Looking for a GPS unit
Can't Post
So I'm starting to look for a GPS unit and would like to use it in 2 ways; first, and primarily, for driving directions, and second to use while hiking/backpacking trails.
Is it possible to get a unit that can do both? Although I don't know how much you would need a GPS while hiking, as long as you had a good map. I'm just starting my search and figured I'd ask those of you out there who use these regularly. I started looking at the Garmin Nuvi 260 but doesn't look like it would be suitable for the trails. Or do I look at getting 2 units? I was pretty good with a map and compass but haven't practiced in a while. Anything specific I should be looking for? Thanks for your help.

The only unit I know of that does both is the DeLorme PN-20. However, you have certain limitations withthis. If you want to route from street address A to B - then mostly you need to do this with thier software on your PC and upload it to the unit. Also, no voice for guidance, only a few beeps to signal direction change so you need to watch the unit - no where near as sophisticated as Garmin, Magellan or TomTom. On the other hand, loading up the topo maps for hiking is really good, and you can plot trails, get elevations and track your progress.
Generally, I find the Earthmate software a bitch to use - not very user friendly, but if you want an all in one unit - this is about all there is.

While I don't have a unit to do both, you might want to look at something like the Magellan Triton. I'm not usre how good the driving directions on it are. I do have 2 GPS units right now - a ForeRunner, and a TomTom in the car. Love them both!

you may want to look at two separate units - will likely cost less then one does it all GPS.
for hiking and trails - stick with Garmin
for more info, go to a local REI if you've got a store close by.
