Is your best friend an "idiot'
Can't Post
I've been best buds with this guy since high school. We have a long close friend history together from wild crazy things we did in our younger days. We could fill volumes about our crazy youth misadventures. We're the original modern Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn. He was best man at my first marriage and i was best man at 2/3 of his. :-) The only reason I wasn't best man at #3 was because it was a quicky in Vegas. Believe it or not, that's been the most successful for him.
Time passed and our lives took different directions. Our career paths were different and now we live a long distance from each other. But he could call me up at any time and I'd stop anything for him. He could show up at my door without warning at 3:00 AM and he's always welcome. Vice versa. The women in our life just accept that.
Problem is he's an idiot about politics.:-) Very conservative and right of center. I'm liberal and to the left. If we get into political discussions it can end into nearly fisticuffs if a few drinks are involved, but we always bury the hatchet until next time. Where did he go wrong?
Kind of reminds me of some of the LR characters.:-)
I'll bet some of you guys have a guy in his life like this?
I'm sure B.K. does? :-)

My dad and his best friend have VERY different political and religious views (we are non-religious and he is a pastor!). They agreed many, many years ago (maybe even before I was born, so 28+ years?) just to not get into conversations about those two subjects. That seems to work.
I will save calling his best friend an idiot because he's super rad, other than the obvious ;)

Yeah man, but mine only used to be an idiot. He impresses me more and more every day. I used to say that if he were a woman I'd marry him. (Did I just admit that on a public forum?)

I am contacting Websters to let them know to chain the definition of idiot. At least you mentioned that if he were far to the left and that made him an idiot...oh wait you didnt. I'm sorry I was going to give you credit for being a non idiot but it seems you think that someone who doesnt beleive in your side of the argument is an idiot and not just someone with a different opinion.

That's right, people with kooky, stupid ideas aren't idiots, they just have 'different opinions', the pussification of america continues.

Did I miss the kooky part? I read the OP quickly but all I remembered reading was that he had different opinions.

Hmm, I would say that you are both idiots. How many busted marriages between the two of you?

My best friend is as far to the left as I am to the right (both pretty far to each side).
My situation is a little trickier than yours though as my best friend is also my wife!!!!
It would be in my best interest therefore to not answer the question you pose in the title of your thread :-)

Absolutely. He thinks I'm a total lost cause.
Nobody took the bait. The answer I wanted to hear from conservatives was "some of my best friends are liberals. :-)

Can't argue that one. I'm on #2 and he's on #3.

But that would require a sense of humour and based on posters like Rodred, you are clearly asking for a lot.

Hopefully you all know me well enough to know my general political ideology at this point...nothing too controversial.
Anyway I have very good friends who are new earth creationists to republicans to flaming liberals and libertarians. I also have immediate family from complete socialists living in France to others who run with some of the most conservative inner circles in DC. In order to get through the holidays with folks this diverse I have learned to survive with the following guidelines:
- Detach your emotion from the conversation (even after beers/wine)
- Acknowledge differences
- Don't exaggerate or play to stereotypes
- Do your research better than your opponent and stick to the facts
I have found if you stick to these guidelines then it will be easier to get your point across, increase your chance of 'winning' the debate/point, and leave the relationship with your opponent in a state that will be more likely to survive the test of time.

Most of my friends are Republicans and we do debate politics from time to time. We never settle things and most times we just agree to disagree...but all of them are dear friends.

Sometimes jobs force you to have a certain out look . Most hardcore industrial folks - Government or Law enforcement are republicans .With instigator Talk radio playing in the office ..They deal with the trash of society every day.
While others drink herbal tea and listen to NPR . Wondering why Obama cant print enough money to get the gardeners teeth fixed .
Being able to compromise with people's views in a civil manor , and tell them I don't agree .
When they get you mad they win ,,,,, don't stress out on things you cant change . The sun will raise and set ,,, your buddy is an idiot ,,,, life goes on .

I am surprised how a few of my friends are such wacky liberals. I'm starting to think one's political inclination may be genetic. I have found it's better to have a "don't ask; don't tell" political discussion policy with these friends because talking politics with them is so frustrating.

One of my good friends is a hardcore Quebecois separatist. Its painful to listen to and it makes my blood boil. He gets upset about all the anglos taking over Montreal (like me) and will no longer speak to me in english.
We've agreed to disagree, in french.

Never talk politics or religion with friends or family. It's not worth the end of friendships.
