People who ride their bikes on the sidewalk...
Can't Post
Is it wrong for me to want to push these people over or scream at them??
I mean, I often run on the sidewalks in my neighborhood and time and time again
I have to move
out of the way for these folks that insist on making the sideWALK their biking path. No, there are no "NO BIKES ON SIDEWALK" signs posted, but seriously folks... if you're an adult or child over the age of 15, you know how to ride a bike and put a helmet on, there is no construction or anything keeping you from the road, get your ass on the street!
Sidewalks are for people on FOOT.
ARGHHH!

What's up with parents who take their kids out for rides, but then don't wear helmets? What's up with them? (sorry if that's a hijack lol)

That's not necessarily true. I don't know where you live, but Colorado state law permits riding bicycles on the sidewalk except where expressly prohibited by local ordinance.

I used to feel that way, but.....
Around Phoenix a lot of people seem to ride on sidewalks. Not your fancy yupee types with lycra, but more the immigrant types going to work with no helmet, etc. These folks do not mingle with traffic nearly as well as a racing bicycle. And a lot of urban riding type bikers are not comfortable on the streets unless there is a good bike lane.
It makes a big difference whether you are talking about a neighborhood street or a 6 lane city street with no bike lane and a 45mph speed limit
In my city, it is legal to ride on the sidewalk, so I'd have to say that you can WANT to scream or push them, but to do so, yeah, you'd be wrong. I don't fault anyone for trying to be safe, we all know that cars can't be trusted.
What bugs me more are the multi-use paths full of old folks walking the dogs, kids on training wheels, etc, and a bunch of posers in their "lance armstrong" attire rip off a 8 mile bike ride through there at 22 mph. Usually you can hear one of them giving advice about how to become a great cyclist like himself. If your gonna go faster than 15 mph, then by all means, get on the street.

It's kinda like the "Pet Peeve" thread, you're screwed either way.
Ride on the sidewalk and people there are pissed at you. Ride on the road and people driving cars are pissed at you and want you on the sidewalk.
FWIW I've been told by actual police officers to "Get of the road and ride on the sidewalk" as well as "Get of the sidewalk and ride on the road" Both in situations where no signs were present.
I just try to be curtious and not to piss to many people off...specially the ones with guns :-)

So because you don't like it, you want to either verbally abuse them or actually assault them, interesting.
You know, there are probably alot of people that
walk
on the sidewalk that get damned annoyed by this guy that keeps running by them. They probably wonder why he can't go find a running trail someplace and stop zooming by them, flinging sweat everywhere. Hell, they may even want to call him an asswipe or trip him hoping he would fall and get road rash, sprain an ankle or break a bone. Now that would be cool, huh?

I ride my mountain bike on the sidewalks downtown Atlanta all the time. So do all of the cops on bikes. I one time had this little spandex clad weasel say something to me about it in front of Georgia State. I told him if he said one more word I would smash his face with my krypton lock... I also run on the sidewalks in downtown and have no problem avoiding people on bikes, with dogs, in wheelchairs or anything else. I am always surprised by people who feel comfortable telling other people what to do. It is only a matter of time before you say something to someone who doesn't want to hear it.

If I have to move out of their way to avoid being hit/run over... then YES, I would like to push them or scream or somehow express my irritation. It may seem irrational to you, but if I am on foot and they are on a BIKE... who is more likely to come out on the bad end of things?
I don't typically wear a helmet when I run, and I kinda like all my ribs intact :P

Unfortunately I live in a country which combines central government directives (cycling is healthy - build more cycle paths!) with dumb local planning, which has led to a scattergun approach of putting cycles lanes wherever they'll fit, rather than wherever they're needed, and this includes the sidewalk in many cases. I still haven't worked out whether it's safer to take the sidewalk option where offered and dodge the pedestrians who are completely unaware they're wandering across a cycle lane with their iPod on, or stick to the road where the sight of a cyclist not using a cycle lane can make many drivers incandescent with fury.
For some examples of particularly bad planning, check out
http://www.warringtoncyclecampaign.co.uk/facility-of-the-month/
I go past this one on my commute, but generally choose to ignore the cycle path!

I don't really care about the sidewalks. What makes me mad is the ones riding in the bike lane on the left hand side of the road--coming straight at you while you are in the bike lane on the correct side of the road.

