Which is why it is important to allow US mines to expand: they can operate under the most stringent environmental laws, provide safe jobs, and allows the US to easily procure strategic metals like gold and platinum/palladium.

so since you can't be perfect is it worth to not do anything at all? Last I heard you don't need to buy gold/diamonds to survive... but then again if you listen to the tv 'true love' is not 'true love' without some gold & diamonds involved, and 'used gold' is not really gold anymore.

Ok, but if gold is a source of income and survival for these people, how does not buying gold help them? Wouldn't that be taking away the best option they currently have, so they have to go to their next best option...who knows what that is.

I don't have any gold or diamonds, and you are right. One can survive without those things. Whats the next thing on the list to do our part to right the world.
All I am saying is that there are more "evils" in the world than any of us care to look at, let alone do anything about. And its all stuff we could live without.

All I am saying is that there are more "evils" in the world than any of us care to look at, let alone do anything about.
all I am saying is that if by doing something very simple and with basically zero repercussions for your lifestyle you can decrease the amount of evil going on in the world, then why not do it?

Actually if anyone uses electronics from Cell phones to cars they have gold. It is used on most semiconductors in some way as it doesn't corrode and conducts electricity well.

The same is true of lots of gemstones as well. Also wood, seafood, chocolate, etc.
gemstones: definitely
wood: you can find sustainable wood products if you are willing to pay a little extra and to not use certain hardwoods
seafood: you can find sustainable seafood if you are willing to pay extra or to not eat certain fish species
chocolate: you can find fair trade sustainable chocolate if you are willing to pay extra and forego pretty much any sort of commercial chocolate product (cookies, cereal, ...)
another big one is palm oil, chief reason why a lot of rainforests in Indonesia are being burned down; nobody is saying that you need to be 'perfect', but the typical attitude of 'there are so many things, too many, so let me just stick my head in the sand' is just as extreme, although unfortunately quite common.

with the amount of gold in an average ring you can create a LOT of electronics, not to mention that, once again, I never said to not use anything that contains gold, that is not realistic, but not buying pointless 'ohh shiny' baubles extracted at great human cost is a completely different and much easier goal.

Agreed.
Just wanted to point out that these things are in many items we use daily with out realizing it. Amounts are small but it's there. Many people probably don't know this.
Going point on Palm oil.
It is extremely difficult to avoid these types of things in today's world. Not saying that it can't be minimized but awareness of what is there is important.
