Olympics - love 'em or hate 'em?
Can't Post
Well, it's the 8th day of the 8th month of the year 2008 - and the games begin? I love the Olympics despite the politics, the cheating and all the other crap (this year it's the pollution) that goes with it. To me, it's a great show - flaws and all! I watched a bit of the opening ceremonies this morning before leaving for work and they were spectacular!
So what do you love or hate about the Olympics?

In Canada - on CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation). They were on from 6 to 10 this a.m. and will be re-broadcasting tonight at 8pm (CST).
If you are outside Canada, you could check out
www.cbc.ca
- I think there are some video clips there.

I love the Olympics.
From a sport perspective there are few things I would have loved to do:
* Be part of the French soccer team during the World Cup (or Euro)
* Ride the Tour has a pro.
* & since I know live in Canada, play some hockey.
* Be part of the French squad and be in the Olympics (archery or swimming or rowing, or whatever but ideally a marquee sport)
It is sad to see the political/diplomatic influence (and bribery that must go on behind the scene) taking over.
The "one world one dream" slogan on the other hand is pure bulleshit!

I had a goal to run in either the 800m or 1500m in the 84 Olympics in LA. Stress fractures in my metatarsal bones stopped my from reaching my dream goal. I could have been in that infamous race between Mary Decker and Zola Budd!

Agreed! I'm not a fan of China, but I am a fan of the guy who produced the opening ceremony. It was
TRULY
impressive! Ironic however, that there were so many themes of 'peace' and 'harmony'.

Did you see the swimmer thread in the womens forum? What's not to love?
Unfortunately I don't have a TV so I will have to moch the olympics off of friends if I have time.

I honestly do not give a crap about the human rights situation - one could argue (and some do) that the US is one of the biggest human rights violators in the world.
Bring on the games, and keep the politics, wars and other crap out of it.
I look at it like a vacation. Let people play unimportant games and compete and enjoy themselves. Save the pining about the unfairness of the world for later.

Similarly, one could argue (and some do) that Canada is as repressive as China is, what with your human rights commissions.
Which is to say, one would be an idiot to argue that.

I'm thinking of the games and the athletes who have worked so hard to get there. It is a shame about it being in China but that isn't the fault of the athletes. I want to see some amazing performances and have already put the triathlon and 10k OW swim on my calendar so I dont miss them. Tonight is a big swimming night.

Mixed feelings these days. Years ago watching was a great source of inspiration for me. Still is. I have been lucky to achieve a decent amount of success as an athlete, but nothing could match the thrill, excitment and emotion, when a local kid, from my province, who was a friend, in a sport that in a small and round about way I helped put on the map locally, took the Gold medal in the first ever Olympic Triathlon. I stood there in front of the TV cheering, and crying with tears of joy running down my face! It was a truly extraordinary moment that I will never, ever forget. Thanks, Simon. That's what the Olympics can mean to people. Unfortunatly, and this is stating the obvious that it has become too big, too commercial, and in the case of China a giant propaganda piece to show-case China. I'll still watch as much as I can - I love watching any sport that is well played, by the best in the world and is competitive and just about every match, race and event at the Olympic Games delivers that.
