What do you do with old shoes? Can't Post

I have more pairs of shoes, boots, sandals, and sneakers that I don't wear compared to those that I actually do. Many are worn out. Some are not.

What do you do with old shoes? Just toss them in the trash? Any unique ideas for recycling/home use?

While I don't want to simply toss them in the garbage, I am not sure what is best action to take with them.

Has anyone donated to the VVA? I think they take used stuff, but the flyer they put in the mail doesn't specify new or used.

Lots of charities take them. Here's a runner's world article with a few listed. Pick your favorite:

I take the ones that are still decent to the local Goodwill. The ones that are worn out completely go in the trash as my backwards community doesn't have a very strong recycling program.

I have a three tiered system.

1. If the shoes are in good condition, I sell them on eBay. You would not believe what people will pay for used stuff on eBay. I've sold used Rockport dress shoes, slightly worn Mizuno running shoes, and a pair of Salamon approach shoes on eBay.

2. When I'm making a trip into San Francisco, I grab a few pairs of old running shoes and hand them out on Market Street. I also do this with a lot of the corporate logo wear I get. It is funny sometimes when I go back and I see folks along Market wearing my company's logo shirt while panhandling.

3. We have Veteran's groups who pick up clothing and shoe donations at the curbside in our town. We donate a lot of baby clothes and stuff by this route.

Running Room stores in Ottawa collect old running shoes and donate them to Sherperds of Good Hope and other charitable agencies. Some of them might also find their way top various third-world countries, but I think Running Room's priority is local.

As with all my unwanted items, i donate them to the Salvation Army or Goodwill . I then deduct them at inflated prices.

I'm waiting for this to happen to me. Someone in my area must have an entire wardrobe of my corporate logo stuff. It goes to Goodwill as soon as I receive it!

As for shoes; old runners I'll wash then take to Goodwill or St. Vincent dePaul. Work shoes I take to a consignment shop if they're in good shape.

Tie the laces together and throw them over utility lines.

You can mail any brand running shoe to Nike. They recycle them to make playground material for kids to fall on and some other stuff.
Send them here:

JQ, for the running shoes, you can usually drop them off at the Rittenhouse Running Store - forgetting its exact name, but the one on Chestnut, not far from Breakaway Bikes. Worth calling first.
For the others, goodwill what you can.

Local Charity. Why throw something away that somebody less fortunate would be very grateful to have. Even worn out shoes are better than no shoes.
