The worst "start" to the Olympics for an athlete possible Can't Post

http://www.washingtonpost.com/...AR2008080801412.html
Bantamweight Gary Russel passes out while trying to lose the last 1+ lbs for his weight in.

To get THAT close, and have it slip away. I can't fathom what that would feel like.

Quote

By 5 a.m. Russell felt better. But the rush of fluids and food had pushed his weight to 123 pounds. He scrambled, looking for ways to lose the added weight. Then he looked out the window and saw a bus driving away with the boxing team, headed to the weigh-in. He was out of the Olympics.
Officially, he was disqualified for failure to show up for the weigh-in. This fact infuriated him.
"There's going to be a lot of drama and people saying I lost on the scale; that's some [expletive]," he said. "I was willing to put my life on the line to make this happen. I was going to win this tournament. I was going to make sure that everyone back home knew that I had given my best and I gave it my whole effort. I look back at it and know I gave it 110 percent. I've been through [cutting weight] so many times I know the process. This time my body wouldn't do it. I just stood up and then I was looking at the ceiling."

I thought this would be about Hope Solo conceeding two soft goals in the first 4 minutes against Norway.

He wasn't physically ready when he had to be. Sucks, but that's what it is. I find other elements of the story very strange. Like why was he sitting on his mother's lap? How old is he, 8? And why did the author feel the need to tell us his father was dreaming about vampires?

While his son was passed out and missing his Olympic dream, the Dad was dreaming about the son being attacked by vampires. Was clear to me the intent; he was pointing out that it seems like the father and son have a connection.

Every boxer and wrestler (plus I assume many of the rowers and others) are all trying to make weight at this point. So I don't view that as not being ready per se, though I can see that element to it.

Had he been in piss poor conditioning when he boxed and lost, yeah, sucks for you. But when you don't even get to compete, that stinks. It'd be like showing up to your A race, losing your numbers because they fell out of your bag, and not getting to race.

(the lap thing was weird, I couldn't find his age in the article, but no matter the age that was a bit off)

Or that szechuan chicken doesn't agree with his father.

Not making weight is not the same as losing your number. It's not a technicality. If he wants to fight in a particular weight class, he has to be in that weight class. It's more like being dq'd in the U-23 class for being 24.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the analogies :-)

Yes, but Katy's right and you're wrong.

The guy can't figure out how to qualify in his weight class for the Olympics? Sucks, but it's his own stupid fault.

I guess I relent. It doesn't suck to have missed out on his dream, he had it coming...

Digressing back to women's soccer -- a bad start indeed. Solo was late coming out on the cross for the first goal. But the second goal isn't on Solo, it lies on the defender Markgraf for her sloppy pass back and across the middle that gave Wiik a perfect breakaway....

Waaaaaah waaaaaah waaaaaah. What a douche. If you can't make weight without messing up your body you are in the wrong weight division. Man up and move up to the next one.

Not always that easy - there's a British boxer who just pulled out as well because he couldn't make weight. The guy's only 22 and has been increasingly struggling with weight over the last year as his body matures. Moving up a weight wasn't an option as there was another British boxer already qualified in the next weight category.

Solo got her angles wrong too and left her far post exposed.

How about the father & mother in-law of the volleyball coach being attacked - the father in-law has since died. I think that might take the cake. Horrible story.

Have you ever had to cut weight? It is very common to drop those last few ounces prior to weigh in. Just cause the next weight class is heavier it doesn't mean it is tougher. You are only talking about a few pounds difference.

Yes I have cut weight. It sucks. It is debilitating and can be dangerous. It is also unecessary if you compete in the division you belong in.

My sentiments exactly. I've always been baffled why boxers & wrestlers don't just compete in their true weight class. One of the many reasons I wouldn't allow my kids to wrestle because the weight gain & loss antics start in high school, and it's not healthy.

You're kidding, right?

If we were talking about grade school wrestling you would have a point, but at the Olympic level you don't belong in the weight class if you don't cut to get there. With very few exceptions, everybody is cutting to make the weight, and there are going to be athlete's that don't make the cut.

If this were a pro bout, they would simply fight at a catch weight or dope him with diuretics if it was for a belt, but at the Olympics? He goes home in shame, and gets lambasted by armchair boxers...

How about the Korean 200m freestyle champ who got dq'd for a false start in athens. Came back to Bejing and took the gold.
