For a interesting view on what went wrong in the immediate post-invasion aftermath, go here: http://usacac.army.mil/CAC2/CSI/OP2.asp

While I don't for a second absolve Rumsfeld of blame for what went wrong in Iraq, the military deserves some of the blame as well. The Army does a good job of looking at its own performance here and calling a spade a spade.

It was about creating a pro-Western force in the Middle East. This meant kicking out a ruthless dictator and giving the people political/gender/religious freedoms they saw fit. Why didn't it happen in N. Korea or Iran? Because N. Korea is behind the Iraqi know-how curve in biological/nuclear weapons, and occupation of Iran just ain't happening.

Iraq was selected for it's borders, application of an attainable mission, and returns.

This isn't Candyland. It would be really great to go into all of the suppressed nations of the world and bring them the SUV and sprawling front yard. But we all know that isn't feasible. So yeah, we weigh the risks with the benefits. The point of the benefits is a sympathetic oil-rich nation. If we have a physical hand in the operations, well then that's just super.

Would you prefer Iran to be handling the oil fields?

I thought they were selected because of the WMD?

We can't keep making justifications after the fact, well we can but they don't pass the smell test.

Iraq has had oil fields for a long time and Iran has never handled them so I'm not sure what that has got to do with anything. Since we invaded Iraq, Iran has become more powerful in that area because Hussein was a balancing force in the area. It is a good thing Hussein is gone but we created this mess.

I find it somewhat disconcerting that Iran has become more powerful because of our actions, and now many feel justified attacking Iran because of that. There seems to be something odd about that.

It really is about oil.

well, here's the quote from McCain:

"My friends, I will have an energy policy that we will be talking about, which will eliminate our dependence on oil from the Middle East that will — that will then prevent us — that will prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East."

You guys keep saying this, and I keep asking....if that is really what is all about, why are we now 5 years into this thing, and we still don't have an extra drop of Iraqi oil to hit the market? Why is Iraq calling the shots on the bids for increasing oil production? 35 companies from a variety of countries are all in on the bidding, not just US and British companies.

It seems to me you guys want to argue contradictory things...that Bush is some sort of evil genius who manufactured a reason to go to war to get Iraqi oil, yet failed to plan to actually get that oil. And all of these arguments about oil completely fail to take into context where the country was in 2002 in the immediate aftermath of 9-11 and the intel that was discovered during the Tora Bora operation.

I still have to ask if all that was wanted was oil then didn't the US just make a deal with Saddam? It would have been more profitable.