I'll give you the second part. They must obey laws applicable to pedestrians. But I've never seen the "ride at walking speed." requirement. This is 42-4-1412. I don't see a "walking speed" limitation.
(10)(a) A person riding a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing such pedestrian. A person riding a bicycle in a crosswalk shall do so in a manner that is safe for pedestrians.
(b) A person shall not ride a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk where such use of bicycles is prohibited by official traffic control devices or local ordinances. A person riding a bicycle shall dismount before entering any crosswalk where required by official traffic control devices or local ordinances.
(c) A person riding or walking a bicycle upon and along a sidewalk or pathway or across a roadway upon and along a crosswalk shall have all the rights and duties applicable to a pedestrian under the same circumstances, including, but not limited to, the rights and duties granted and required by section 42-4-802.

After breaking both shoulders & collarbones after going through the windshield of the car that hit me, I ride on the sidewalk until I get to the path that is physically separated from traffic, thanks.

I agree that you shouldn't be down in the aeros and doing 30 miles per hour on a sidewalk, but I use them for riding to and from my "safe" riding area.

i'm with you.
people who are too chicken to ride on the roads, yet somehow get off on terrorizing pedestrians.
here in philly, it's illegal for anyone over 12 to ride on the sidewalks. penalty: $10. a ton of people do it, all of them inconsiderate. occasionally this includes the police on mountainbikes.
these are crowded sidewalks, which are shared by the able-bodied and the less able-bodied alike.
the more egregious bikers, i'll startle them as they go by. then there's the hipsters who act all pushy when i don't get out of the way. newsflash: it's a sidewalk. not a bike path.

When I was a newly-minted lawyer, the senior partner in my firm decided to give up smoking and get into shape. So, he started riding his bike to work every day. The only problem was a pesky one-way street on his way home in our city's business district. Instead of riding against traffic, he would ride on the sidewalk. On a sunny day during our city’s “bike to work” week, the law finally caught up with him and a bike cop gave him a $40 ticket. Not long thereafter, he came into my office asked me to defend him. In our city, it is only illegal to ride on a sidewalk where the sidewalk “abuts” a building, but from what I was hearing, it sounded like he was guilty as hell.
Nonetheless, he sent me to court for the pre-trial. The prosecutor offered to settle the ticket for a dollar plus court costs. Pleased, with the offer, I passed it on to my boss. Unfortunately for me, he didn’t think much of the offer and commanded me to take the case to trial.
At trial, the prosecutor called the police officer to testify and offered an 8x10 color glossy picture with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back explaining how it was to be used as evidence against my scofflaw client. The officer testified flawlessly. She pointed out the building, and the sidewalk, and explained that yes, she saw my boss riding his bike right there, where the sidewalk pavement extended right up to the front of the building. I stumbled through a feeble cross examination, and the prosecutor rested his case. Then I smiled at the prosecutor and asked the judge to dismiss the case. I explained:
The City prohibits riding your bike on a sidewalk where it abuts a building. By statute, a “sidewalk” is defined as "that portion of a highway between the curb lines, or the lateral lines of a roadway, and the adjacent property lines, constructed for use of pedestrians." According to that definition, the sidewalk ends at the property line. So, I explained to the judge, in order for the sidewalk to “abut” the building, the building must extend right up to the property line. If the building is set back from the property line at all, then the sidewalk cannot abut the building. So, for Mr. Prosecutor to prove his case, he needs to prove that the building edge and the property line are one in the same. Mr. Prosecutor, however, didn’t put in any evidence on where the property line was, and did not prove his case. (In fact, there was no way he could have proved that because that part of the city was so old the City Engineer had no survey maps. I had checked with the engineer’s office before the trial).
The prosecutor replied with an argument that was something like this: “That’s ridiculous . .. you can see where the sidewalk is in these pictures.” The judge said: “You know . . .He’s right. . . You didn’t prove your case.” “Dismissed.”
That case soon became part of our firm’s lore.

I can understand why some people are too afraid to ride on the street, but it really drives me crazy when I walk around a corner and I am nearly run over by someone riding full speed on the sidewalk.

Spoken like a non-lawyer. I doubt the senior partner cared about the fine or the offense. He was giving his associate some experience and a test, which he/she passed with flying colors. That said, you could be right. Maybe he was just an egomaniacal jackass. But the experience for a newbie lawyer was probably invaluable.
