Windshield Repair or Replace Can't Post

I got a crack in the windshield this past weekend that is about 6 inches long. Do I need to replace it or can it be repaired? Anyone in Chicago have a recommendation for service?

Park your car facing the sun and that crack will split your windshield in two. Get it replaced.

Take it to a place and they will evaluate it and give you your options. Generally, the repair options are 100% covered by insurance (depending on your coverage). There is usually a deductible for the replacement. I would guess that a 6 inch crack probably will warrant a replacement...but I don't know for sure.

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago and was told by the various places that I called that if the crack is larger than a dollar bill, the windshield needed to be replaced.

My parents own a glass shop and I just got off the phone with my mom. Sorry we live on the east side of WA state so no help there. What I can tell you is this: If your crack is in your line of vision you need to have it replaced. If its not then if could possibly be fixed (depends on who you take it too). There is one local place here that has a "system" that can fix cracks that long. Your best bet is to call around. Perhaps even call your insurance company and ask them for suggestions on who to call.
Best of luck.

It's not in my line of vision, but it would be in the passenger side in the lower right corner just above the windshield wiper. My guess is that it will have to be replaced. I was about to call the insurance company to see if I could get some money out of them without causing my premium to go through the roof.

I have had 2 Windstar, one Taurus wagon windshield, and recently a VW Jetta windshield replaced. I have yet to pay a dime and my rates have never gone up as a result. I have had my homeowners insurance, a couple of life insurance policies, and all of my cars through one company in the last 20 years (American Family). No specific rider on the windshield, they are just covered with no deductable. It pays to have comprehensive IMO.

Allstate will only cover a repair, not a full replacement without going against my deductible according to my insurance guy. So being that it needs to be replaced it's kind of a push.
