Who's Flying Old Glory? Can't Post

I'll be putting mine up today after work. This year I'm rigging up a light so I can display it throughout the night. Who else is doing the same?

* I was etocaj, but now I'm chainpin.

I am so ticked. I had an awesome flag pole. Last year we had a storm towards the end of the summer where we had straight line winds out of the north and it actually bent my flag pole at the ground. It was something to see. I have been looking for another pole, but haven't found one yet that is similar.

I like the light idea. Flags look cool with the lighting at night.

Why wait for a special day.

I fly the Stars and Stripes every day. The only thing that changes for the 4th, Flag day, Veterans Day etc is a couple of banners on the porch.

Flag Poles are cheap......and too few.

Sorry to hear about your flag pole.

$200 can get you a pretty nice pole. I've lost 2 to storms.

I fly mine every day. Plus an Army flag in honor of my son. I used to fly the USMC flag, but when my son deployed I put up the Army flag and have just left it up.

You are right. I was spoiled because my last flagpole I found at a garage sale for $40. It was one piece and 25 feet long. I have considered making one, and that is probably what I will do, unless I find another one in the mean time.

Re: Who's Flying Old Glory? [etocaj] [In reply to] Can't Post

One of the many attactions of my current house is the very large (nearly 30 ft high) flag pole in the side yard area. My 2-story bungalow was built in 1920 and has all the original wood-working, stained glass, and hard wood floors. The flag pole was installed in 1941 and was taken down and re-mounted in 1965. It is simply amazing considering its age. The rope has been replaced a number of times, most recently in 2002 or 2003.

Immediately after moving in, I installed lighting and purchased a very large flag. I retired that one on July 23, 2005, the day my former Army colleague and very close friend was shot down and killed while flying in a helicopter over Iraq. In his memory, I installed a heavy duty one the very next day and vowed to fly it until all my friends came home from the gulf (not in protest, but in honor of their service). Unfortunately, several storms this year have beaten it to hell and I should retire and replace it, but, I just cannot get myself to do so.

Re: Who's Flying Old Glory? [slowbern] [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually you can get them for much less too. I only said $200 because the last one I bought is hinged at the bottom between two upright brackets. It allows you to lay it down if the forcast calls for potential high winds.

Like I said, I lost two to high winds. I don't mind buying them.....it's digging up the concrete the last one was installed in that sucks!

Interesting that you brought this up, I was going to post this question.

I have a flag that has seen better days and need to retire it. How do I do this?

Turn it in to the local Foriegn Vets or American Legion. They will dispose of them properly

A little more info

Quote

My flag is old and ready to be retired. What should I do?
Section 8k of the Flag Code [see below] states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." We recommend that you contact your local VFW Chapter and ask them for help properly disposing of your flag. And be sure to consider providing a small donation to them for their assistance. Or you can contact your local Elks Lodge (who created the idea of Flag Day, established officially by President Truman, himself a member of the Elks), the American Legion, or the Knights of Columbus. Some Boy Scout and Girl Scout troups also can provide this service.
See Flag Burning Service and Ceremony.
In earlier times, most American flags were made of cotton or wool. But today's flags are often nylon or other petroleum-based materials. Burning them can release hazardous gases, including formaldehydes, ammonia, carbon monoxide, and traces of hydrogen cyanide into the air. In some states, it is even illegal to burn nylon, so adhering to the Flag Code puts you in direct violation of the law. Burning is preferred for cotton and wool flags. Nylon and flags made from other synthetics can be buried.
Modern flag retirement ceremonies, often held annually on Flag Day, sometimes feature the symbolic burning of a single flag (cotton or wool) and the burial of the others. This is both safe and respectful

My kids are always commenting on how many American flags we see when we visit the US and how few you see in Canada. Flying the flag is certainly one thing Americans do really well. When we exited the highway on our way to my parents house recently, my kids decided to count flags during the remaining 5 miles of our trip. They counted 135 flags in 5 miles!!

You could give it to the Boy Scouts too. I think the American Legion Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags happens on flag day but I'm not sure.

I second the Boy Scouts. As I think back on the first one I ever participated in, I have to say it left a big impression.

  So true.

I'm from Australia, and I don't recall ever seeing a Godzone flag flying in a private home. Never. In some parts of the US I've been, there are more homes with than without.

The only time I've raised a flag at home it was a US flag, after 9/11 (or 11/9 for the non-Americans). My neighbours thought it was very weird. One still didn't get it even after I explained.

Flying an Australian flag for no good reason would be seen as stranger still. There has recently been an upturn in interest in our flag, however. Xenophobic right wing nutcases have been wrapping themselves in the flag when they go to anti-immigration rallies, or beat-up-on-Muslim brawls. Heartwarming. Flags were banned from Australia's largest outdoor music festival recently, because they had become a 'call to arms' for racist thugs. I don't think that's how it's supposed to work.

Happy 4/7 anyway. Or 7/4, must you if.
