Stop the madness... Can't Post

How this ever got traction is beyond me....

Speaking to the Washington Post, aide Brian Rogers, in full damage-control mode, acknowledged that his boss had "some investment properties and stuff," but added: "This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison."

Please more nuance.

"This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison."

Is there anything that McCain will ever do that will not refer back to his time in prison?

Does his POW status make you feel uncomfortable? Like, maybe he did the things that most of us know we'd soil our underwear, if we had to undergo or do them?

It was an inartful rejoinder, for sure. No argument there. But Obama criticizing anybody about the number or quality of their lodgings just shows how out of touch he is with reality.

"Inartful"? It was so moronic as to be embarrassing. "Inartful" does not quite cover it.

John McCain was a POW?...man they should start talking that up.

Hadn't heard anything about it until just this instant...but then again if they used the POW line everytime the candidate screwed up, people would begin to think he was using it as a crutch...no best to be really subtle about it like they evidently have been.

Wow. They can't possibly be that desperate yet. Can they? That damage control is almost disgusting.
Meanwhile back at McCain campaign headquarters:
Anonymous Campaign Staffer: "McCain just said he didn't know how many houses he owned. What are we going to do?"
Rove: "Shit! Ok, ok. Let me think. Alright, I got it. Remind them that the longest he ever lived in one place was as a POW during the Vietnam War".

John Hinderaker says it best:

No More Mister Nice Guy

The latest campaign kerfuffle is Obama's effort to make hay out of John McCain's inability to tell a reporter how many houses he owns. McCain mumbled something about condos and said the reporter should talk to his wife. Predictably, Obama is trying to spin this exchange as showing that McCain is "out of touch."

I can relate, though. For example, if a reporter asked me how many ties I own, there's no way I could answer. Just like McCain, I'd tell him he has to ask my wife. Likewise if someone wants to know how many Wii games my kids have.
McCain's campaign, though, took it amiss and struck back hard. Brian Rogers, McCain's spokesman, said:
Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people “cling” to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans? “The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”

Touche, I guess. The truth is that McCain isn't out of touch with "ordinary people" because he's rich, he's out of touch with his own domestic arrangements because he cares little about material things, and for many years has devoted his extraordinary energies not to enjoying his wife's money, but to serving the American people. Given the number of nights he's spent in hotels or on military bases over the last few years, it's no wonder he hasn't seen much of his wife's condos.

More whine to go with that cheese, Mr. Democrat? The Obama camp knows it loses whenever it gets into a comparison of who's better served this country, McCain or The One (Senator O.).

Re: Stop the madness... [parkito] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, this thread started out about McCain, but we can make it about Obama. Or Clinton. Or, any other politician. They are all rich, elitists who have been in politics or Washington too long and are completely out of touch with the rest of us. I really don't care which side you are on, these people could care less about you. I wish most people would realize this.

Re: Stop the madness... [fitzie] [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, this thread started out about McCain

Which was the subject of my reply to you. I just asked that you check the basis for one aspect of the whole story.

No one has even stopped to ask the question if McCain has even been to all the properties in question. He gets dinged for marrying a rich woman as he wasn't a rich man himself. It follows that the properties were/are hers (via inheritance for instance), and may well have been hers before McCain entered the picture. He may have never even seen them, or has stayed a limited number of times. Under those circumstances, is it important for him to remember them all? Does it make him elitist because he doesn't?

It really is a stupid issue. Even MattinSF's constant harping on McCain's age has more weight than this.

these people could care less about you. I wish most people would realize this.

While quite cynical, I would agree that there are politicians who have lost touch and don't care that much about the people that have elected them. The trick is to figure out which ones are which. That's pretty much what we've been doing in the LR for the last 12 months.

Actually, McCain will never get his own balls since Cindy has them locked up in a pre-nuptial agreement that allows her to file separate tax returns that no one can ever see.

You realize that he has been married to Cindy for about two decades, right? You don't think that in that period of time he would have seen everything she owns? Give me a break. That is the worst argument you've ever made on any point. And you've made some really bad ones.

From you, I'll take that as a compliment. The guy doesn't come across as materialistic to me. I find it quite within the realm of reason.

I quite understand if you don't.

Damnit! It's hard keeping up with these arguments on 3 different posts! Anyway, yeah, completely agree. One little detail left out on this matter is that McCain does not actually own any of the 8 homes (yes, it is 8, not 7). None are in his name. And you know what, he probably hasn't had the time to spend a night in more than 1 of them in the last 12 years.
