New Gaming the York Times Best Seller list Can't Post

Obama Nation is number one on the New York Times Bestseller list. That means people will consider this book more credible. And the the media will take the book more seriously, and GOP noise machine will refer to this book as a best seller and hype it as such, and its author will be a NYT Best Selling author, giving him more credibility.

My problem is not with the book per se but with gaming the NYT bestseller list. How is it done? Bulk purchases. GOP operatives (?) purchase large amounts of books at one time, then give them away or put them in a warehouse. This action artificially inflates the book's sales giving the false impression that individuals are buying it and loving it. This lends instant credibility to a book that at best is dubious. The author pulled the same trick with his book about John Kerry.

How can you tell if there are bulk orders? The Times puts a dagger next to the book title that has reported bulk orders and guess what:

1. THE OBAMA NATION, by Jerome R. Corsi. (Threshold, $28.) The Democratic candidate as an extreme leftist, from the co-author of “Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry.” (†)

New York Times best seller list

This book and the author will now be on every media outlet for weeks to come spreading his dubious propaganda about Obama. Its a great trick and some investigative report ought to look into it. Found out sales information and see who is really buying the book.

I can't answer any of your questions.

However, I just watched the first half of a clip of the Larry King show where they interviewed Corsi, along with an Obama spinner to counter.

My first thought was, if you put all the Obama negatives into this book, does that in some way invalidate them as future talking points for other pro-Republicans (from Rush on up)? The reasoning for this (weird?) question is that now, the Democrats/pro-Obama supporters can/will refute any charge that was mentioned in this book on the basis that the charge's source is this wacko ultra-right author, and therefore isn't a legit charge and doesn't need to be answered.

I think the noise machine should be more concerned with the face that Corsi, in addition to being they who slimed Kerry, is also quite active in the "9/11 Truth" movement; i.e., that 9/11 is one big government conspiracy.

That ought to make his media appearances fairly entertaining, if uninformative.

I think you're missing the point. None of it has to be true, and its likely that none of it is. All it has to do is get bought in bulk, distributed to true believers who then maybe influence some of the dopier independents, and its served its purpose. Its not as if there's any scholarship here, and there's something strange about an author who argues that point-by-point refutation of his "evidence" somehow doesn't detract from his "larger point" which apparently doesn't actually require evidence.

All it is is chaff, and provides some distraction to the public, and potentially to Obama's campaign. Whether any of it is true, and given his track record, is unlikely to be the case.

It's just a slightly more elaborate way of saying, "so, Senator, when did you stop beating your wife?"

I think that these kinds of books only appeal to the non-thinking masses, no the more educated cynical types (but that is another thread ;-) ).

I would suspect that a lot if not most of the book is not factual, and as you say, there are people who will believe it, if for no other reason than it is in print, and God help me why people are willing to believe anything if it is simply in neat, typed print. Bottom line is, I mostly agree with everything you're saying.

My question is, though, there are going to be a few "nuggets" that are true, or at least have some factual foundation. Something useful for the Republican case in this situation. What I'm wondering is can those "nuggets" be painted as tainted (hey, I'm a poet now) because this particular author included them in this book. A future refutation would only have to specify the source and essentially say " 'nuff said." Mind you this argument goes both ways, Dem propaganda against Repubs as well. So, in other words, it could actually have a backfire reaction and dull the effect.

The facts have very little do woththe whole business. ;-)

Wrong on both counts:

"Corsi writes for World Net Daily, a conservative Web site whose lead headline Thursday was "Astonishing photo claims: Dead Bigfoot stored on ice." "

Well, to deploy a little Corsi/WND logic on you, can you prove that Bigfoot isn't on ice somewhere? Then it's a reasonable question for the electorate to be suspicious of, eh?

I won't fall for that one. Use your noggin.

It's August, and everyone knows that Bigfeet vacation in upper Alaska in August. Of course, they're going to have their feet propped up on a block of ice while drinking a nice cold one. Why hang around in Oregon?

Not defending any particular website here, as I haven't seen it, but are you aware that there is a group of folks that claim to have Bigfoot's body, and are planing to make an announcement tomorrow?

So the headline, referencing a picture, purportedly of a Bigfoot body "on ice", is perfectly legit, is it not?

Note that I didn't say that the picture itself is legit, or that the claim to possess the body of the dreaded monster (gasp) is legit, but there's really nothing wrong with the headline, as you have presented it, is there?

So much for using CNN, or anyone who reports for them as a news source anymore, I guess, according to your logic. The Sun is also right out (note: I have no idea how credible The Sun is...)

"Is that a Bigfoot carcass in the freezer?"
http://www.cnn.com/...foot.body/index.html
"Bigfoot Body found in US."
http://www.thesun.co.uk/...s/article1557852.ece

Methinks your logic is askew.

Uh, that would be what I posted in the post before your post.

As for the rest of your post, I didn't really follow it. I'm not sure if you are referring to this thread, of which the last three posts of mine were totally tongue in cheek, or if you are referring to the other thread regarding CNN, statistics and military voting treads.
