Puppy pjorn Can't Post

Okay, so I just had to share pics of my latest foster pup - in the pics the woman who brought him by is holding up a biscuit, which he's staring at very intently. He's your typical 6-month old puppy, in that gangly, goofy, gamboling stage. Was found as a stray and brought to Animal Control in Chicago, and the Doberman rescue group I volunteer for arranged to spring him. He didn't have a name when he came in, so I named him Kona - yes, I know, a total cliche, but the people who adopt them usually rename them anyway, and I needed to call him something other than Puppykins!

Feed him!

Are you going to run with him?

We had one when I was a little boy. Very protective of the family. Never bit any of us.*

What a cutie! How is he going up for adoption? I may know someone (not me, I just picked dog #4 off the road on the way home from Kansas) who may be interested.

LOL, I know, he's a little skinny! He already got some peanut butter in a Kong, so he's on his way to putting on some weight. And I'm going to attempt to run with him - he certainly is a very extreme bundle of energy! I need to do something so he doesn't bounce off the walls.

I had a Dobe myself until he passed away last year at the age of 13.5. I'm still not ready to get another dog, not sure if I ever will, but I foster them in the meantime. Dobes are such great dogs - my boy too never bit or nipped at ANYONE......though with his 95 pounds, people still crossed the street when they saw us walking along. :-)

He looks like a great dog. Do you have kids to socialize the pup with? I need a new dog soon, how long will you host Kona?

Ah yes, your Kansas pooch. What did you decide to name him? That was such a great story!

And we just picked him up today so he still needs to go to the vet for his shots, and then he'll be posted on the group's website: http://www.ildoberescue.com/displayDogs.php If your friend's interested, have him/her fill out an application and then once they're approved they can talk to the foster parents and find a dog that's right for them. The pups usually go pretty quickly once they're posted, so that why we always suggest people get approved first, even if there's no particular dog they want at the moment. Then when a dog does come up that they're interested in, they can move on it quickly. :-)

Thank you for the info. I have passed it along.

We kept the little stray and named her "Kansas." She is getting along quite will with the other 3 and is started to "get it" that she is home. Lots of tail wagging during the last week. She is just starting to fill out and her color is coming in like you wouldn't believe. I will post an update with pictures soon.

I know you'll fatten him up.

I got a call about an 80 year old woman who bought a standard poodle pup, and it is a bit much for her. She is looking for a home, but it can't be "anybody". I lost one in January, and my other one appears to have a liver problem (I'll find out tomorrow). I am tempted, but if my Ellie is sick I don't want her to have to contend with a pup. God, I love doggies, preferbly bigger type doggies, than little doggies-I just relate better.

That's great - definitely post an update! It's so awesome when one takes in dogs that have been lost/stray/treated poorly and they slowly figure out they don't need to worry about any of that stuff anymore, and can just be dogs. I always laugh the first time they do something "naughty," like steal some food off the counter - even though they shouldn't, but at least they're comfortable enough to try it because they know they won't be beaten for it.

You were definitely the best thing to happen to little Kansas!

I have no kids, but when I have fosters I always make sure they're around every kind of situation so we know as much as possible about their character. So he'll be around other dogs, cats, kids, men, etc. The gamut. As for fostering, I'm not sure. Depends how his visit to the vet goes when we get him in there next week - though I'm sure everything will be fine. Once he goes up on the website, it's impossible to tell how long he'll be available......

Ugh, I hope your Ellie is okay. :-( I can relate - when my Hudson was getting up there in years, he was still active, but got easily annoyed by overly rambunctious dogs. And most pups are the very definition of rambunctious.....

I too am a fan of big dogs! Though min-pins always amuse me, since they seem to me like the Shrinky Dink version of "regular" dobermans.

The little guy is now sleeping like an angel. Ha, I should enjoy it while it lasts. :-)

How can you part with a doggie after he has snuggled you and looked at you with his big brown eyes, thanking you for giving him food and water and a wonderful place to live?

