World Cup Thread (SPOILER) Can't Post

The World Cup starts today! Games on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC as well as the HD versions of those channels. 9am, noon and 3pm eastern for most games, as well as replays every night. FSC and ESPN each have a recap show every night. Over a billion people watched the 2002 final on TV and about 30 billion watched the tournament. Easily the biggest sporting event in the world.

Who is your team and who are your picks?

My 8 Group winners are,

Germany, England

Netherlands, Portugal

Czech, Brazil

France, Ukraine

I'm not sure how all the group winners will end up meeting but I'm hoping for a Netherlands/Brazil final.

My pick is an upset with Netherlands winning. A long shot but I love the way they play. They always play to win and not to force a tie and take their chances in the shoot-out. Brazil is the same so they would make for a great final.

Italy and Brazil in the final. Italy avenging their Rose Bowl defeat with the win.

US maybe sneaking out of the first round. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: World Cup Thread [JPL] [In reply to] Can't Post

Even though I'm a huge Italy fan, I don't think they'll make it to the second round. They have consistently underachieved over the last few years. I would love for them and the US to move on to the 2nd round, but I'm not sure.
  • Germany, Ecuador
  • England, Sweden
  • Netherlands, Ivory Coast (this is the 'group of death', IMO)
  • Mexico, Portgual
  • Czech Rep, USA
  • Brazil, Australia
  • France, Switzerland
  • Spain, Ukraine

Re: World Cup Thread [House] [In reply to] Can't Post

couldn't decide if this was worth a new thread or not...
but from watching the germany-costa rica game, a couple things struck me:
-it' seems all the tv stations have the same video feed - i can see the same stuff in english or spanish. you can kind of guess what people are thinking about when they choose what's shown (i.e. showing Kahn after the two CR goals) but there's a wierd relationship btwn the video & the audio...
-the american guys kept criticizing germany for playing an "offsides trap," as if the offsides trap is some obscure trick way of playing defense. I pretty much only know european soccer, and i've only been following it for a few years now, but it seems to me that almost everyone plays defense that way.

as for the original question:
rooting for france, although they've very little chance; i think that portugal, england, and argentina will do well; i'm not convinced that brazil will win, but i'd like to see them go far, just to see them play.

The commentators kept saying how good Germany was doing, scoring 4 goals. BUT, they allowed 2 goals to a very mediocre Costa Rica team. That does not bode well as they move through to the next round. Their back line needs to get their stuff together.

I agree, Playing an offside trap is very common, just that some teams do it better than other. In general, soccer is a relatively new game here in the states, thus there is the emphasis to play "clean" score a lot of goals etc.... As if a 0:0 game could not be a good game. Having said that I would LOVE to see the USA move to the final round.

England got the result but they looked horrible. Beckham was invisible and Lampard and Gerrard looked tired. Joe Cole was the only one looking dangerous. The 'kick it forward and high and let Crouch get it' game plan isn't going to work. The only good thing to come of the match, England, even as bad as they were, still looked better than Sweden. TnT did a heck of job keeping that match in front of them and Hislop was fantastic.

Re: World Cup Thread [ShawnF] [In reply to] Can't Post

The Azzuri are interesting for more than the usual reasons this World Cup. They have finally renounced playing variations of the Northern style "Catenaccio." It means roughly, door bolt. Effectively locking down the pitch, and having a mistake free 90 minutes. No goals but no mistakes either.

Catenaccio plays for a 0-0 tie with "locked down" midfield defense and to win in penalty shots. Due to supreme confidence in the superior goal scoring skills across the team. It's counter intuitive, frustrating and often, against the best teams, a losing strategy.

Then again they have won the World Cup three times and been to the final five times using variations of this strategy.

At any rate they promise to open it up and let all that Italian talent free. If they really do, it should be fun to see what happens. La Bella Giocca?

I always like the stereotyping disappointment when comparing the football/soccer style of Italy and the Netherlands. The Dutch in neon "oranje" playing flat out, everything on the sleeve. The Italians in their Azzuro blue, as conservative as a banker, bent on not making mistakes.

Switched at birth?

Day 3 begins. Take that Iran! Mexico nets two goals in four minutes in the 70s to break a tie. Thanks for playing.

Anybody see Serbia-Holland? The Oranje look strong...

Re: World Cup Thread [House] [In reply to] Can't Post

Just read this quote from one of the serbia-montenegro players: (from http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=370782&cc=5901)

"I don't see any logic starting an opener at the World Cup with such a closed formation." said midfielder Ognjen Koroman. "If we attacked them from the start, we could have scored. We also might have lost by several goals, but at least it wouldn't be in such a cowardly fashion."

speaking as a spectator and not as a partisan, i wish more coaches thought that way.

Re: World Cup Thread [urbanrider] [In reply to] Can't Post

I was so pissed off when the Portugal coach went into a defensive mode after about 50 mins. They attacked a few times in the first few mins of the second half, and then completely backed off. They seemed to go to sleep after the goal, but at least they attacked somewhat.

And what about talking Ronaldo off with a half hour to go?

Re: World Cup Thread [Bluefan75] [In reply to] Can't Post

I think they are playing very conservatively. The last time portugal met angola the scores were 6-1 and 5-0. So I really did not expect them to only win 1-0. Alot of punters would also have lost their money on that match.

Mexico looks real strong, and Holland are contenders together with Argentina. I hope Italy can do well, and England really needs Rooney. Owen does not seem to be in form and i have no idea what ericsson is playing with using Crouch up front. He was totally useless agaisnt Paraguay.

The SoccerRoos just got hosed! Japanese cross and the Aussie keeper gets bumped so he can't get the ball and it goes in. Couldn't be any more clear!

It was great seeing Australia win, they play a very offensive minded game but what's with the name Socceroos?

That's just how they nickname their teams. The HockeyRoos, SoccerRoos. The only different one is the rugby team, the Wallabies.

USA- Czech on right now. Wearing my red, white and blue, flag is flying at my house and it's in HD!
