PC Help - Microsoft Office Can't Post

Wife is having a problem with her new laptop. She has office 2003 installed on it. Well somebody sent her a word doc that she opened. Apparently it was from office 2007. Now everytime she tries to directly open a doc or xls, it defaults to trying to open office 2007 instead of her 2003 program. It then tries to setup 2007 and asks for the authorization code etc.

Its a royal pain in the ass for her. I told her if she would just open the doc or xls thru office 2003, it would work. Well apparently that is too hard because she wants to open them directly from "my documents" and have vista select the program.

I went thru the default settings and I think I have word docs opening with the 2003 version, but couldn't get xls to open with 2003. XLS still defaults to 2007.

Any ideas?

The default file associations for Windows Explorer probably got hosed. For Windows Vista look here http://ask-leo.com/...n_windows_vista.html or here http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/...0878_11-6172036.htmlbut for Windows Xp or Windows 2003, you can check as follows:
  • Start -> Run -> explore.exe
  • In the menubar at the top of Exporer, click Tools -> Folder Options
  • On the Folder Options dialog, click the File Types tab
  • In the registered file types: list, scroll down to and select 'XLS' from the list
  • Click the Advanced button and then in the Edit File Type.
  • Select 'Open' in the Actions list and then click the Edit button:

  • Verify the path in the 'Application used to perform action:' edit box and if incorrect, you can use the 'Bwose...' button to navigate to the correct file:
