I'm looking at him right now. He's bouncing. Keep in mind that at that moment he and Putin knew, but the rest of the world did not, that Russia had rolled into Georgia and "war" had been declared. Many casualties, etc. He and Putin had met on the matter already. I think Bush was concerned that if they invaded Georgia, Alabama might be next, and then Texas was at risk.
Do you like Laura?
Was Bill embarrassing?
Did you have your eye on any of the Chinese girls who carried the flags in front of the Country Contingents?
I hate to admit it but the opening ceremonies were incredible.

Anyone else notice that when the US athletes were going over the "stamp pad", that they showed a bored GWB tapping his US flag on his thigh.

I thought you were going to get your wish when the torch guy reached the lip of the stadium - was I the only one that thought when he adjusted his cables that one of them had snapped and he was going to fall?

I agree that the show was incredible. I heard Bob "Babbling Nonsensically" Costas say that the ceremony cost $300million. Wow. The drums were amazing and the best part was when they turned out the lights. Yeah, London has one hell of a job to do to match this, but think about it this way. London built the Millenium Dome so they might be capable of doing a decent job.
Yes, Bush looked bored and uninterested most of the time.

I'm planning on going to the London Olympics and I was thinking that myself...what the hell to they do to top that?? I'm picturing the Grenadier Guards marching up and down for four hours.

I would like to know if that was contemporaneous or edited out of sync.
But I agree that you don't have to do too much to make him look stupid.

I'm sure security had nothing to do with his seating location, either.

That's incredible focus on Bush's part to keep his eyes looking forward and up. I don't think I could have done it. ;-)

I'm with you on how incredible the opening ceremonies were. I've never seen one like it. Both London and Vancouver have a lot of work to do.
Those girls carrying the nations flags were gorgeous. Talk about floating across the floor. Really, the whole thing was amazing.
Yeah, we thought the guy was going to fall when he adjusted the wires.
What stood out in contrast to me was the French president, jacket still buttoned and poised, and even Laura sitting straight, looking put together. Then there was Bush. I don't care how uncomfortable the seats were, you are the President for crying out loud. Look it and act it.

Don't feel sorry for London, there's nothing to worry about because no one is going to be able to get out there. 3 F**king hours from Homerton to Stratford to Streatham.
I used to work for the Jubilee line 4 years ago and it's no better today than it was there. If people think traffic in Beijing with a population of 70m sucks they have no idea how bad London will be.
That said, loads of moving earth around in east london, I'm sure there is some sort of plan but at present they just seem to move large piles of earth from point A to point B

While visually impressive, did anyone else find the music just incongruous?
I mean, North Korea entering to Scotland the Brave on highland pipes?? The whole flip in music tracks drove me to distraction.

I'm with you on how incredible the opening ceremonies were.
Two comments:
1. The smog seesm to be a serious issue. Am I the only one wondering what conrtibution all of those fireworks made to the poor air quality!!!
2. In Canada we do a lot of things right and well. Unfortunatly, chooseing Olympic Uniforms for our athletes is not one of those things that we do very well. What was the COC thinking. The Canadian team looked like a cross between commercial painters and someone going to a beach party. It was rather embaressing considering how great many of the other countries looked.

The kid who walked with Yao Ming was the greatest. Survived a earthquake that killed 20 of his 30 class mates. He saved two of his class mates because he said he was the hall monitor and that it was his responsability. What a 9 year old bad ass! I teared up. Sorry but bad asses are so few and far between these days that seing that little hero just got to me.

While I will admit that the ceremonies were indeed spectacular, I thought goose-stepping soldiers was in pretty poor taste. Not the soldiers, but the goose-stepping bit, given the history of that.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed. I tend to filter my reactons to GW by saying 'wait you can't stand the guy, so you're gonna nit pick everything', but in this case I believe my cringe was justified. For petesakes, he's POTUS. I could only imagine my Dad doping slapping me if I slouched like that.
OTOH the opening ceremonies were outstanding, 1/5 of the world's population, Yao and the little kid, the guy on guywires, all I could say was, I dunno my jaw was dropped.
