Movie Review: Hancock Can't Post

4th of July comes arund, so it must be time for a Will Smith movie, right? Well, Hancock is no Independence Day, but it is well worth thr trip to the theater on a long holiday weekend.

Hancock is the story of John Hancock (Will Smith), the only "superhero" on Earth. Hancock is a drunk, has a lousy temper, and is, in general, an asshole. As the movie begins, you get to see Hancock in all his glory, as he fights crime leaving his own particular brand of drunken disaster in his wake. When he steps in to save the life of Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), he finds a new friend. Ray is a PR guy, down on his luck, but a good man at heart, and he sees goodness in Hancock that the rest of the city can't see. Ray convinces Hancock to set out on a path to a better image that starts with accepting responsibility for his past collateral damage and going to jail. As Hancock spends time behind bars, dries up, and starts to understand who he is and what his purpose could be, the crime rate in the city explodes, and soon enough, Ray's plan works and the city welcomes Hancock back with open arms. This is when the movie takes some twists and turns that I won't ruin for you, but that turn the film into more than just another superhero action flick.

You've seen a lot of the action for this movie in the trailers and commercials. That said, you haven't seen all of it, and you haven't seen a lot of the comedy that is intertwined with pretty decent action and a surprisingly decent storyline that isn't even hinted at in the previews. Will Smith is good as always, and he is backed up by funny and heartfelt performances from Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife Mary. The special effects are good, but not spectacular. This is not a movie that will have you leaving the theater talking about some cool piece of CGI or new technique like Wanted. The action flows pretty well, and the humor runs throughout the movie without turning the film into an all out comedy. Additionally, there's a fairly touching storyline that develops through the film that actually elevates this movie above the standard superhero films that we've been seeing lately. Without sounding too pretentious, I would simply say that this movie is slightly less comic booky than recent movies like The Incredible Hulk or Ironman, probably aided in part because this isn't an iconic superhero character.

The film is rated PG-13 mostly for language. There's some violence, but it's all big crashes and explosions, without much graphic blood and guts, and there's almost no sexual material.

If you are looking to hit the theaters this holiday weekend, and judging by the crowds at my local theater, many people are; you pretty much can't miss with Hancock. There's enough action and enough funny for guys, but it's toned down enough and there's enough of a story for the ladies. Good family fun.

Most of the reviews I have read said the movie sucked. My wife and I saw it today and I was thoroughly impressed. Nice review on your end too, pretty much how I felt.

Thanks Slowguy. We'll likely see this movie based mostly on your positive review.
