"This" one and "that one"

Just as McCain learned the art of gutterball campaigning at the tip of Karl Rove's spear, so it seems he learned the art of the referential dismissiveness at the tip of another conservative icon's tongue:
Outside her Bel-Air home,
Nancy Reagan
stood arm in arm with
John McCain
and offered a significant – but less than exuberant – endorsement.
“Ronnie and I always waited until everything was decided, and then we endorsed,”
the Republican matriarch said in March.
“Well, obviously
this
is the nominee of the party.”
They were the only words she would speak during the five-minute photo op.
In a written statement, she described McCain as “a good friend for over 30 years.” But that friendship was strained in the late 1970s by McCain’s decision to divorce his first wife, Carol, who was particularly close to the Reagans, and within weeks marry Cindy Hensley, the young heiress to a lucrative Arizona beer distributorship.
The Reagans rushed to help Carol, finding her a new home in Southern California with the family of Reagan aide Edwin Meese III and a series of political and White House jobs to ease her through that difficult time.

For future reference: "This" is to be used when endorsing a loathsome fellow Republican; "That" is reserved for loathsome Democrats.

Maybe I have more of a tin ear than I thought, but since when did demonstrative pronouns/adjectives acquire a pejorative connotation anyway?

This is about as relevant as parkito's "dirty plane" thread.

Just adding a little historical perspective. I wonder if any of our resident Reaganites picked up on it.

I thought it was taken for granted that McCain and Obama would be dismissive of each other. Isn't it an established rule of politicking that you should try to avoid mentioning your opponent by name? And if one characterizes McCain as another GWB, or Obama as part of the radical fringe, surely those are forms of dismissal too?
I suppose McCain could have referred to Obama as "my most-esteemed colleague," maybe with a little sarcastic emphasis on the word "esteemed." ;)
I can see the dismissiveness, though, in the Lewinsky example that O&H provides.

Well, there's run-o'-the-mill political dismisiveness, and then there's deep-seated animosity. In the case of Mrs. Reagan, she was deeply offended by his treatment of her friend, and made no attempt to hide it in her lackluster endorsement. McCain's enmity for Obama is audible, visible and palpable. A sarcastic "most esteemed colleague" is likely more than he can muster at this point. Hell, he barely even blinks when his supporters call for Obama's traitorous, terrorist head during campaign rallies.
