Should I take new job?
Can't Post
The attmoshpere at my current company has not been great - not help by a lack of pay rises this year. I am on a low wage for the job I do, but have kind of stuck at it as it has been convient for my training etc whilst I have been a sports bum.
I have decided that its time to use some of my competitiveness to look for a new job. I have had a number of interviews, but nothing has come up until this week when I have been offer a position. Unfortunatley it is £800 less than my current salery and will require more travel not great combined with rising UK inflation. I was hoping if the wage offer was reseanable I could rent a flat nearer as its rather embarasing having to live back with my folks even if it does allow me to fund my triathloning. The position is for an EDI support technition for an insurance underwritering company. There take is that it is maximum they can offer to someone with not experience of insurance or EDI's (I am currently a specifications writter for a Market research company - write code in 2 specific market research programs to make questionnaire run on our computer system and create tables afterwards).
There trying to sell the roll that it can possibly lead to other positions etc (those they didn't really answer what these could be) whilst my current position has 4 other people above me (one director is a director) most have been there 15+yrs and are unlikely to move. I ask what I could expect the salery to rise to in a couple of years but they wouldn't answer.
The question is should I risk moving and just end up in the same position but slightly lower down the ladder than I am now? Do I take the cut and the risk as my current job is leading no where anyway? Or should I stay and continue to look for alternative employment with a high salery & maybe look to do some home study such as a masters degree?
I know in the end its my choice but it is really doing me head in as I have until monday to decide and I seem to change my mind every 5 minutes!!

Keep looking,
if you are questioning a new job this much, then it's not worth it
IMO, a new job had better be worth the hassle.

As you say, it's your decision, but the new job doesn't seem to solve any of the problems you have with your current job. Doesn't sound like there's any more chance of advancement, realistically, and the pay is actually worse. Since the low pay is what you don't like about your current job . . .
I'd stay where you are for now and keep looking. Just the fact that they're trying to sell you on the idea that the job could lead to other positions, but won't identify what those positions are, and won't say that you could expect the pay to increase over several years, raises a bunch of red flags to me.

Stay until you find something that excites you and is worth the hassle.

hmmm...let me get this straight.
you're not happy because of lack of developmental opportunity and tough circumstances in your job. plus no pay raise.
so, you want to swap that out for LESS MONEY, to go LIVE AT HOME WITH YOUR PARENTS, in a job where THE FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN.
sounds like a great job. LOL. BRAHAHAHAHAHA!
seriously. get real. you will hate it and want to quit in 2 months. keep looking, you don't have to take the first piece of shit gig that comes along. if you're going for a shity gig, you might as well make more money at it.
insurance sucks. go work for dunhummby, TNS, Ipsos or something where you can make a shitpile of jack for being a programmer/research analyst. there is no reason why you shouldn't have a good research job. have you called Synovate or any of the above companies? come on now...
on another point, if they're only giving you until Monday, then this tells me handsomely what kind of climate you'd be in. if a headhunter is trying to make you decide, then screw them. a headhunter should know better than to stick you in an uncertain job with LOWER PAY. if it is the company trying to push you to decide my Monday, then run like hell, that tells me all about their culture and why you wouldn't want to be in it.
keep looking. you've only just begun. BE PATIENT, or you'll wind up in another worse situation quicker than you can say "what the hell have i done". seriously. just settle down, and look for a GOOD JOB, not one that will force you to live at home and have a seriously deader than dead end deal.
JUST SAY NO.

Thanks for the advice - Currently stuck at home:-( - though being a farm quite usful for training runs etc. Must admit I think my need to get out of current gradually deteriating work environment & a few other things personal things have kind of made me consider it more than I should have. I should put more worth on myself,I think it is time I used some of my sporting competitiveness into the working world.
Have looked at joining other research companies and this may end up being my ownly option but I really would rather not have to work or have a long comute to London where all these agencies are loccated. If I bit the bulet and more north to London Synovate would probably be my best option as I have a freind who worked there and said they really value there spec writers.
