I loved REM, but can't say so in the present tense. That period from '86 to '90 when they were exploding (Life's Rich Pagent, Document, Green) was just fantastic.

I am one of those fans who dig the new stuff but in my heart the best stuff was Monster on back to Cronic Town. I will always be thier bitch.

It's great when a band can write and play something as beautiful as "Fall on Me" and then turn around and rock it with "Star 69". I have to admit I haven't heard any of their music after Monster but that and everything before it still gets played regularly in my home. I was able to see them in concert with Live opening up. Those two bands rocked.

Re: I just love REM. [Mr. Tibbs] [In reply to] Can't Post

I went to GT, but spent most of my college years skipping class and seeing bands in Athens, GA. We were at the 40 Watt Club several times when Michaels Stipe wandered on to stage. One night he sang "Telling White Lies": Jason (Jason & the Scorchers) then sang "Rockville."

We also found the windmill farm, which served as the back-drop for a lot of the early Murmer/ Chronic Town era videos/movies. We knocked on the door to see if we might wonder around a bit. The elderly woman answered the door and said, "Are you with that R.A.M. band?" We said, "No Mam, but we like them a lot." She said, "Do you know what? My husband had cardiacs and no insurance. Them R.A.M. boys said go ahead and just send us the bill. It was $25,000 and them boys paid it."

That was cool. So 25 years later, my guitar sits in the corner of our bedroom and I play Boxcars, Driver 8, Sitting Still, Life's Rich, So. Central Rain, and all the other greats from that time - still trying to copy Stipe's hypnotic voice.

In terms of the new stuff, I agree it's almost like two different bands. Like the early stuff, I found it takes a few listens to fully appreciate their various works.

PS I went to iTunes recently and bought a few singles off the "Athens Inside Out" record. I was laughing thinking that Guadalcanal Diary and Pylon just got a 35-cent royalty check bc I was the only one that month that bought one of their songs!

I saw them on that same tour in New Haven (actually about a week after the show in that video). Life's Rich Pageant was also my favorite album of theirs, enjoyed the early albums as well but started to drift away from them after Document.

I'm not a big REM fan but this thread made me dig out my old Monster CD yesterday. Star 69 and Tongue are just great songs.

I have REM set as a favorite on Sirius and it amazes me how many songs they have...not uncommon for multiple times a week a song comes on by them I have never heard.

I just love them, too.

Personally, I thought they had two incredible creative streaks: Murmur through Life's Rich Pageant and Out of Time through Hi-Fi. There's hardly a skippable song on all those albums.

Favorite? I dunno. There's a song on Fables that I like a lot...
