Reparations...Yes or No

Looks like the issue will be hot in the near future. Not sure of the value of anything more than public recognition, at this point. Thoughts...Saltman...BarryP? :)

Obama notes ‘tragic’ US past American history's "sad" aspects require action, the senator tells cheering journalists »
$2,300 ticket for Aug. 12 fundraiser

CHICAGO » Sen. Barack Obama, speaking to a gathering of minority journalists yesterday, stopped short of endorsing an official U.S. apology to American Indians but said the country should acknowledge its history of poor treatment of certain ethnic groups.
"There's no doubt that when it comes to our treatment of Native Americans as well as other persons of color in this country, we've got some very sad and difficult things to account for," Obama told hundreds of attendees of UNITY '08, a convention of four minority journalism associations.
The Hawaii-born senator, who has told local reporters that he supports the federal recognition bill for native Hawaiians drafted by U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, noted other ethnic groups but did not mention native Hawaiians when answering a question about his thoughts on a formal U.S. apology to American Indians.
"I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged," the Democratic presidential hopeful said.
"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds."
Obama, who appeared tired in his first major appearance since returning Saturday from a 10-day trip abroad, met with a receptive audience at the Chicago convention. Some journalists had waited three hours for the 40-minute appearance.
The group had expected Obama and Sen. John McCain to speak on Thursday night, but because of scheduling conflicts, only Obama could attend yesterday morning's talk.
When Obama walked on stage at the McCormick Center, many journalists in the audience leapt to their feet and applauded enthusiastically after being told not to do so. During a two-minute break halfway through the event, which was broadcast live on CNN, journalists ran to the stage to snap photos of Obama.
The Illinois senator talked about his trip overseas, reiterating his opinion that violence is down in Iraq but worsening in Afghanistan. And he expressed his approval of the Senate's passage of a major housing bill to help homeowners avert foreclosure.
Obama, who acknowledged that he needed a nap, stood up to say farewell to the audience of journalists, many of whom gave him another standing ovation.

Really? Considering this is the first I've heard of it and that Obama, more or less, gave a non-answer, it doesn't appear that way to me.
As for my opinion on "reparations" meaning specificaly paying money to someone of a particular ethnic group because of what happened in the past, no, I don't support that.
A holiday or monument representing a struggle.....pehaps, but it would depend on what it was. I think more multi-cultural monuments representing native american and black heroes in DC wouldn't be a bad idea.
Giving more opportunity to impoverished neighborhoods regardless of color, though this would, in theory, help correct the racial imbalances.....I'd support that. But I don't see that as a "reparation" but rather attacking a problem that currently exists.
That's my 2 cents, anyway.

ABSOLUTELY YES!!!!!
Every single living former slave should receive reparations for what they personally endured.

Well, Obama's "not just words, but deeds", comment allows for an audience to read in whatever they want, but I guess that type of non-answer is a politician's job. Given that his audience was minorities, I figured they were hearing , yes to reparations. I expect black/white themes to play a bigger role in daily politics with Obama in, probably because I live in the Atl metro area and see it continually here.

I am white. My sister is white. My sister's son (my nephew and god-son) is 1/2 African-American, his father being African-American and no longer in the picture. My parents and I have offered considerable financial support to assist my single-parent sister in raising her child.
Where would my nephew fit in and and who would provide reparations to my nephew for all the wrongs inflicted upon him by white people?

His father was Kenyan and not descended from an American slave.

This has been a huge issue in Detroit for a number of years. Representative John Conyers is a major "playa" in this venue. I have been hearing about it since the early 1990's.

Didn't Dave Chappelle do a skit on reparations... I think it went something like - 3 days after the checks went out, "Tron" had all the money. Probably on youtube somewhere but I can't ge to it from work.

I too demand reparations: first, from England, for all the harm caused to my Irish ancestors; Second, from Germany, for all of the damage caused to my Polish ancesters; Third: from the Scandinavians, for all of the damage caused to my Celtic ancestors.
Only when I receive those reparations will I be in a position to help those who were slaves 140 years ago in this country. And don't forget the indentured servants who also helped forge this country.

rgr195, that was one of his best skits too. When Chapelle was playing the white news anchor reporting how crime dropped to zero after the checks went out, then said "What did the Mexicans get a check too", i nearly pissed myself.

Au contraire, mon ami.
"Everyone has to make reparations to the American Indians," he said.
"We took their country and we're still not paying any rent. It's a tricky thing but certainly what's going on in any reservation – Indians are still in really bad shape."
WTF?

I think reparations were already paid for in the blood of the soldiers of the north and south.
51,000 in the battle of Gettysbrg
34,000 Chickamauga
30,000 Chancellorsville
27,000 Spotsylvania
etc.
But I am sure that is not relevant.
Is anyone suing the african tribes that kidnapped the people who were brought here as slaves? The decendants of the Dahomey and Ashanti empires? The European and arabic slavetraders?
My reparation plan: For anyone who can trace their ancestry to a slave, a one time offer of a one-way ticket to any country in Africa that will accept them, combined with surrender of US citizenship, except you can keep any accrued social security benefits, if the system is not broke, which it already is.

I'd like to see a formal apology first, the kind done in Canada(or about to be?), New Zealand, and Australia. I'm not at all sure about reparations and would like to hear a debate on the matter with the AA community first. I doubt, on the whole, that throwing money on the issue, especially giving it directly to individuals, will do anything for anyone.

The african american father of your white sisters child is not in the picture anymore? And your family has to financially support her? Holy heck, that's a shocker! That almost never happens in the black community.

Already been done for American Indians, and Japanese for WWII wrongs (along with some monetary reparations). I'm pretty much where you are on this. It is pretty odd to though, that there is a push for a formal apology now, just when it looks like we may get a black looking president. I'm not sure whether they are trying to pave the way and defuse an issue for the man, or take away an issue from him that he may want to push farther than they are comfortable with. Sorry, ever the cynic when it comes to these guys.
