend of mine is the nephew of a former major league manager and the old guy has stories that would make your hair curl. He told us one about a player he had who was a big drinker and was missing pracitice a lot and was showing up with a hangover when he did make it. As punishment he put the player on the 15 day DL and as he had to do in order to make a roster move to bring someone up he had to declare the reason to MLB which was then posted on the media wires.

Herpes outreak.

Tony Conigliaro

On August 18, 1967, the Red Sox were playing the Angels at Fenway Park. Conigliaro, batting against Jack Hamilton, was hit by a pitch on his left cheekbone, and was carried off the field on a stretcher. He sustained a broken cheekbone and severe damage to his left retina. The batting helmet he was wearing did not have the protective ear-flap that has since become standard.
A year and a half later, Conigliaro made a remarkable return, hitting 20 homers with 82 RBI in 141 games, earning Comeback Player of the Year honors. In 1970, he reached career-high numbers in HRs (36) and RBI (116). After a stint with the Angels in 1971, he returned to the Red Sox briefly in 1975, but was forced to retire because his eyesight had been permanently damaged.
