Hey. You've got your search skills going. Weren't there a bunch of people calling for that Louisiana congress-critter to be expelled or something when he was only under investigation? Wouldn't those guys be calling for similar action against Stevens since he is way beyond investigation and into indictment?

Pshaw. Lying to investigators. They couldn't get him on any real charges, so they resorted to perjury traps. Just like Libby: no crime, so they trapped him. But not like Clinton. Oh, no, not at all like Clinton.

The link in the OP makes it sound like more serious charges than "just" lying. It was failure to disclose, among other things. 7 total charges.

Senator Stevens has been named, for quite a while, involving alleged favors (of some value) he received from the head of an oil field services company located in Alaska. Steven's is the biggest fish, but already three or four "little fishes" (State senators or reps) have been tried and found guilty. For the guts of the deal, check out www.adn.com (local newspaper and search on Bill Allen or VECO).

Yeah, I saw that afterwards. I needed to take the opportunity to forestall the counter-argument in support of the honorable service Sen. Stevens has provided our country.

They missed Larry Craig...I guess because he pleaded guilty an indictment wasn't necessary.

That is what you get for trying to cooperate. I guess he is too arrogant to have learned to keep his mouth shut. After Libby and Martha Stewart, you would think he would know.

I guess this is hypocritical, but that guy is so bad, like Spitzer, I am happy to see his career ended even if it is for BS charges.

Looks to me like Stevens is being indicted for exactly the same offense John McCain was censured for by the Senate Ethics Committee; that being trading votes and influence for plane rides, vacations and campaign donations.

Whats the statute of limitations on an offense like this anyway? can we get that Alaska grand jury down to Arizona for a few weeks?

I don't know the details of McCain's transgressions, but it looks like Stevens took it to a whole new level, as in wholesale bribery. When somebody renovates your house for free and gives you free shit in return for favorable legislation, and you conveniently forget to disclose these illegal arrangements, its pretty clear that you're a crook.

That statement is just, plain scary. The end justifies the means. Remind me (and everyone else who believes in justice) if you are ever on our jury.

Yeah, thus my self indictment of being hypocritical.

Sorry. Guys like Ted Stevens have seriously damaged the Republican Party and thus our political system. I get pissed about stuff like that.

Re: Senator Ted Stevens (AK) indicted [trio_jeepy] [In reply to] Can't Post

Mccain took a lot of free shit like vacations on a private island from Charles Keating and didn't report it....then he blamed his wife who was supposed to take care of that paperwork stuff for him. He got slapped on the wrist, but he could have just as easily been indicted. Did he learn anything from that misdeed? not a damn thing

He subsequently flew around on the Paxson Corporation's private jet to parties and fundraisers with their lobbyist Vicky Iseman and he took $20,000 from them, and in 1999 wrote a letter to the FCC Chair William Kennard asking him to appove a highly controversial Paxson TV station acquisituion, a letter that Mr. Kennard described as "highly unusual".

So McCain's duck walks and quacks just the same as Stevens'.

I understood your self-indictment. It's still scary!

We'll see where the charges end up. The story that has been out there for quite some time was that he "paid all the invoices he was presented". I'm guessing he's not morally clean, but will there be enough to convict, we'll see.

Since we're on the subject, does anyone know what the status of the prosecution of Tom DeLay is? I know some charges were dropped, but not all of them. Are the remaining charges ever going to be prosecuted?

Re: Senator Ted Stevens (AK) indicted [MattinSF] [In reply to] Can't Post

McCain has much better PR than Stevens. I don't think Stevens is going to get too much sympathy after his bridge to nowhere fiasco. McCain, on the other hand, can say pretty much anything stupid and it gets translated into something intelligent, no matter how garbled it is.

Personally, I'm thinking of calling him Sen. "Cleanup in Aisle 5" at this point.

There were three counts brought against Tom Delay. The count of conspiracy to violate election law was dismissed by the State of Texas lower courts and was upheld by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals by a rule of 5-4 on June 27, 2007. However, Delay is still facing a criminal trial for the counts of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. I couldn't find any other updates.

Re: Senator Ted Stevens (AK) indicted [trio_jeepy] [In reply to] Can't Post

Not to hijack the thread here ...

The "bridge to nowhere" was actually a bridge connecting a community to it's airport. Currently, residents can only get there by boat/ferry which, occasionally cannot run, due to high seas, maintenance, etc. By US standards, the community is small (tiny), but by Alaskan standards, it is the fifth largest city in the state. Also, other than to take a ferry ride to the neighboring communities of Sitka or Juneau, there is no other option for air travel from the community.

I personally did not support the Gravina Island bridge, as the $100M to build it seemed excessive (plus another $50M for an access road, plus some $$ for short term operating funds). It is, however, one of those "catch phrase projects" that everybody jumps on and drones on about. Is it the federal government's job to provide infrastructure (road, rail, power-ala the old REA/RUS)? I think historically, it has been.

Short version of the story, the "bridge to nowhere" rhetoric was/is overplayed, for political expediency. The ironic thing is one of the biggest perpetrators of the "slogan-izing" of the Gravina Island bridge was John McCain.

Re: Senator Ted Stevens (AK) indicted [epsdan] [In reply to] Can't Post

Your point is well taken. I think the issue is that, if I recall correctly it might've been cheaper just to pay them to move rather than spend $100mm+ to build the damn bridge. I think if you combine that with Stevens' reputation for bringing the pork home, he boxed himself in a bit.
