More McCain "straight talk"... Can't Post

From the Washington Monthly:

[McCain on the Sunday talk show:]

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, that means payroll tax increases are on the table, as well?
MCCAIN: There is nothing that's off the table.

Today, after getting beat up by the tax jihadist wing of the GOP, here's the candidate's mouthpiece on Fox:

KELLY: Might the Social Security tax go up? Is that on the table?
BOUNDS: No, Megyn, there is no imaginable circumstance where John McCain would raise payroll taxes. It's absolutely out of the question.

[ML] I'm sure someone will explain that these are consistent positions...Another outstanding line recently was when a McCain spokesperson said something to the effect that statements made by McCain don't necessarily jibe with what is written on his web site and aren't necessarily "official" policy...crack staff he has...

same scenario has already played out for Obama, even to a staffer saying that what he says or puts forth is subject to change after the election. Looks like these things are just part of campaigns, and we don't really know what to expect. This is where Obama loses some ground to McCain...people feel like they can at least look to a long record in politics to see how McCain might act.

Except he doesn't appear to be the same politician anymore...not that it's being reported too much.

Edited to add: There is a difference between a staffer saying that the policies may change after the election and a staffer saying that what McCain himself says isn't official. Not that there aren't issues with both--it's just not the same issue...

Absolutely, the problem with McCain's long history is that so much of it is different from what he said in the last few months. That pretty much renders that history obsolete...especially for those of us that liked the "old John McCain." This new one that just came off the assembly line, doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin. Maybe he needs to molt again...

That's pretty much what I'm saying. Joe voter realizes that both these guys are lieing hard to win the office, throws out everything they've said since starting this presidential bid, and looks to life before that to inform him on who the candidate really is.

Obama is doing what all Dems do in Presidential races, running to the left in the primary and to the center in the general. Bog standard stuff.

McCain has a much trickier problem. He didn't have the Republican base in the primary, they mostly sat it out not having a candidate they liked very much. He has to run to the right from a centerist position in order to motivate the base to get out and vote. But he also has to maintain his maverick independent credentials as well. From day to day McCain is all over the spectrum, yesterday in San Francisco he was heaping praise on Nancy Pelosi and Al Gore, today in Nevada he has his right winger hat on. Makes for a tough campaign.

No...I think "joe voter" doesn't give a shit, doesn't look closely and most likely will vote for the white guy...name Maverick!

Joe Voter has a thimbles understanding of the issues, works on sound bites and reacts to underlying Paris Hilton jealousy and Obama's blackness.

If Joe Voter actually listened there would be torch burnings of both of the major parties...but joe voter doesn't have the inclination to actually change anything...he accepts the scraps the major parties give him, laps it up and begs for a little bit more.

As for McCain...he is a shill...ready to jump in bed with the people that buried him 8 years ago with attacks on his sanity and his families sanity. That tells me all I need to know about his "history." He wants this bad...feels it is his turn, waiting as the patient dog on the porch waits for master to come home. Like Dole he feels that time is slipping--have we so quickly moved past the Vietnam generation?--just as Dole hoped for one more WWII vet in the Oval Office--McCain hopes for just one more chance.

I admire your attempt to play the apologist but it is really an upside down argument. "Don't listen to what he is saying now...cause he is lying...look at him 8, 10-12 years ago when he didn't suffer from a lack of truthiness."

--Pretty easy to see what you did there--

Uh, yeah, because well, that's what I said I was doing. Do you think that after the election cycle, whether McCain wins or not, he will be what he is representing now, or what he has been for the rest of his career up till this time?

I think nothing of people that lie to the public to garner votes...they take advantage of "joe voters" half baked prejudice and play on fear. Just as I think nothing of people that offer pitiful hope in the form of empty rhetoric...

The major party contenders need fewer apologists and more microscopes.

McCain is a shill and Obama is a shill...the only apology is to America specifically and democracy in general that these two twits are the "best" we have for such an important office.

Some choice...like a doctor that offers you a choice of ailments... cancer or heart disease.

Did he happen to mention that the surge was working?

Reporter: "Senator, what is your plan for the housing crisis?"
McCain: "The surge is working and Sen. Obama refuses to acknowledge it."

I'm really looking forward to the Obama-McCain debates. When viewed side by side, their differences are going to be accentuated x10....and that's good for Obama.
