Goodbye Mike Huckabee, we hardly knew ya...
Looks like Huckabee will be toast. I disagreed with most of his positions, but sorta liked the guy.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...uckabee_n_75362.html

Apparently Huckabee was instrumental in getting a convicted rapist released from prison, whose imprisonment was a cause celebre amongst conservative activists because his victim as a distant relative of Bill Clinton. After his release, he went on to rape and murder two women in Missouri. Well at least he left Arkansas. He died in prison.

And just when his poll numbers were starting to get interesting.

I'd have thought that the whole "ok, i don't know much, but i'm a good guy and believe in Jesus" act wouldn't work anymore. doesn't seem to be the case.

I saw this on ABC last night. This could happen to any governor, really (Not that that will give the media pause) ... I hope to be too busy to watch much news tonight but I gotta ask: How much play will this get on CNN v. Fox? If it was a Dem gov. running for president, how differently would they play it? Good question to ask I think ...

I don't think anyone has accused him of a lack of intelligence. He graduated magna cum laude with his bachelor's degree in 2 1/2 years.

His faith discussions, while strong, are more around forgiveness and mercy, rather than being angry at others. Clearly not an appeal to the existing religious right, but more in line with my own beliefs. He's not the fire and brimstone type that you might expect.

What scares me most about Huckabee is that 2 days after the NIE Iran report was published and the whole damn country seems to be talking about it, Huckabee was asked for his opinion on CNN and he said "what NIE report?"

I've had enough of Presidents who spend more time reading the Bible than the newspaper.

He graduated magna cum laude from Ouachita Baptist University. This is their list of notable alumni. I'm sure he's not an unintelligent man, but lets get real here. Its not like he was top of his class at Stanford, he went to a Christian beauty school.

Notable alumni

This is very different than Dukakis - Dukakis commuted a guy because he thought he was rehabilitated, which is a basic mission of the system. Horton was not a cause celebre or touted as a victim of injustice.

Huckabee commuted a sentence of a guy who was being pushed by the right because they argued that he was railroaded in the first place because his victim was related to Clinton. And apparently Huckabee agreed, despite a bunch of letters from victims talking about how violent and dangerous he was. And apparently Huckabee and the activists were wrong in their Clinton-hating fury.

Honest question: How does that compare to Bush's beliefs.

Bush ran on the "compasionate conservative" campaign and, IMHO, he's been just about the most aggressive president in my life time.

I may be wrong about this, but I read a pretty detailed article about Huckabee and this case a few months ago. I was under the impression that Huck's intervention in the case had very little or nothing to do with the victim being a distant Clinton relative and a lot to do with the vigilante punishment that was delivered to him prior to his incarceration.

What vigilante punishment?

the guy chopped his own nuts off didn't he?

I thought he was castrated by friends or family of the victim. I fully admit I may have the facts wrong; I casually read the article some months ago and I've never been a supporter of Huck. I've been paying far more attention to Richardson and Guiliani.

Yet another reason to be worried. It's one thing to have a graduate of such a school in office, but where will his appointees come from. Shall we get more lawyers from Pat Robertson's school of law?

Nobody has ever been charged with that alleged attack and the local police didn't spend much time investigating it after medical evidence showed that he most likely did it to himself.

Talk about being topical - I just saw this on the CNN homepage as we were discussing the story here. Interesting backround:

The local sheriff kept his nuts in a jar? Remind me not to rob a bank in that town!

I don't see how this is the big deal you make it out to be. He released a prisoner with time served that he thought might have been railroaded and possibly mistreated. This is exactly what the pardon power is for. Unfortunately, in this case, he made a poor choice. That is going to happen when people actually make decisions. Hopefully he will admit the poor choice and pledge to move on with a lesson learned.
This is not really comparable to Dukakis and Willie Horton. In that case Dukakis pushed through a whole program of releasing convicted killers on leave. That case showed terrible judgment and poor policy making.

More important might be reports that he used his clemency powers a lot. If this case is just one of many problems caused by that policy, then you do get to a Dukakis type problem.

Even more to your point, he didn't issue a pardon. His involvement was limited to writing a letter of support to the parole commitee, and they issued the pardon. Semantics, maybe, but it is factually wrong to say that Governor Huckabee released him from prison.

I am defending a Republican by saying he made a bad decision and needs to own up to it?

Tough crowd.

I guess this is why the top Democrats are devoid of anyone who has had any sort of Executive responsibility. They have never had to make a decision, so no need to fess up to a bad one.

There are two governors and a big city mayor on top of the nomination battle in the Republican side for a reason. The two senators are in the back of the pack for a reason.
