Killer in Christian/Newsom Murders Gets Death

(AP) - A Tennessee man convicted of kidnapping, rape and
murder charges
in the fatal carjacking of a couple on a date has been sentenced to death.
The defendant, 28-year-old
Lemaricus Davidson,
showed no reaction Friday as jurors announced the
death sentences
for the murders of 21-year-old college student Channon Christian and her 23-year-old boyfriend,
Christopher Newsom.
Davidson was found guilty of abducting the couple in Knoxville during a 2007 carjacking by several armed men.
Both were raped, Newsom was fatally shot and Christian suffocated after she was choked and stuffed in a
garbage bag
and trash can.
Davidson's brother was convicted in the same attack in August and is serving life in prison without parole. Two other defendants from
Kentucky
are awaiting trial.
(This version CORRECTS lead to reflect that Davidson was convicted of kidnapping, rape and murder charges in the case, but was not convicted of raping the male victim.)
If there's ever a criminal deserving of the ultimate penalty, it's this fellow.

The movie's basically formulaic. "Man who was once a trained killer ("the best there ever was") suffers loss and avenges that loss against a fatally-flawed system yada-yada." It's still viscerally satisfying on a certain emotional level for many people. Believe me, if it were as easy to pull off the kinds of things this guy, in the trailer, is shown doing, it would've already been done. It's the same as watching some Rambo flick where he kills a battalion of North Vietnamese military folks with just his bow and some explosive-tipped arrows. It could NEVER happen in real life, as anybody who's been involved in direct action or in-the-field military operations can tell you ;-) But it's still fun to watch.

He certainly earned the death penalty, but, of course, years of appeals will follow. The system needs some adjustment. The high minded sympathy for murderers crowd [ACLU, Amnesty], will certainly object.
