Robert Novak has a brain tumor Can't Post

I know some of us like to have fun with journalists on the far right and left, but this is really bad news. Robert Novak has a brain tumor. I wish him and his family the best.

Maybe that's why he ran down an old man in a cross walk last week. Oh, and then drove off. Yea for lawyers on bikes!

Syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak was cited by police after he hit a pedestrian with his black Corvette in downtown Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning.

A Politico reporter saw Novak in the front of a police car with a citation in his hand; a WJLA-TV crew and reporter saw Novak as well.

The pedestrian, a 66-year-old man who was not further identified by authorities, was treated at George Washington University Hospital for minor injuries, according to D.C. Fire and EMS. Novak was later released by police and drove away from the scene.

“I didn’t know I hit him. ... I feel terrible,” a shaken Novak told reporters from Politico and WJLA as he was returning to his car. "He's not dead, that's the main thing." Novak said he was a block away from 18th and K streets Northwest, where the accident occurred, when a bicyclist stopped him and said he had hit someone. He said he was cited for failing to yield the right of way.

The bicyclist was David Bono, a partner at Harkins Cunningham, who was on his usual bike commute to work at 1700 K St. N.W. when he witnessed the accident.

As he traveled east on K Street, crossing 18th, Bono said "a black Corvette convertible with top closed plows into the guy. The guy is sort of splayed into the windshield.”

Bono said that the pedestrian, who was crossing the street on a "Walk" signal and was in the crosswalk, rolled off the windshield and that Novak then made a right into the service lane of K Street. “This car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you just can’t hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.

He said he chased Novak half a block down K Street, finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block it and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blaring, until commuters behind Novak backed up so he could pull over.

Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.” He said he vaguely recognized the longtime political reporter and columnist as a news personality but could not precisely place him.

Finally, Bono said, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He quoted Novak as responding: “I didn’t see him there.”

A concierge at 1700 K Street said that she saw a bicyclist yelling and walked outside to see what the commotion was about.

"This guy hit somebody and he won't stop so I'm going to stay here until the police come," Aleta Petty quoted Bono as saying, as he stood in K Street, blocking traffic.

D.C. police confirmed that there was an accident at 18th and K streets NW at approximately 10 a.m. involving a black Corvette convertible and that the driver was a white male.

The intersection is in the hub of Washington’s business district and is filled with pedestrians who work in the law firms and lobby shops that line the corridor.

Novak, 77, has earned a reputation around the capital as an aggressive driver, easily identified in his convertible sports car.

In 2001, he cursed at a pedestrian on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th streets Northwest for allegedly jaywalking.

“’Learn to read the signs, [bodily orifice]!’ Novak snapped before speeding away,” according to an item in The Washington Post’s Reliable Source column.

Novak explained to the paper: "He was crossing on the red light. I really hate jaywalkers. I despise them. Since I don't run the country, all I can do is yell at 'em. The other option is to run 'em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that."

Two years later, the same column reported that Novak had gone to a racing school in Florida.

"I've wanted to be a racecar driver all my life, and anyone who has watched me drive can tell you that,” Novak said.

It's possible, depending on the location of the tumor. My mom had a benign tumor, and would spend hours driving around, unable to find her way home. She was really unaware of what was going on, and could not remember where she had driven. Doctors diagnosed the problem, the tumor was removed, and she has been fine for over 15 years. I hope that all goes well for Mr. Novak.

The same sort of thing happened to my uncle. His son recognized his difficulties during a visit. They got the problem diagnosed. Sadly, the final result was not so good.

I wish I could say that the hatred displayed toward the man on these pages in recent days is shocking.

if this was, oh, michael moore, let us say, instead of robert novak, what you'd be talking about is the coincidental timing between his fleeing the scene of a hit and run, and his announcement of the brain tumor.

but, because it's a right wing commentator, you're employing your tired but predictable tactic of faux outrage.

i hope, as do you, for the best for robert novak. i don't much care for his journalism, and the reports of his driving habits do not inspire one with admiration. but i do find him an often delightful tv personality, and i don't think anybody here wishes him ill health.

I am sure a lawyer will catch this, but the witness said he hit a pedestrian...so how did Novak know it was a "him" he hit?

I don't see any faux outrage, just confirmation of the hate too often expressed here.

You might want to lookup my comments about Kennedy and his brain tumor before you berate me. As I recall, his driving record is a bit worse, and he didn't have a brain tumor to explain it.

In reference to the news of Kennedy's brain tumor, I posted:

Man, that sucks. I have only known two or three people that went down the brain tumor path, and it didn't turn out well for any of them. Hopefully that experience isn't representative of the condition. ajfranke 5/20/2008

By contrast, we get this for Novak:

Right, because having a brain tumor gives you free reign to run people over.

It's all too common that people treat driving as a right and keep at it even as they realize that they're having difficulties. This doesn't just apply to prople with brain tumors, it also applies to old people. Like you.

I don't hate Novak and nowhere did I write anything to that effect, however I don't much care for him or his driving record and see no reason to change that view because he has a brain tumor. The person he mowed down is rather more deserving of our sympathies in my view.

I don't hate Novak

Well, you sure could have fooled me. Maybe it isn't Novak, maybe it is just old people. God willing, I hope you are able to join that club one day. Maybe you will learn that disabilities sneak up on you very gradually so that you don't even realize it. Maybe you will also learn a little tolerance.

Apparently that's not too difficult.

I hate to break up your hand holding session, but getting back to that other point: Do you really not think that Novak is due a little understanding for hitting a pedestrian? You know, given his brain tumor and all?

A little. Not stopping at a red light, hitting a pedestrian, failing to stop depsite said pedestrian being sprawled across his windshield, fleeing the scene despite repeated attempts to stop him by witnesses...this exceeds the "little" he gets from me.

Re: Robert Novak has a brain tumor [Lazy Ben] [In reply to] Can't Post

Huh. You do need a lecture from someone. I'll settle for passing on a snippet of info from one of the reports:

Dr. Lynne Taylor, a neuro-oncologist at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, said residents at the hospital are taught to check for brain tumors in patients who report having a recent car accident in which they didn't realize they struck something.
"People get spatial and visual neglect of a certain part of their bodies and they don't realize they've done what they've done," said Taylor, a fellow with the American Academy of Neurology.

I don't expect that'll change your mind. Do carry on being an ass.

Correct. If you read pretty much any of the reporting on the incident including the one posted near the top of this thread it seems likely that Novak realized he'd hit the guy at some point and decided to try and make good his escape anyway. That's reprehensible whether you have a brain tumor or not.

If he'd just struck a glancing blow to a parked car I might be inclined to believe he didn't know. This incident was not over in a second and he seemed to know what had happened immediately afterwards.
