This is just too damn funny, Casey. In response to a post in which I tell you that you are completely detached from the current reality, you cite an article written one year ago, having mistaken it for a current article.

I posted the wrong one but there is no point in posting the correct one, you will just attack the author.

I will concede that the decision to go to Iraq was the right one and that we are not only winning but have won the war. We have won because of the free democracy in Iraq, which is spreading across the region, making not only us safer but the entire world. I think all of us opposed to the war in Iraq owe a debt of gratitude to President Bush. (no pink intended).

As for Afghanistan, since we won 4 years ago, I suppose there is nothing more to add.

I am writing my last post for at least a year as we are ready to move into more remote parts of India without computer access and I can only say, despite the success of the wars, that I am not proud of what has happened to America in the last 8 years and it is one of the main reasons why I left.

You can continue waving the flag and say our involvement in other countries internal affairs is a good thing but I will never agree. I think America has to spend more time working on Americans problems and less on other people that we selectively decide to help, only for our own self interest. America has a lot of good to offer, I just wish they would focus on that and stop the fighting.

Peace.

I really don't understand how anyone could argue this point on Obama. Regardless of what he says, his website has always said that the withdrawal would immediately begin with 1-2 combat brigades and continue at that pace, and be complete within 16 months. Listening to NPR this morning, hardly right-wing smear artists, characterized Obama's plans on Iraq in exactly those terms. There is no way to parse the words on his website and get something different.

WTF is up with his race to the center: faith based initiatives, immunity to telecom companies, hardening his stance on iran, and now this. If he pulls his head out of his fiscal ass and devises a decent tax/spending policy he could become a good candidate.

Re: Obama Rewrites Iraq Plan [ajfranke] [In reply to] Can't Post

Anyone who thinks Obama is going to run on a lose the Iraq War Now platform, vote for me, is just kidding themselves. Demanding Bush lose on his watch is entirely different than signing up to lose on one's own watch.

Exactly.

I'm surprised at the surprise, frankly. His withdraw plan was established prior to the start of the Democratic primary, prior to any significant gains being made on the ground in Iraq. He's been mostly silent on the issue over the past few months, and for obvious reasons. There was no doubt in my mind that he would do exactly what any serious candidate for the presidency should be expected to do; revisit (or "refine") his position as conditions on the ground continue to evolve. Only the radical lefties (who want immediate withdraw, period) and far righties (who seemed to believe the ridiculous notion that Obama truly wants America to lose in Iraq) who thought he would approach this in absolute terms - fingers in the ears, developments and assessments be damned - are the slightest bit confused by it.
His Republican and Independent detractors will most certainly criticize him for any perceived shift in his position, even though most of them realize it's the logical and correct approach. The fact that his apparent shift is the focus of the criticism among this group - and not the issue itself - is telling.

The political calculation behind the timing is what drew people's attention more than anything, I think. He didn't speak much about his position during his fight with Hillary, even though conditions in Iraq aren't all that different now than 3 months ago. Now that she's out of the way, he can safely broach the subject again without losing support among the far left, while standing only to achieve a net gain with those in the middle.

The guy is a shrewd politician, no doubt. The question will be whether or not his shrewdness devalues the Obama brand to a point where it fails to draw the requisite number of undecideds. Four months is an awfully long time in politics.

"Four months is an awfully long time in politics"

My feeling is MaCain's got considerably less than 4 mos to make his case. Assuming the conventions/vp picks are a wash (and if Obama can fill Bronco stadium and deliver a a decent speech that's a big assumption), then you're left with the debates. Barack had his ups and downs with debates but Hillary was much better at it than MaCain (who doesn't do debates well, witness his performance against Romney) so I don't see Obama losing based on the debates. At this point the McCain campaign is dead in the water, consistently behind in the polls, behind in fund raising, you name it he's behind in it. Nah, the Republicans better come up with a Swift Boat/Willie Horton-type solution by Labor day or practice (now repeat after me) 'President Obama' (cue the fist bump).
