Independence Day Can't Post

How many people, without going to look it up, know what Independence Day is?

Of course it would be :-)

It is more food for thought. Here we are with a day off work, BBQ'n and watching fireworks and I bet a lot of people don't know why :P

Ya know though.........You bring up a good point.

Some of our Patriotic Holidays have lost there original intention. Like Memorial Day. Since 9/11 it has become more about the living than the those lost to battle. Memorial Day is to honor our fallen, primarily soldiers but it has also come to honor anyone who has lost thier life in service to our country like many of the nurses in WWI and WWII. And of course of public servants in 9/11.

We have a day that almost goes completly un-noticed for those that have served and are serving. It's called Veterans Day.

Of course your speaking for yourself.......I happen to be at work.

I work in the engineering dept of a manufacturing plant. I'm overseeing several contractors. A down weekend is our opportunity for plant upgrades.

But there is still a 2hr bike, 1 hr run.....grill, food, family and beer in the picture.....I'm even going to squeeze in a sprint tri on sunday!

7/4/1776 was the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Re: Independence Day [Hid] [In reply to] Can't Post

I make a point of calling it Independence Day, rather than just "the 4th". I also explained to my almost 5 y/o daughter what it is. My wife has been doing a lot of reading on history as well- her initial citizenship appointment is tomorrow (maybe the interview?). There's nothing better than living on a military base on any patriotic holiday.

Do you think many Americans actually don't know what Independence Day is?? Seems rather unconceivable...

Kind of disappointing how they removed "our everlasting Adieu!" from the closing of the denunciation in an early draft. Nothing wrong with a little bravado when kicking off a revolution.

Re: Independence Day [Clutch Cargo] [In reply to] Can't Post

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever
