How do you perceive medical doctors? Can't Post

This is something I am curious about. I am currently interviewing at medical schools during the application cycle and am extremely excited by and committed to the medical pathway.

Something a lot of pre-meds focus on, intentionally or not, is the 'prestige' factor often associated with the medical degree. I've also seen a lot of recent backlash to torte reform, which I know to be direly needed to combat the costs incurred by defensive medicine, and to protect the sanity of our nation's physicians.

If you could take a moment to provide your honest opinion of physicians/surgeons in general, I would be appreciative. Think of it as a survey of sorts.

I don't think of them in general. I think of them as individuals. Some I like. Some I don't. Depends on their level of competency, and their personableness. I've yet to meet the doc with a god-complex.

Disclaimer: I'm a PhD educated evolutionary biologist.

I find physicians to be a mixed bag. Some I've had I could tell were not just knowledgeable in a clinical sense, but also with regard to the latest research findings. They were skeptics in the best sense.

Others I've met are damned near clueless. I got in an 'argument' with one of my physicians about the the medicine I was on. She was insisting something that was not consistent with either the physician or patient information provided on the medicine's website.

I have a couple of grad school buddies whose BFs/hubbies were in med school. They were shocked by the lack of science in the MD curriculum. I remember taking a stats class and one of the students was a dual MD/PhD student. He wanted to do research and sneered that the medical training was only training him to be a "clinician" and not to be a scientist.

Suffice it to say, I'm shocked that med school training does not seem to involve learning how to read and interpret scientific papers. And it scares the hell out of me that there are apparently a significant number of med students that do not believe in evolution. Hello MRSA!!!

Torte = a tasty bakery treat. Tort = a wrongful act potentially resulting in lawsuits and crying.

Still a very high prestige occupation. As for the people, pretty much like everyone else, some you like, some you don't. Usually brighter than the average bear, but not a requirement.

Good luck with the admission process!

In France admittance to medical school is only by exam-there are no inteviews. Therefore, FR tends to have some very intelligent ( great recall?) docs but lacking in compassion. In the US I find the MD's usually pretty caring bunch, intelligent, and honest. My husband is an MD so most of our friends are docs. The most interesting ones are those who had to choose between a music career and med school.

I did some course work at an Ivy League medical school. I was blown away by the caliber of the students-they all played musical instruments and all spoke another language fluently. They seemed to have developed both sides of their brains-AND they were the most compassionate young people I had ever met.

While the younger crop seem to have lost some of the high end life style . That blank preoccupied look the old timers had as you answer their questions . All the time wondering
if the Benz will be finished before 3 pm .

It take a special sort to deal with People issues . While my cousin almost lost it as an x-ray tech as all her " little patients " with cancer ,,,,were never seen again . She felt like the grim reaper as the big eyed kids would say " I'm not getting any better " .

The flip side , was the doctor who called two days after he promised the test results for my dad . Ahhhhh ,,, Mr. K you have stage 4 mesopilioma "sp" lung cancer figure 6 - 8 months , get your life in order . Schedule some chemo with my assistant , see yeah .

It's a job that requires a lot of reading and memorization, esp. in school, but I don't really have this idea that Drs are super brains or anything.

Just like in any profession, there are folks who are great at their job--insightful, capable of thinking outside the box, good with people, nice balance of compassion and practicality--and there are folks who are just run of the mill clock punchers. And there are a lot of folks who fall somewhere in between.

It's not rocket science--doctors have a specialized set of knowledge and tools, along with certain privileges. I see them when I need their services, just like I'd see a mechanic or an electrician.

don't give a shit about prestige myself.

but i do value intelligence

and doctors are *almost* all pretty smart so I enjoy talking to them.

like if I have to hang out with a random walmart shopper, or random doctor

i pick the doctor

Torte = a tasty bakery treat. Tort = a wrongful act potentially resulting in lawsuits and crying.

I would NEVER want to reform tortes. They are perfect the way they are. :)

I generally have fairly high regard for doctors given the fact that they have put in significant education and training to get where they are. I can respect that. Like any profession, there are good ones and bad ones, so it really depends on the individual.

They are just like the rest of us. Good, bad and indifferent.

Thanks. Of course, MdotD isn't the only one who seems to have this obsession with pies every time we start talking about medical care. MJuric also refers to "torte reform" from time to time. I've gently nudged him by commenting "Torte? Yummy!" but he never took the hint. :)

I still prefer to spell it O'bama too....especially if he gave us torte reform.

I think of them as pretty bright people in general, although they tend to be quite conservative with regard to their field, IMO. I know of some old-school doctors in this area who still regard triathlons and marathons as far beyond the reach of older patients. My own PCP, in contrast, is active (in his mid-fifties) in our track club as well as occasional triathlons. That, of course, is why he's my PCP.

Also, Matt, while we're on this discussion, "populous" is an adjective. You don't talk about the "populous" of a country; the word you're looking for is "populace." I've tried to nudge you with humor on that one too. :)

50% of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class.

Re: How do you perceive medical doctors? [MdotD] [In reply to] Can't Post

Once again, some bias here. I am a chem grad student. I respect what doctors do but am often disturbed at how little knowledge they have about the medications they describe. If I am going to put a chemical into my body, I want to know what it does, how it does it, and to see some of the studies that support all of this. Needless to say, I take very few drugs. I also have upset a number of doctors with these questions. Frankly, any response that starts with, "the drug rep says..." is going to enrage me.
In regards to surgeons, the few I have met have been some cocky sons of bitches. I am not sure I would want it any other way. Yes, their arrogance and associated lack of people skills can be irritating but if I am going to trust somebody to cut me open I want them to be confident.

Re: How do you perceive medical doctors? [MdotD] [In reply to] Can't Post

My uncle was a medical doctor and had some of the worst personal health habits you can imagine. But that was just him.

Some are just pill pushers but others definately aren't. I really like my family physician.

As a chiropractor I've dealt with many MD's professionally and have definately found them to be a mixed bag. I've even had some as chiro patients but known others that seem to think I'm some sort of demon just because I'm a chiropractor. They're all over the map.