I hear ya. I thought about doing foster dog care but figured I would never be able to let any of them go, even if I knew they were going to good home. I greatly admire those who are able to do so.

Hmm, good question. I probably would have kept my first foster, Jennings, since he would have been VERY hard to adopt out (natural ears and tail, and everyone wants the "classic" looking cropped and docked Dobes), and he was older and was scared of everything outside of the house, since he had lived chained up in a backyard in KY his whole life. But was also the sweetest goofball. Unfortunately he also had SEVERE separation anxiety, so he went to another volunteer's home who had other dogs, and did better with that.

My last foster, Gary, I also fell in love with - but he really adored men so I figured he'd be happier in a 2-person household.

Otherwise - tough to say. My Hudson was quite a character, my heart and soul, really, and after him, well, it's just not the same. I love my foster babies, but at least I get to meet the potential adopters and so I know they're going to good homes. Probably deep down I'd feel disloyal if I got another dog. Shrug. Maybe someday.

Re: Puppy pjorn [Monk] [In reply to] Can't Post

Ahem, okay, well, so much for my lofty pronouncement. The little guy has managed to work his way into my heart, so I'm keeping him. I don't know if it was when he poked his head around the curtain when I was taking a shower so he could lick my shin, or when he climbs up on my chair behind me and props his little head on my shoulder........but he's definitely let it be known that he's a keeper.

Based on how he made himself at home early on, I think he knew this was coming:

(btw, that's sunlight on his back leg, not odd coloring)

What a frickin' cutie he is!

My wife and I do Great Dane rescue (we're a foster home for the local rescue group) and as a result, now share our house with 4 dogs, 4 cats, and a bird. Enjoy him - he looks super sweet!

Yay!! Dogs find their people. I used to volunteer at a cat shelter as an adoption counsilor and I swear I would see love at first sight. Eyes would meet across the room and the people would be taking their new friend home an hour later without even meeting any of the other cats.

Congratulations on finding your new best friend!

That's exactly why I'm hesitant to be a foster home. I could see my house with 15 dogs.....

We just adopted a retired 4 yr. old greyhound, and when we went to the "meet & greet," I thought we'd end up adopting all of them.

Your new pup is a cutie. Hope you enjoy many wonderful years with him.

Re: Puppy pjorn [geekysteve] [In reply to] Can't Post

He is indeed wonderful - loves people, other dogs, kids, etc. Gentle as a lamb. Puppy-like exuberance at times, but also chills out quite nicely. Perfect little co-pilot in a car. In other words, he's perfect. :-)

And I can see how you wound up with so many pets - I think it's a slippery slope! Ah well, life is rather boring without these little guys to keep us company.

Btw, Great Danes are so awesome. A close friend of mine has had a couple, and they were the BEST dogs. All bark, until they came galumphing along to plunk their big head on your shoulder.....

Loves it! :) I wish I could have dogs. It occurs to me more and more with each passing day that I need to be in a "career" dealing with animals, whether it's working at a "zoo", or K9 security, or rescue shelters. Anything. I loves the animals!!!

Somehow I had a feeling you'd be keeping him ;)

I loves the animals too! I think it would kill me to work in, say, a shelter, to see all the dogs there and wanting to take them all home. And hearing people's stupid excuses - I went to Chicago Animal Control yesterday to pick up a Dobe to transport him to one of our volunteers, and the poor guy was totally freaked out, had been given up because the people were moving (lots of states don't take dogs, apparently!) - and while I was there, 2 women were giving up this little chihuahua because "it pees inside." Great, just great.

And, i think everyone else knew before I did that I'd be keeping the little guy. :-) Here he is contemplating which part of his bear he should chew next:

Re: Puppy pjorn [cuds] [In reply to] Can't Post

My dream is to have a no-kill shelter for older animals that have a hard time being adopted from other shelters. I also want a big barn for ferel kitties that would allow me to provide medical care and get them fixed so no more kittens while providing a safe place for them to live. Adults are very hard to socialize so I want them to be safe if they are outdoor kitties.

This is something I absolutely will do, it might have to wait until retirement but it will happen.
