Job Searching Tips Can't Post

Hey does anyone have any good job searching tips? I just graduated with my bachelor's deg. in chemistry last june and I have been sending my resume online to many companies. I usually call them a week after I send my resume with a little something like " Hi my name is Doug Herrick and I sent my resume online to your company. I was wondering if you had recieved it yet. I graduated this past june with a bachelor's in chemistry and I am looking for any entry-level positions available." If nobody answers from HRD I usually leave a message like that with my name and phone # and I always end with a "thank you for your time." Yet I have not recieved any feedback from companies except for one (EMAX laboratories). Anyone have any helpful tips? Thanks!

Network Network Network and when you think you're done Network some more. Dropping resumes into online HR databases is a pretty hopeless cause especially for new graduates and especially in this economy. You need to tell everyone you come in contact with - including random people you meet at the grocery store, standing in line at the movies, literally everyone that you are looking for a job in XYZ industry. Whenever anyone gives you a contact - that their brother's ex-wife's cousin works at said company you HAVE to followup with them. If you have a good relationship with your parents and other relatives ask them to ask their network if they have contacts in said industry and then followup on any leads you get.

Also talk to any professors you had good relationships with and access your college's network to see if anyone who ever graduated from your college/university is working in your industry and then contact them to see if they will talk to you for "information" (don't contact them saying that you're looking for a job). Most alums will always talk to other alums. Seriously followup on every single lead you get and talk to everyone you can.

Most people like to think that they can get a job "on their own" but the truth is that jobs are typically given out to people who have some sort of relationship with the company. Whether that's to a client of a recruiter who has a relationship with the company or to average Joe because his grocery bagger's sister-in-law works for the company and he was recommended through them.

Doug,

Congratulations on the grad.

Advice? As you're driving down your major interstates, look for the large companies along the highway. If you think they pertain to you, look them up on the web and send them your package. If you find a company you really like, and there's an opening, be relentless with your follow ups. The HR folks may or may not care, they just need to find a handfull of qualified folks, make sure you're on the top of the list.

Aim high. Sounds like an ad eh, but it's true. You can shoot a little high, couple your resume with your drive and personality to win the interview. Attitude makes a lot of difference. I had to lay off one guy from my group a few years back. All great workers, i picked the guy with the bad attitude.

Another thought. Look into military, or civilian gov contractors. Might be a good way to get some experience.

Take care and good luck.

Scott

What does your university offer in recruitment tools and assistance? Job fairs? If your school has a large co-op program, then they will probably be able to assist post-graduation..
