MDX chick car? Can't Post

Is the Acura MDX a chick car?

I am in the market for a new to me (2007 model) car, and have run into issues in making the decision which one to get.

I have narrowed it down to the Acura MDX or the Audi Q7.
I see a lot of women driving MDX's and rarely see men driving them.

Is the MDX worth getting or should I consider other vehicles?

These are the vehicles I have ruled out:
Range Rover - They depreciate too fast
Land Rover - Rear space too short. If you want to put down the back seats, you have to remove the headrests.
Mercedes ML - It's not a young persons car.
Lexus GX - The rear tailgate opens towards the curb and the 3rd row folds up the side of the wall taking a ton of space.
BMW - I don't like the looks and I think the interiors are too harsh.
No domestic brands.

"..I am in the market for a new to me (2007 model) car...Range Rover - They depreciate too fast"

Isn't that what you want, a car that already took the biggest depreciation? 2005/6/7 Range Rovers are on fire sale here in California. Like the look but wouldn't get one personally.

If the X5 is too harsh maybe you should get the mdx chick car...just kidding, I like the older MDX ;)

IMHO - Not exactly a chick car - more of a suburban/yuppie mom "I will not be caught owning a minivan but do need to drive the kids around" vehicle.

Saw one yesterday - changing my mid it is not a chick/female car but it is a yuppie car. Please note that I do not use the word yuppie as an insult per se.

The Acura, the Lexus, the BMW X5 are definitely chick cars.

You might want to take a peek at repair histories of these models along with that whole "chick car" thing.

I'll skip the "chick car" classification but we looked at the same trucks plus the Cayenne and picked the Q7 and never had a secdond thought - the car is awesome. We have the 4.2l - is is quick for such a big truck, looks great, handles well, nice standard features in the 4.2 - only issue is that it sucks the gas but that might also have something to do with how heavy my foot is!

Plus I got a great deal on the car - it is a 2008 that was purchased right when 2009's hit the lot, sticker was $68k and paid $51k.

I wish I had your dilemma. I make good money, but I can't imagine being at the point of deciding between vehicles in that price range. FWIW, I'd stay away from the GX. It drives like my $18k pontiac (which are both incidentally toyotas, and quite reputable). Audi makes a solid vehicle, but I've never driven anything bigger than an A6. Service is always a point of contention in Audi reviews. Based on the choices, I assume you don't care about emissions or fuel economy, and that's where my brain leads my wallet.

If that had unicorns on the side then it would be a real "man's" car.

One note, I have a car that has a tailgate that opens to the curb. It bothered me when I was shopping, but I haven't noticed since. I will admit that I don't normally park in on the street, but even when I do it isn't a problem. I found that I actually prefer the side opening rear door over a lift back. When your hands are full of groceries, you still have a foot to close the door.

Buy a RAV4 with v-6 for half the price and bank the rest.

Re: MDX chick car? [slmcknight] [In reply to] Can't Post

My question is do you feel the need to buy the "luxury" brands and if so, why?

For the price of the cars below, you could get a new Honda Pilot or Toyota 4-Runner/Highlander with all the warranty benefits, new car smell, etc. Or you could save a bundle and buy an '07 or '08 version and put the savings to work for you instead of in a depreciating asset like a car.

The Acura MDX is basically a gussied up Pilot, and the Lexus GX is basically a gussied up 4-Runner.

But, if you have to spend the money, I would look at the MDX or a Toyota Landcruiser. We own 2 Pilots and they have been bulletproof, hence the recommendation for the MDX. Also, I believe the new model was recently picked as the best mid-sized luxury SUV by Car and Driver. On the Landcruiser, they are the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle. No offense to the other cars you have listed, but repair costs on the more mainstream brands are (almost) always lower than the luxury brands, the total cost of owndership is usually lower, and in the end it is just something to get you from A to B. My brother owns an X-5 and I do not see the appeal over my Pilot, particularly at 1.5x to 2x the cost.

lol, I think the most I've ever paid for a car is less than you saved. Not that I have not had a lot of neat cars over the years, but I usually buy used ---> well used range.

I was always told that a "chick car" is a two seater. Doesn't matter how big, how fast, how much muscle; if it seats two? It's a chick car.

Vehicles are vehicles, they don't have gender. Just my opinion, but I'm pretty sure it's backed up by fact.

The MDX is really nice, nicer than a Pilot (which is also really nice). And it's got Honda engineering and reliability. The Audi has an awesome interior (like all Audi's) and just about the worst reliability ratings a car can get. I'd go for the MDX (and, oddly enough, I'm also toying around with the idea of getting an MDX.)

Good luck and good day.

My husband drove an MDX for years; I never thought of it as a chick car.

Worrying about what other people think of your ride makes whatever you drive a chick car. Real men drive what they want, anyone not cool with it can screw themselves.

None of those choices have any off-road cred, so it comes down to street performance. For my money, the Q7 would be the easy choice among those two. I've been driving an X5 since 2002. If a stylish used SUV was on my radar, I'd probably shop for a G-500 and then make it look like a rock crawler...assuming I care more about how cool I am than actual functionality.

I think the Land Rover Discovery (or LR3) and the Lexus GX have plenty of off-road ability (and cred in the case of the Land Rover).

Of course, the typical SUV owner might never use it ... but who is counting anyway? That is why we ended up with Pilots. Plenty of room and performance for me and all our toys, all wheel drive when needed in the mountains, and half-way decent gas mileage (I average 19 to 20, which is what a buddy got in a Volvo XC-70 wagon with a whole lot less room and height and not than much worse than a mid-sized V6 sedan).

I am rising in my company and hoping to make executive ranks within the next year.
Everybody in these ranks drive luxury vehicles and, in the same vein of "dress for the position you want, not the one you have", I want to go luxury.
I love the 4Runner. I had a '97 and loved it. I love the rolldown window in the back and the size is perfect. Unfortunately, its not luxury.

Re: MDX chick car? [slmcknight] [In reply to] Can't Post

Fair enough ... all of your choices are nice. I guess if it were my money I would go with the MDX or the Lexus (if you can get past the fold up 3rd row seat) simply based on the reliability and performance (new version of the MDX ... not the older version). If you can find one and have the funds, another nice choice would be the G-Class Benz (the boxy one). Very cool, not a lot of them running around, and definitely in the "dress for the position you want" class. The Rover's (either the Range or LR3) will be a maintenance nightmare. I looked at a Discovery and a Range Rover (both used) before we purchased our Pilot and the reliability is subpar. The others are nice, but I am leery about the long-term reliability of the BMW or Audi and simply like the G-Class Benz better than the ML.

A buddy at GS traded his Lexus GX for a Lexus LX. He really enjoyed the GX but they needed something bigger for the third kid.

I know you said no domestic ... but the Yukon Denali and Escalade are mighty nice.

Yes it is a chick car. - BIG TIME.

Consider a Dodge Challenger (fast and sporty) or Dodge Ram (enough said)- I believe they were Canadian and now are Italian.

No domestic brands rules out most "guy cars".

Here would be a short list (some cars, some trucks, all are "guy"):

Dodge Challenger SRT 8, Dodge Viper, Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500, Ford Mustang GT 500, Chevy Corvette, Ferarri, Lamborghini, Hummer H-1 (NOT THE H-2 or 3), Porche 911.
