Why are stupid people so important? Can't Post

I always ask this question at this time of year, why does the media concentrate so much attention on stupid people....by stupid people I mean the undecided voter. This campaign has been going on for 18 months with the candidates constantly on our TVs our newspapers and the internet. We know where they go to church, what they eat for breakfast, where they stand on Georgia, Afganistan, Korea and Venezuela. We know their kids' names, theit favorite teams, and the person who designs theie wives' clothes. We know too much about these guys.

In ths year's presidential campaign the two candidates could not be more different in every regard; they are worlds apart on outlook and policy. The only way you can be undecided at this point is if you have not been paying attention...which makes you stupid, or if you can't tell the difference...which makes you stupid.

So all these stupid people get to sit in focus groups, in town hall audiences, in little CNN debate chat rooms, and their opinions are help up as things of importance or relevance. Gimme a break!

NO MORE STUPID PEOPLE ON TV!!!

Really? You think the only way someone could be undecided about which unimpressive choice they get to pick from for President, is if they're stupid? Quite frankly, I don't think they're any more stupid than the people who made up their minds before hearing anything and have stuck to their guns despite 18 months of crappy campaigning.

6 weeks ago we didn't know who the VP's were much less shit about them. These two candidates are a missed heart beat away from being president. I would think the stupid people have made up their mind not knowing a thing about them.

Let's not forget all 4 of these motherf*ckers are lying to us anyhow, we just need to pick the one who we believe the most or least.

I gotta back my man Matt on this one. Who the hell, at this point in the campaign, is "undecided" anymore? And if so, should they even be allowed near a voting booth without a government-certified I.Q. that approaches room temperature, at least? Good God.

They must all be like that first O.J. Simpson jury. Somewhere, Johnny Cochrane has a smile a mile wide on his face.

"Who the hell, at this point in the campaign, is "undecided" anymore?"

Ummmm, let's see:

1. People who have heard a lot of rhetoric but not much on actual issues so far in this campaign.
2. People who would maybe prefer to vote for Sen McCain if he were the Sen McCain of four years ago, but are having trouble now because he's changed so much.
3. People who might vote for Sen McCain but have a hard time swallowing his embarrassing choice of VP running mate.
4. People who thought they knew who they were voting for up until the last two weeks of economic collapse and the wishy washy behavior of both candidates in response to said crisis.
5. People who don't fall on either the far right or far left of the spectrums and are trying to parse out which candidate matches more of their policy preferences.
6. People who aren't blindly voting down party lines.
7. People who have unanswered questions that they want to hear addressed over the next few weeks and tonight's debate.

Just to name a handful.

I guess I am one of those "stupid people".
I was a McCain supporter in 2000 and until recently I was going to hold my nose and vote for him. I was turned off by the Palin pick and have decided to cast my vote for Bob Barr. Since I live in a strong "red" state (Tennessee), my vote will be a protest vote.
I guess that makes me both stupid and unimportant.

And none of that stuff, apparently (and according to many focus groups and polls), has really moved anybody who's already decided on their candidate back into the "undecided" camp. Most women would say these "undecideds" suffer from a failure to commit ;-)

It's the only time, once every four years, that folks who can't get off the dime get any sort of attention from people. Mostly, they get shoved out of the way at movie theater box offices and fast food restaurant order counters for the same sorts of behaviors they're exhibiting during this silly season (hee-hee).

Sure, the can act like thoughtful, deep thinkers that are torn between two outstanding candidates, carefully measuring each on their positions, unlike us kneejerk hacks that made up our minds 18 months ago.

What should the media be doing differently? I think you right about the undecided people I put them with those who think there is a big difference between the candidates.

Or they are like my wife and are terrified of ordering the wrong thing....this is what happens when I go out to dinner with my wife.

WIFE: Hmmmmmm the ahi tuna or the filet mignon...I dunno...hmmmmmm

ME: Honey, one is fish the other is cow. One comes with fries the other with salad. One is fatty the other lean. C'mon make a decision, I'm hungry.

WIFE: Hmmmmm but they both sound good, and I dunno if the fries here are good, or if they toss the salad beforehand.

ME: Honey, c'mon I'm starving!

WIFE: Hmmmmm waiter, what do you reccommend? what is best?

WAITER: They're both good maam.

WIFE: Hmmmmmmm OK I'll have the tuna.

ME: I'll have the filet mignon.

WIFE: No, no I'll have the filet mignon too.

ME: can we eat now?

WIFE: No, wait the tuna...yes the tuna.

10 minutes later

WIFE: wow that looks like a really nice steak, can I have some?

...have decided to cast my vote for Bob Barr.

While I am not a fan of Bob Barr, I wonder how many of us given the choice of a viable third party candidate would vote for them. That is if this person were allowed to run and debate head to head against the two big parties. If this person existed who had moderate, common sense views on most issues, I would vote for that person. Unfortunately, people like this can't get in the game. Our political system doesn't allow for it.

My wife does that sometimes (can't decide what to order). Then she reaches over and "samples" from my plate after the waiter's dropped off our dinners. Since I'm vegetarian, and she's not, it doesn't happen as often as it does to Matt, but I occasionally get the "stab of the opposite person's fork onto my plate" thing.

I'm sure you've heard that definition of insanity...doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Well if all you have been hearing thus far is rhetoric, don't expect that to change. If your questions have not been answered thus far don't expect that to change. If neither candidate has lit your fire don't expect that to change. The candidates you have are the candidates you got. Time to shit or get off the pot.

I'm not undecided but I'm not pleased with choices were being offered. You answered your own question with the statement that the candidates are worlds apart on outlook and policy. Aside from the millions who just don't give a shit, the undecideds are people who don't exist at the far ends of the political spectrum. The shift of each party toward opposite extremes has made the vast majority of Americans political refugees.

Reminds me of Ronald Reagan saying he didn't leave the Democratic Party, they left him. Except it applies to both parties. The extremism of the leadership, membership, candidates and policies of the two parties alienate the vast majority of Americans. Since the smaller number of decided voters basically cancel each other, each candidate has to make himself appear more moderate than he really is in order to try to convince the less extreme voters that he's their guy. The fundamental problem, IMO, is the current two-party system and weak candidates they continue to crank out. I think that people who give a shit still being undecided today has less to do with their intelligence and more to do with the dissatisfaction with their choices.

Re: Why are stupid people so important? [rufusnafu] [In reply to] Can't Post

Extremeists do not get this far in Presidential politics. Both candidates represent different shades of mainstream thought. They have very different ideas on how to solve our problems but neither of them are radicals. Kucinich and Paul are about as extreme as we allow our Presidential candidates to get and they generally don't get taken very seriously.

Your complaint about the caliber of the candidates holds no water either...at least on the Democratic side. A record 18 million people turned out to vote for Obama in the primary and he needed every one of them because 18 million people also voted for Hillary Clinton. Two very qualified and able and clearly very popular candidates. A black man with the name Barack Hussein Obama cannot get this far if he is weak in any way shape or form. Obama is NOT a weak candidate.

No, this is the "why are stupid people so important (to getting Barack Obama elected ;-)" thread. That VP choice thread is somewhere back in time, on another page.

We (I mean, "me") could agree with that observation. Or not. It's our (and mine and your) choice, Obi Wan.
