Slowtwitch Investment Challenge round 2
Can't Post
I decided to start this now even though the old game still has 20 days left. Because I have used this as an educational tool, and I want to learn about the buying and selling of options, I switched to investopedia, which is also free and allows options trading.
Here is the link:
http://simulator.investopedia.com/...73341&PW=slowman
The settings can be changed, and if people want, we can eliminate the options. Thursday, 7 February, is the first day of trading, and it will run for a year. Good luck.

Not sure why the rush.
If I remember or this gets bumped, I will join in 19 days when the other one ends.
But trying to simplify life, so only 1 game at a time for me.

It;s just you as far as I know. I have had no issues. Is realtime updating of standings really that big an issue?
You guys can go back to the old site if you want. I used this one because I wanted to learn about options. The virtual site had lots of issues.

Well, I still have a market trade hanging from 3:20 friday?
What issues did you have on the Virtual site?
I also don't like that I can only put 25% of available funds into one stock (and even then for some odd reason it blocked me till I went to about 20%). The rule is 50% of cash but then you have margin, so in effect it is only 25% of available funds.
Oh well my gains won't be as big this year.

You must not have watched the end of last years game. Real time updating effected the end results.

I did watch the end of that game. It was only a few days and 2 guys that needed real time. On investopedia you can click on the account of interest and see their real time value.
This site mandates some diversification. I didn't like the virtual site where a dude could push all in on a 9 cent gold mining stock and if the thing goes to 14 they win the game. This site is much more realistic, and it allows the trading of options. 2 big pluses in my book.

Hey, get it straight it was a 1 cent gold mining company, thats still at 1 cent. By the way this is not an issue here as this investo does not let you trade stocks under a buck anyhow.
The problem is I ride GM up and Down, can only do that with a smaller pack of money. The site is way slow at loading. And it finally shows my transaction from 3:20 friday. In the meantime I could not do anything with GM cause it had it all locked up.
Oh well, your game, your choice. I was just wondering if it was only me. Sounds like it is I'll play but the site so slow wont be trading or checking to often.
Hey I don't see a Jeremy K on the list of players what id are using?

Is the GM ride a realistic way to manage your money? I liked the virtual game less because of the lack of realism. That might just be me. I am using these games as a way to learn so that I can be a smarter investor of my own money. This specific game, where my id is jlkst87, is not going as well as the last one did, where I think I finished ~7th.
How would you want the rules to be modified?

Well there is the rub. Which money. Is this suppose to represent my entire financial position. Some in Real Estate (My House), some in 401K (mostly Mutual funds following adivce from outside firm) After tax investment in low cost Vanguard funds follow a Lazy portfolio.
IF I were to invest in the market directly it would be money I could afford to lose, and yes I was allways taught invest in what you know. I know the US automarket and in specific GM. Turned almost 50% last year on GM alone.
If we see GM gets to 18 I will probably move 50% of my 401K into it. May move some in earlier. I have done this before with success. Will use the same strategy here though will be more risky cause I will short it also. If I turn 25 or up this year, I may start playing with my own money, but fees kill you when you have less than 10K to play with.
I can live with these rules. The slow website kills me more, and Its not easy to get realtime (well 20min delayed) qoutes for stocks you own. So I monitor in marketwatch. Heck making it a pain to make trades might be better for me as a Panic on the last day cost me winning the game. So now I will only check when I have at least 30min, as apposed to the 5min I use to.
Thats yo down 20 some percent (OUCH) IAMIKE better get working if he wants to retain his title at the bottom.

I aint the smarterest guy out there... but that sounds to me like about a 22ish% drop from where it closed today, a hair over $23. What kind of drubbing does the overall market have to take in order to see GM drop like that? What is your 401k in now?
I might be in last place in this game, but I have no pride here. I am trying to learn and I really have in only a few weeks.

I have not been following them lately. Well I looked yesterday, after deciding I needed another stock to play in this game. Put in an order for $6.10. Ford has issues and not sure how much upside it really has, this is going to be rough year, and they don't seem to have much in the way Hybrids, $$ or new product. Ok, now I am wondering why I have that buy order in I guess cause they are sitting so low.
I am surprised the American Axel strike has not hit GM stock hard yet. I guess cause they have a large inventory of trucks, but if that strike goes on much more than another week or so, look out, GM wont have what few trucks people might buy.

MIssed this post, GM and I assume other stocks if watched closely don't follow the overall market closely GM is down 20% the past month the Dow about 4%. In the past year GM down about 20% the market even. Go look at some charts. Gm swings much more than the market.
As I said above if the American Axel strike keeps going. GM has already closed several truck plants, but has a good inventory so for now this just brings down the inventory, the strike goes on and on... LOOK OUT. Typically the best time to buy.
Now it may not get their, this maybe the bottom, but I don't see much positive news coming just a bad year, so it may also be a slow slide down. I also don't expect much out of the market this year. Oh I moved most of my 401K into bond (about 70-80%) funds in Feb. It was down 7.5% for the year at that point now its only down 6.1%.

Hey. That wasn't very nice. Accurate, though.
I'm kind of like you. The new site is waaaaay toooooooo sloooooooooooow. Therefore, I just haven't done much trading at all. And I haven't been on the site since I bought a few stocks last week.
